September 9th is fast approaching, and it will mark the 20th Anniversary of Sony's entrance into the U.S. gaming market with the release of the Playstation. Often referred to as the PS1 or PSX, Sony's first foray into the console market changed the landscape of gaming in ways that continue to impact the medium to this very day. Along the way, we've seen numerous consoles, handhelds, third- and first-party exclusive games, and a variety of peripherals that all came together to bolster the Playstation brand as a household name in gaming. And throughout it all those of us who've been part of the Playstation ecosystem have surely formed dozens of memories that we look back on fondly.

Whether it be nostalgic recollections of late nights with friends or family, midnight console launches, or groundbreaking games that would serve as the spark for an interest in a new genre or franchise, I'm interested in reliving this 20-year ride with you all in the form of personal anecdotes and discussion of how the brand has evolved and changed with the times. This is not a place for bashing other players in the industry. It's just an excuse to indulge in a little communal nostalgia to commemorate this anniversary.

I'll start with a quick bulleted list to get the ball rolling, and then I'll follow up later with more detailed musings and remembrances. Here are some highlight moments from Playstation's 20-year history that stick out for me:

PS1/PSX Era

  • Playing Twisted Metal four-player with some friends in 1997 and realizing that I simply had to have a PS1.
  • Getting a Playstation along with Loaded for Christmas 1997. I was taken by the grungy, gory vibe of Loaded and felt like it was a distinct deviation from what I had been playing on Nintendo and Sega systems up to that point.
  • Playing Resident Evil 2 as my first foray into survival horror and learning that games were capable of eliciting real fear.
  • Buying Final Fantasy 7 on a whim and being introduced to the world of Squaresoft RPG's.
  • Signing up for Playstation Underground and eagerly awaiting new demo discs every month in the mail. I still have all of my old PU discs.
  • Playing Destruction Derby for the first time and being impressed with how much polygonal graphics could impact game design
  • Being introduced to Metal Gear Solid by a friend who brought over the demo disc. Once I saw him play the intro to the full game, I had to have it. I got it along with the Versus Books strategy guide later that Christmas, and it would go on to become one of my absolute all-time favorite games ever made. This opened my eyes to cinematic presentation in games and affected my tastes greatly.
  • Living through Square's golden age. It seemed like one masterpiece after another was coming from them every few months for a good 3-5 years. What a time to be alive.

PS2 Era

  • My dad surprising me with a PS2 for Christmas in the year 2000. They were so hard to come by, and I had resigned myself to the likelihood that I've had to wait until Spring 2001 for them to come back in stock. My dad had called around dozens of stores every day for months leading up to the holiday, and he managed to reserve and snag a lone system that came in right before Christmas. Getting that PS2 along with Tekken Tag Tournament stands out as one of my favorite Christmas memories ever.
  • Enjoying the god-tier, unmatched, expansive library of the PS2 for the better part of a decade. The PS2 served me well throughout almost all of high school and all of college. There are so many amazing games and memories attached to this system that I think I'll be able to better do them justice in a more longform post later in the thread.
  • Playing ICO for the first time and being blown away. I can safely say that this game opened my eyes to all sorts of games that I previously probably never would have tried. It expanded my horizons, and it's one of my favorite games ever.
  • Eagerly awaiting the release of Shadow of the Colossus and then spending days and nights playing through it in college. This is probably my most replayed game ever, and I can confidently call it my favorite game of all time.
  • Playing GTA3 for the first time and feeling like I was witnessing a Mario 64 moment. The flagpole moved for console gaming with GTA3 dropped, and anyone who was there to experience it would agree.
  • Giving Jak & Daxter a try despite being initially uninterested and being impressed with the seamless, huge platforming environments with no load times and great animation.
  • Checking online every day for months leading up to the release of Vice City, reading rumors about helicopers and motorcyles. The rumor mill was in full effect for Vice City with some stuff that didn't end up in the game, but once it dropped I was floored by all of the new features and the 80's vibe. My favorite GTA game to this day.
  • Being so excited for MGS2's release that I could barely sleep. Kojima did a great job building hype for MGS2 with those incredible trailers at every trade show.
  • Many late nights in college spent playing Burnout 3's Takedown mode with roommates.

PS3/PSP Era

  • Going to the midnight launch of MGS4 to pick up my MGS4 PS3 bundle.
  • Playing GTA4 and noticing that pedestrians were running for cover from the rain and shielding their heads with newspapers and umbrellas. That was when I first felt like the "next gen" had arrived.
  • Playing Uncharted 2 after having only mildly enjoyed the first game and having to pick my jaw up off the floor several times throughout the course of the game. The helicopter fight with the collapsing building and the train mission stand out clear as day in my mind's eye.
  • Playing the best-executed western game ever made: Red Dead Redemption. I was so taken with it by the time the credits rolled that I made the soundtrack a permanent fixture in my car stereo.
  • Picking up the Ico/SotC HD Collection. I still can't believe this got a release. I was overjoyed.
  • The Last of Us serving as the PS3's swan song. After UC2 and this, anything Druckmann directs is going to be a day-one purchase for me.

PS4/Vita Era

  • Seeing the crowd go nuts when Sony announced that they'd be supporting physical media, used games, and offline playability with the PS4. Also when they dropped the 8GB GDDR5 RAM bomb. They really got off to a good start capturing the goodwill of the players with the launch of the PS4.
  • Playing Bloodborne late into the night with my brother and a few friends in an online party.
  • Playing Grim Fandango Remastered after years of wanting to play it, and being just as taken with it as everyone else.
  • Buying a Vita a few years into its lifecycle and being floored by the number of great games available for the system in the form of indies and PS1 Classics. It's the best way to play PS1 games on PSN, IMO.

PS1: Always was a Nintendo fanboy (except for a Genesis I had) until I went to a friends house and they had a PS1, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, and MK Trilogy. Never even heard of PS1 before so it was mind blowing to me. Amazing system, we didn't have memory cards though which sucked.

PS2: Still was a big fanboy, got the gamecube which was great but always wanted PS2 for FFX and Kingdom Hearts. Finally got one... so good best system.

PSP: First game I played was Metal Gear AC!D, weird game.

PS3: What a joke of a launch lol. Ignored this system until Little Big Planet came out, got one with Infamous and it and it turned out to be easily the best system of that gen

Vita: fun system but didn't take off due to stupid memory cards. Still a much better piece of tech in every way than the 3DS, wish it was the top instead of that crud.

PS4: Bought at launch, back on top baby.

Smells like fresh rosebuds
I remember getting it at launch with Toshinden and loving it. I also remember it as the era of the demo. Like I played hundreds of demos from mags, in store giveaways, packins, etc.

Getting the PS1 and Crash Bandicoot. It started my love of games. The fucking PS2, nothing needs to be said. My faith faltered with the PS3 but when I saw Uncharted 2 I just had to get it. Luckily they had come out with that slimmer version. I was an early PS4 adopter and there wasn't as much for a bit but goddamn Bloodborne! Can't wait for more memories and many more years to come for Sony!

Man I don't know what did it but seeing your bullet list of PS1 highlights just threw me into a deep, deep nostalgia. It was a really great era of games and it felt so exciting and new. The internet was growing rapidly at the same time and technology was just so wild and fresh and promising. It's not much different now really, but we're just used to it and all grown up.

Thanks for taking the time, this is a great collection of memories here.

I didn't care for the PS1 at first because I bought the saturn a few months before and i thought it had a better lineup for games. I think we ended up getting it for Christmas that year anyways. I was such a sega fan boy back then lol

My personal highlight would be my sister netting me both Akuma and Dan. I was unfamiliar with gaming mags back then so I had no idea how to unlock them.

She used the random box and, after several attempts, she got me Akuma and then at a later date, Dan. It was uncanny.

Edit: I should mention that SFAlpha was my first and only PS1 game back then.

PSX: Twisted Metal 2, tony hawk pro skater 1 and 2. Last but certainly not least, getting FF7 on launch day.

Final Fantasy 7. There are very, very few games that I remember exactly where I was when I first played them. Everything surrounding that first play of FF7, and I mean the literal first power on of it, is cemented heavily in my memory.

I remember my ps2 breaking down and I bought a ps1 till Christmas time as a kid to pass the time till Christmas to get one of the new ps2 slims. It was at that point t I was introduced to legend of dragoon, tactics ogre and all the final fantasy's. Was amazing how good PSone games were and really opened my eyes to tons of JRPGs

The first console I saved like crazy for and bought on launch. Got it from HMV in Manchester with my dad with Wipeout. I was 13

The pictures in mags of Ridge Racer and Wipeout saved me from stopping saving halfway and getting a 32x. Bless you Sony. Incredible library and probably still my fondest remembered gaming time since starting in 1988 ish with a ZX spectrum

I actually remember each of the days I got each of my Sony consoles. I was only 5 when I got my PS1 but I'll never forget that day. Every Toys R Us trip I thought I'd only play Crash Bandicoot at the store. That was the routine. Then one day my Dad decided to get me it and I didn't even understand, I didn't even ask for one but my Dad obviously saw my passion for it.

The rest is history, a lifelong obsession. Culminating in a beautiful 20th Anniversary PS4 :).

I remember getting it in 96 and not being able to play it for a couple days because it came with RCA cables and all the TVs we had were RF only.

And we didn't get a memory card for like a year because the concept was so foreign at the time. I Remember playing Crash Bandicoot like it was Mario or something playing from the beginning every time. I mangaed to beat it at one point in one go eventually

Here's a video to get the nostalgic juices flowing. It's pretty cool to hear from the people responsible for the successful launch of the PS1. They really nailed the marketing of the gaming lifestyle that they envisioned for the PlayStation brand.

https://youtu.be/PHGr8iZY1bs

I got home with a few friends, turned on the Playstation for the first time and tried the demo disc. Parappa the Rapper started playing. It was freaking amazing.

PS1 N/A imma youngun. We had one but dont remember much of it

PS2: Holy shit favourite gaming system ever.
Starting Kingdom hearts over again because i got stuck in hollow bastion and had just as much fun

PSP: didnt play much outside pes06 and Vice City but damn were those 2 games amazing. Especially pro6. Playing videos on it blew my mind tho.

PS3:didnt buy one till there was a kz2 and infamous bundle p
lus my 360 rrod'd so perfect timing
. Soo good. Especially KZ2. Then went on to spend hundreds of hours in Little big planet. Expanding my tastes and shit. Demons Souls btw. Just had to mention that.

Vita: probably my favourite handheld. Introduced me to 2 of my favourite series. Persona and danganronpa. Persona 4 golden going on to be one of my Fav GOAT.

PS4-Bloodborne & the return of console JRPGs is all i recognise with this so far and thats enough for me to say the king has returned and may its reign be long and bountiful

For the first PlayStation:

I was in eighth grade when I got one and it had already been out for a little over a year. I previously played the system at my uncle's but I never got too hooked. But while I was in eighth grade, I noticed the first Resident Evil at a rental store and it looked great. Back then zombies weren't everywhere so I would get excited any time I saw something that featured them. Anyway, I rented the system along with the game on a weekend and fell in love with it. When I went back to school, I got into a discussion with another kid who also played it. We'd been acquaintances since first grade but never anything beyond that. Once we got to talking about Resident Evil every day at school for awhile we became best friends eventually. I remember in a shop class how I never did any of the work and instead wrote down ideas for a sequel. He contributed and we ended up sending off the ideas to Capcom, thinking they would actually listen to us, lol. But they were nice enough to send us back a post card thanking us for being fans. We stayed obsessed with Resident Evil up until Code: Veronica and after that we slowly lost interest in the series. Still, I'll always remember the first game mostly for how it brought us together and he's still my best friend today.

Back when the PS1 was released in America I was working my first job at Wendy's. After my second paycheck I went out and bought a PS1 and Wild Arms. My boss called my home asking me if I was coming in to work that day. Told him I wouldn't and that I quit. Spent the rest of the day playing Wild Arms. It was glorious.

PS1:
I remember being really young and my parents telling me they donated our NES to a poor family. I was too young to really understand why they would do such a thing, but my anger soon went away on Christmas when I unwrapped a new PS1 with Crash Bandicoot 2 and NASCAR '98 (my dad bought that one for himself but it was still awesome lol). Been a PS fan ever since.

PS2:
I was exteemy excited for the PS2, but there was no way I was getting one at Christmas due to all the shortages. So I got by with renting one occasionally until I had saved enough money to buy one. Still perhaps the greatest console of all time.

PS3:
I was in my junior year of high school when it came out but it was so expensive that it would have taken me probably half a year to save for one. My mom on Christmas 2005 surprised my sister and I by buying her a Canon Rebel STi and me a 60 gb PS3. Man it was awesome. But I think my friends and I had more fun playing Bully on it than any of the launch games. :p

PS4:
Now I'm a grown-ass man, so bought the PS4 day one with my own money. I've been PC gaming for a long time by now but Killzone still looked incredible compared to just about anything I had played on PC up to that point.

PS2
-Playing the PS2 for the first time and getting addicted to Smackdown vs Raw 2006
-Playing MLB The Show 07 with my dad and him always beating me

PS3
-Going over my friends house in 2008, never seeing the graphics that were possible on a PS3, and playing Nazi Zombies on Call of Duty: World at War and going nuts over the graphics for the whole game. Going over every day and playing Zombies for about 6 months, then I got my own PS3 and got MW2 and LittleBigPlanet around Christmas of 2009
-Pulling an all nighter making a franchise on MLB 10 The Show with my friends. We made every player on our real life baseball team on MLB 10

PS4
-Playing Knack and introducing Knack to my brother and multiple friends. I love Knack, it's pretty damn underrated. All of my friends enjoyed the hell out of it, which in turn shocked the hell out me
-Playing The Last of Us on PS4. Beat it in pretty a day. Instantly became my favorite game of all time.
-Beating Bloodborne. The best game from this generation, and I've played a lot of them. The game was so amazing.
-Playing The Witcher 3 on Death March. I'm almost done with The Witcher 3, but it's been over a month since I started it. The game is so damn hard on Death March but I'm now so familiar and comfortable with almost every mechanic in the game and now I'm doing a shit ton of side quests to keep the game going instead of finishing it because I love it.

I just miss Socom man :(. Give me a Socom 2 remaster and I swear I'll be a happy human being for the rest of my days. Socom 2 online is what defined my playstation experience.

Playstation? Never had one, but I played a lot of Spyro and Twisted Metal at my friend's house.

The Playstation Portable blew me away enough I preordered one from Japan when it came out and played Ridge Racer with no memory card for months. That was a great memory because I'd turn heads everywhere I went since I had it months before US release so most people hadn't even heard of it.

My first real dip into the PS family was with the PS3 early in its life, and I quickly jumped out with hour plus installs on games and the inability to watch a bluray I just bought without connecting online for a two hour update. Later I played my roommates and bought him Journey even to experience that, thanks to GAF.

Now my primary console is a PS4, one of many converts from the Xbox 360 after the Xbox One release announcement of sports, tv, sports, tv. Currently I'm playing Splatoon in front of me and I can't wait to afford an Xbox for Gears UE, but PS4 - thanks to its interface, updated controller, power, price, deals, PS Plus, Sony's "gamers first" attitude and more - has quickly become my favorite console I've owned.

I look forward to see what the next 20 years holds for Sony and its Playstation brand. :)

  • Living in the mountains, waiting for my preorder from the shop (where I also worked) to arrive
  • MK3 FIRST ON PLAYSTATION
  • Watching the Warhawk demo playing on a loop and thinking next gen has arrived
  • Being blown away by WipeOut a few months later
  • Being pissed that EA didn't get Madden/NHL out the first year
  • Being pissed the next year when they did and they sucked
  • Finally getting a proper hockey game with NHL 98

My favorite memory was getting a PS1 a few days before it launched (a week or so) because my aunt worked for marketing at either Acura or Subaru. It was one of the two because she switched around that time. It had something to do with sony sponsoring a race at the time around the launch.

To be honest i barely knew what it was because of how much i had written anything off that wasn't Sega or Nintendo at the time. There were so many consoles coming out in the 90's that it was easy to get lost in my head with all the other garbage CD based systems and even cartridge based systems. I just remember the Wipeout demo making my stomach drop when you went down a steep hill. It really was an insane console at the launch, and for the next few years, it made video games cool some how. They were toys before the Playstation.

Being about 13 years old and selling my genesis (with about 30 games including the phantasy stars, shining forces etc god that still hurts...) and scraping together money for months to have enough for a play station JUST to get the newly released FF7. My parents paid for the game, memory card and tax which was super nice of them.

Getting home. That Intro cut scene. Good god. It was so amazing.

or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Realize This Assgrab is Delicious
The first time I saw the PS1, it was not love at first sight.

I had already seen the Phillips CD-I and the Panasonic 3DO. These horrid non-gaming electronics companies making CD-ROM multimedia consoles did not work. Even as a kid I was jaded to them. I played Ridge Racer at a Costco and I wasn't that impressed with the warping textures and jaggies. Yawn, I'll wait for Nintendo Ultra 64.

But a little into the run of PS1, I got the memo. Final Fantasy IV (the last one was III, right?) was coming to PlayStation. And so was Castlevania, Street Fighter, Megaman.. That changed everything. I had gotten the message that PS1 was going to be the real successor to NES and SNES. I had to have one.

I made a Geocities website for Final Fantasy VII (what happened to IV-VI? Lol) in summer 1997. September 4, 1997, I got my copy of VII 3 days early, along with my PS1 and a memory card. The love affair began. I was there at ground zero of what would become one of the most cherished moments in gaming fandom.

The next months and years would be a gauntlet of awesome. SotN, Parappa, Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine and it's glorious demo discs, Final Fantasy Tactics, Resident Evil 2, Cool Boarders 2, Xenogears, Parasite Eve, Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, Megaman Legends, Final Fantasy VIII, Vagrant Story, Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy IX.

^ That's how it went down in those days, and no regrets. Of course I filled in a lot of gaps in my gaming over the 15 years since, but I think I had a damn good run.

One of my favourite consoles of all time.

PS1:

I didn't own such, but I have went to enjoyed especially Medal of Honor, Silent Hill, and Dino Crisis later on via PS2/3 and PSP.

PS2:

I was particularly fond with Sly Cooper, Kingdom Hearts and Shadow of Colossus. SotC still remains to be one of my favorite games ever.

PSP:

Good memories with this system. I remember fondly of Daxter, the first game I got (cause I gotten the PSP 2000 bundle with the game). Two things later on that the system is memorable for me is that it was pretty much the first music player for me, and I also checked out japanese import titles for it, absolutely loving Hatsune Miku: Project Diva 2nd out of the three I gotten.

PS3:

Not quite as memorable on the first party side, but was very happy to see Sly returning. Some good times still on the third party side, like Assassin's Creed 2, Burnout Paradise, Bioshock Inifnite and Mirror's Edge. Also created a JP account through the PS3 to try japanese demos at least heh.

Fondest memory is probably the magazines with demo discs and lid stickers. Trying out game demos at home was a ridiculous concept back then. My PS1 had the happy face sticker on the lid for ages, then the laser assembly spring wore out and it had to be played upside down. Sad day.

Had some good times with the ol PS1

Finishing Resident Evil 2 in one sitting as I did not have a memory card yet.

Playing Castlevania SOTN for the fist time and thinking there's something wrong with the game as it starts at the final battle with Dracula. Only to get my mind blown straight after.

Watching Soul Edge's gorgeous intro movie over and over and getting the button press right at the end of Arcade Mode to see each character's alternate ending.

Getting nauseous while playing Medal of Honor but not being able to put it down.

Unlocking Guile and Classic Chun-Li in Street Fighter Alpha 3.

When Psycho Mantis starts telling you what games you've played and moving the controller around.

Did not own a PS1. But did play Crash. And Spyro on PS2. Had no memory card so we played as far as we could in one day and simply gave up.

Bought my PS2 with babysitting money and bought Dark Cloud 2 after a friend suggested it. Never knew the genre or game. It's one of my top 5 games. Nothing has touched Dark Cloud 2 in terms of being my favourite JRPG.

I've been waiting for a sequel ever since...

PS3 and PS4 are pretty cool, but buying a PS2 isstill a good childhood memory

Not quite at launch, but I used to look down on consoles until the PS1 came out. Some time after launch WipeOut came out, and I had to get myself one :)

I always wanted a PS1, I don't know what it was about the console. Before that I was a Nintendo only user. I eventually got a PS2, and Sony has been my mainstay for home consoles ever since. So many great exclusives, great system designs and the DS4 is such a great upgrade. I was never a huge fan of the PSP or Vita, I have a PSP, but barely touched it and sold my Vita shortly after getting one. Nintendo just makes better handheld games for me.

Didn't have one in my home until 2000, but I think I played a bit of Crash, Twisted Metal, and Spyro a couple years before at other people's houses.

The memory most important to me with this generation is definitely the first time I played Final Fantasy IX.

PS1: My grandmother sent my brother and I a PS1 for our birthday and my only console at that time was a NES. When we first booted up the PS1 we knew we were in for a treat! The PS1 came with a copy of Tarzan and we could not believe what we were seeing/playing. It felt unreal at the time and both of us had grins throughout the entire day.

PS2: Kingdom Hearts bundle. Mmmmmmmmm felt so good. Oh happy days!

PS3: Didn't get a PS3 until senior year of high school and playing GoW3 was blast with friends when they came over!

PS4: Launch day purchase, got Killzone, Madden, and NBA from that Target deal at launch. Recently bought MGSV and it's amazing!
