Gametrailers.com has recently posted its new GT Countdown, this time on "straight up" villains.

"Some villains are misunderstood; these are not. We may love to hate them, but we still hate them a lot."

10.
Lavos (Chrono Trigger)
09.
Bowser (Super Mario)
08.
Sephiroth (Final Fantasy)
07.
Albert Wesker (Resident Evil)
06.
Psycho Mantis (Metal Gear Solid)
05.
Xehanort (Kingdom Hearts)
04.
The Lich King (World of Warcraft)
03.
Liquid Snake (Metal Gear Solid)
02.
Kefka (Final Fantasy)
01.
Ganon (Legend of Zelda)

Any thoughts on the choices?

Where is Gary Motherfucking Oak?

Because he's not bad. Just misunderstood.

I usually don't agree at all with GT's countdowns, but this one is quite good.

Could be argued that Bowser isn't straight up villain though. I mean, he talks a big game, but at the end of the day, he's cool with just chilling and playing some tennis or kart racing with his buddy Mario.

Ganon, really? Kefka is awesome though.

I swear people never actually played FF6. Kefka is such a terrible one dimensional shallow villain. Dude is straight out of a crappy saturday morning cartoon. Ever other word out of his mouth is seriously just "Kill them! Get them! Destroy Them!" and laughing. He's so cliche it hurts. Maybe when you're 12 years old you think that makes him a good villain but we're freakin adults now. Completely impossible to take that character seriously. "Fooey there is sand in my boots!" ~ Kefka 1994. He is a joke.

Ganon? Bowser??? They're practically heroes now.

And no Luca Blight? :/

What? Bowser's sports tour adventures are one thing, but ganon? the closest thing he's ever been given to a not-unilaterally-evil motive is the wind waker monologue, and even then that's still basically "my jealousy of people with better lives than me inspired me to apocalyptic levels of vengeance," which isn't actually redeeming in any way.

Missing one of my all-time favourites.

Handsome Jack.
Say what you want about the overall story of Borderlands 2, but Handsome Jack took the total cake of great antagonist. Funny, in your face, devious and smart. I loved this guy.

There's a reason he is referred to as The Mad Clown. It shows what can happen when someone as unhinged as he has access to unlimited power. He rode the Emperor's coattails until he could steal the spotlight for himself and literally use the world as his plaything.

Ganon has been given sympathetic backstory enough times that he's moved out of the evil entity category into some sort of possible anti-hero limbo. When I think of him now I don't immediately think "pure evil".

Opinions, how do they work?

Kefka is just a lame and weak version Albedo.

*ducks*.

i am literally drawing a complete blank on any examples of this sort. i guess it is time for me to get lost in a zelda wiki of some kind for a few minutes.

It's not really spelled out in a lot of the games themselves too strongly besides Wind Waker, but there's enough evidence to suggest that he was once someone who primarily sought to save his people from a life of suffering, but was corrupted by the Triforce of Power.

I'm probably overselling it a bit, since a lot of it is via deduction, but when I see Ganondorf, I don't immediately think he's some twisted villain the exists purely for evil, at least not always.

04... really?

Like I fucking LOVE Arthas but I think Sargeras would have been a far better choice

I haven't played any of the Warcraft RTS's, but Sargeras shouldn't be anywhere near this list. Yes he's the strongest villan in WoW, but he still hasn't really done shit, just his followers. Maybe whenever he himself has a significant role in an expansion he can be on this list.

No Metal Face (Xenoblade Chronicles) is laughable.

There are so many better villains in gaming than the ones listed, they are just not as popular. The list should be "Top 10 Most Popular Villains".

It's GT's Top 10 of their personal experiences and preferences and views.

Metal Face may have been on there if we could convince Ben to stop playing Hearthstone and finally play Xenoblade.

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own
I always loved that ganondorf basically grew up and was trained by a race entirely of women.

Does anybody else get chills when you finally get to ganondorf in twilight princess, just the way he sits on the throne with his head resting on his hand and then he stands up like sucha badass mofo

Ganon was literally reincarnated out of pure hatred from THE demon of the zelda series.
