CultOfMac:Why the new Apple TV will kill your Xbox or Playstation(hint:Motion ctrl)

A media set-top box could certainly become disruptive to console gaming if it ever took off.

Not placing any bets on an Apple TV doing that, though....

I will probably get this bc Apple TV is a good service, but the idea it will replace a PS4 or XB1 is laughable. At least I could place The Room 2 on my TV while waiting for a big download.

However, for people who don't have a current gen system and are casual players, this has a ton of potential as a sales driver.

Hyperbole aside.

Serious question.

Is an Apple TV with a controller that can be used for games AND an App Store a threat for traditional game consoles?? I mean you've already got millions & millions of people who already have an Apple ID.

Apple managed to sell nearly 4 million Apple Watches in 3 months and you can ONLY use an Apple Watch if you have an iPhone 5 series or iPhone 6 series phone.

the best thing is that the iphone, through its app store, is doing a hell of a job on console gaming already, so this whole fantasy that the apple tv box will amount to much of a threat is a little pointless.

Im struggling to understand how a box that retreads old ground and is lacking in a library that would be appealing to people who would want to game on the big screen is supposed to kill consoles that keep pushing forward in terms of tech. This article would have been 100% on point had they done this during the time Nintendo was on top of the world in terms of sales, It would have had all the strengths of Nintendo's machine and none of its weaknesses.

this is the problem.

but most of these people buy apple products not because they value the tech behind it but they simply love it because its from apple.(so the cool kid from the block-phenomena).

most people do give a shit what the watch does. its apple.
i think apple is a bit late to release a waggle-system now. they are more than 5 years too late.
not interested, except if there are exclusive awesome apple tv only games. and those do not exist.

It sounds like the new Apple TV is shaping up to be a killer gaming console. Can it take over console gaming the same way the iPhone and iPad dominated mobile gaming? Only time will tell

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Yet again Apple release something every other company has done and moved on with and people go crazy.
My bother in-law was telling me the next iPhone will shoot 4k video and was amazed by it.
I didn't have the heart to tell him that my 2 year old phone already does that as well as contactless payments.ie Apple Pay.

I find it hard to say. I mean just how many players of ios games actually want to play games on a tv? Its the same question to be asked of the nvidia shieldtv. Though Apple of course will do much better there in getting devs and users than nvidia will do.

I imagine the percentage will be low, especially it would need all new games as controls will be very different to current ios schemes whether you use a motion remote or a traditional controller. That said I'd kind of like it to be a success simply to shake up the tv gaming market a little as Apple did the handheld market. I do like the idea of micro consoles for a certain level of games.

That said I'm pretty sure I'll buy one but thats for non gaming reasons.

I do wonder about the power of even a A8X based device. Is that even Wii level?

It already has more than doubled Dreamcast sales. From Wikipedia:

I was kinda joking, but holy shit is Apple TV selling horribly, there is no "big market" for that thing, it will sell to the niche Apple loyalists, but it will never reach mainstream sales like the PS4 or Wii.

Most people don't care. Folks act like most apple users are ignorant of technology (not saying you are specifically). While there are many "less than savvy" Apple consumers, most of know which alternatives are on the market. I've tried I don't know how many alternatives to my iPhone each year or so and I always stick with my iPhone, I don't care if X company has already implemented X feature, because it doesn't apply to my phone and I'm not satisfied with other phones.

In regards to the original topic, I don't see this thing posing any significant threat.

Apple TV has never took off anywhere close to the degree of it's other products.

Being able to play iOS games won't change that.

It is not a threat to console gaming.

Mobile gaming as a whole is a threat to console gaming and the rise of mobile gaming from 2009-present has been a phase where mobile gaming has been in tremendous growth and is expected to overtake revenue generated from console gaming this year or next on a global basis. In North America it's slightly different right now where mobile is massive but console still generates more revenue and will do for the next couple of years at least but mobile is rapidly catching up.

Mobile gaming has been made popular by the dual Android and iOS operating systems as they now have access to pretty much the same games library and a myriad of different genres and business models, the most popular of which being free to play. The convenience of mobile gaming has allowed it to become the new mainstream in gaming which console was around a decade ago.

That being said, mobile is already big enough without the need for an Apple TV for gaming. A new Apple TV would not threaten the traditional console market (in the West at least) because it would not appeal to traditional console gamers. It would not really appeal to the mainstream much as well as it's marketed as a digital entertainment system that plays games. This product would mainly draw in appeal from those after a Smart TV like experience where they can stream their favourite content on their TV. There is plenty of competition in that area already and whilst playing games is also a plus it's not something the average consumer will consider when they can just play the same games on their phone.

Apple TV would need to actually enter the traditional console market to be a threat to that market and it would need to have its own exclusive non mobile games as well as third party support similar to PS4/Xbox One.

Apple TV is not a threat really and the first edition hasn't exactly done well which shows it's a niche product in the first place. But it's not going to move gamers who play traditional console games over to Apple TV exclusively. There is a market for traditional console games and whilst that number maybe smaller than a decade ago they are showing support for their hobby and ARPU is now higher than ever before.

At the end of the day mobile gaming is growing massively, but traditional console gaming has also turned around a bit, the market has already contracted there and now there is opportunity for more growth and stabilisation. PS4 and Xbox One sales are expected to return the traditional console industry to growth in 2015 and beyond.

Ultimately if someone buys an Apple TV it's not because they wanted to buy a gaming console. That may be a small part of it, but not the main reason and not a threat.

Unless EA, Ubisoft, Take-Two, Bethesda, etc etc backs it hardcore with all upcoming games that ps4 and xbox get, plus something big that would actually make it unique from the game consoles of today. No.

The above is incredibly unlikely to happen, thus an apple games console will never be a threat. The people interested would be the same people who already don't buy game consoles because they are happy with mobile.

"Cult of Company Name" believes Company Name will take over the world.

Yeah, right.

Also, new Apple TV won't kill anything. We're still waiting on that Amazon Fire TV to do any killing.

Amazon needs to start releasing some of their own games on it to do that.

I absolutely can't stand the minimalist remote of our Apple Tv. neither can my wife, or extended family. It's too simplified.

likewise, the very idea of using motion controls to play Pac Man hurts my head.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
Ignoring the article's hyperbole for a moment: who is this console for? It costs about as much as a ps3 does nowadays, and it has a smaller library and can do less things. It's not a budget console like the OUYA, and its tech is not on par with the latest stuff.

These articles from heavily biased sources seem to completely misunderstand who and what drives console gamers and gaming. Apple TV indeed could be a huge success, but for console gamers, it will be supplementary to a more powerful console.

At least in the United States anyway, the future of mobile gaming may not be as clear anymore.

There was a recent report from Flurry, Yahoo's mobile analytics company, that found U.S. average daily mobile game time drops over 30% in a year: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/..._mobile_game_time_drops_over_30_in_a_year.php

We'll have to wait and see if more reports like this surface in the future but this is the first time I've seen a report that claims that mobile gaming time has stopped growing and in fact has actually decreased compared with time spent in other mobile applications.

That report doesn't say much other than people are spending less time on games on mobile.

Whilst that maybe true it doesn't mean anything for the direction the mobile gaming industry is moving in and right now it's set to overtake console this year when it comes to revenue generation.

The mobile gaming market is so big that it's able to generate all the revenue without the need for $60 games and the like, it can give them away for free and entice users with in app purchases.

That's not to say mobile gaming is the healthiest industry in the world as right now it's hard to get a #1 hit on the app store, but there is still plenty of opportunity there. Even in North America.

Wait ... I thought consoles were already dying?

In that case, shouldn't an Apple TV mercy killing be called Euthanasia?

;)

Man, I thought these Apple bots would stop with this bullshit after their iPhone, iPod, and iPad had failed to kill gaming consoles. But nope, we've got another one of those dolts.

A hyperbole article, obviously, but I have wondered why none of the big companies have pushed for a Wii-mote like remote for their TVs yet or add the pointing function on the iPhone app already.

Just about everyone plays mobile. This hasn't and continues to not affect the core gaming market population outside of the Wii/DS craze.

Gaming, on the TV? Who does THAT anymore? ;)

Joking aside, Apple is way too smart for a product so dumb. I mean, could there be an Apple TV with more gaming options as a sidebar feature? Sure but it isn't going to be any sort of a focus.

Their aim wasn't to kill gaming consoles. Their aim was to kill other phones, music players and netbooks - which they kind of did.
