Wii U Virtual Console - News and Releases

So are SNES VC games just done now? I was really hoping for SNES on 3DS at some point, but I would settle for Actraiser on Wii U. It looks like they have moved on though.

Well, Natsume claimed Nintendo was done with SNES VC games. But at least in NA the last SNES game was just released last week. Actraiser, being a SquareEnix game, has quite bigger problems, though.

I just want to pop in and say that the Klonoa GBA games are two of the best puzzle-platformers ever. The puzzles are really clever, the platforming feels spot-on, and the games offer a good degree of challenge for both your brain and your thumbs. The pacing is really tight too. The games gradually introduce you to new objects/elements and get you to use them in creative new ways. When I think of smart, intuitive level design, these are two of the games that come to mind.

No, it didn't.

The list is incorrect in that regard. JP / PAL only.
And this right here is my main problem with the VC. I'm still waiting on Return to dreamland in NA when Europe has had it since they started selling Wii games on the eshop.
Regional differences like this make no sense to me, and are one of the few things that actually baffle me in regards to Nintendo.

Might be a good time for me to get active again!

I can obviously get the NA games. Can someone get me an easy link to the NoE games?

Actually... I don't see myself remembering to do this often enough. I mean if I haven't done anything in a year, prob won't be starting up again. lol

Would anyone like to take over for me? You would have to create a new thread of course.
But, would be pretty simple to manage, as all you see in the OP is managed by a simple site I made. Allows you to add new systems (like say if Gamecube ever got added), add and update games to them. Like the name, price, regions, pic. Then just use the generated markup up code and edit your OP. Simple.

Anyone interested?

I might be able to do it. Sounds fairly straightforward with that site of yours?!

I'm sure this has been asked a lot, but is there are a reason why so many games are only available on WiiU, but not 3DS? It can't be because of hardware limitations. The GBA castlevanias were portable titles, but are now only available on WiiU, not 3DS. Most of the SNES games I'd prefer to play on 3DS, but they're only on WiiU. I don't get why they're not released for both platforms. It seems only GB/NES games are out on 3DS.

Well, theres no real excuse now that I can run SNES games full speed on my N3DS, even in early stages of retroarch.

The OG 3DS is too weak though.

Oh so it is because of HW reasons. Ok thanks, that's disappointing to hear
Hobbyist emulators using hacks without full system resources don't mean 3DS hardware isn't up to SNES/GBA emulation. BlargSNES and Retroarch I think actually imply the opposite given their high compatibility and speedy progress.

Nintendo could definitely do SNES/GBA(/VB!) on 3DS VC if they wanted. The real issue seems to be that they just don't want to. I mean, they're not even doing more GB/C or NES releases either from the looks of it. Or eShop DS releases like they are for Wii on Wii U. I think they just consider 3DS VC a dead end unfortunately.

The evidence we have shows that the OG 3DS is most definitely too slow for the majority of SNES games. SMW and Zelda would be OK but SA1 and DSP1 emulation is an immediate not a chance in hell, let alone SFX.

The OG 3DS is slower than the PSP.

However...the N3DS isn't. Binding of Isaac and Xenoblade show Nintendo can release N3DS-only games, so where's the SNES VC? And as for GBA, they can be played natively!

Where the hell is Advance Wars 2 for NA

Edit: I hope this isn't port begging, please forgive me if so

AW2 is the only game in the series I haven't played

Out for the past three weeks.

Now, if you were to ask where Metroid: Zero Mission is, I'd understand. That's a bit overdue for the North American eShop, and I fear we'll have to wait until Federation Force's release date for it to be added complementary.

Nintendo hasn't bothered with SFX1/2 on anything so I doubt that matters. And I'm not sure DSP1 or SA1 are out of reach with focused development and speedhacks, or SDD1 and C4 for that matter. Even if they weren't though Nintendo's VC library varies system to system and even VC releases of non-chipped SNES games like Mario World, Earthbound, F-Zero, ALTTP, Super Metroid, etc, would be commercially worthwhile on 3DS. And if they released some chipped titles on n3DS exclusively I don't see an issue there either really.

Regarding 3DS being slower than PSP, that's certainly true for the CPU and I know the RA team is using it as an excuse to prioritize n3DS dev but yet BlargSNES on a vanilla 3DS still runs DKC smoother than any PSP SNES emulator afaik. CPU clock is important but it's not everything, being ARM based versus MIPS probably gives 3DS an advantage in terms of documentation, research and familiarity for homebrew emulators.

You should also keep in mind hax-based 3DS homebrew doesn't afford full system resources (yet) so it's not the best indication of performance end potential. These emulators aren't ground up either, they're all adapted codebases and RA has it's own frontend layer to eat up resources. Actually I'm not sure if BlargSNES or CatSFC even use the GPU?

Nintendo seems to have stopped working on 3DS VC a while ago. Comments from investor meetings seem to suggest that this is because the Wii U emulators will be much easier to bring forward to NX.

Also, I'm sure the fact that the Old 3DS would reach its limit pretty quickly if they tried to add new platforms to it also played a part in that decision.

Makes sense. Would be tough to make games only for the new 3DS since the userbase there is smaller. Harder to justify.

In interviews M2 also revealed Game Gear on 3DS VC underperformed, and that was a factor in them moving to 3D remasters instead for Arcade and Genesis games.

I bet it also was a big factor in them skipping Wii U VC entirely. Which sucks.

Wow, I just realized Donkey Kong Land III was the last 3DS VC game released, back on Feb. 26th. Unless I'm missing something else?

I guess M2's Sega 3D Classics softened the blow a bit for me. So happy those exist.

Was pretty shocked to see that while looking for a new VC game to buy last night.

And on that note, does anyone have recommendations, or like a "top five 3DS VC games" list? I have Tetris and SMB3, and all of the 3D Classics, but I'm craving something new to poke at.

For Game Boy stuff get DK94, the 3 GBC Zelda games, Pokémon Puzzle Challenge and Wario Land 2-3. Mole Mania's pretty great too. Also Trip World if you're in Europe.

Buy DK 94. What are you doing.

Gotta' echo DK '94 and Mole Mania. I'll also recommend Link's Awakening, which is my favorite portable game of all time (DK '94 comes really close though).

Shining force gg, lufia gb, and river king 2 are all fun games that you could put a lot of time into. Plus what the others have already mentioned.

I have a very, very low opinion of NOA but even I'M surprised that Zero Mission still hasn't come out here. Useless fuckers.

It's like they forgot about its existence. I mean, we've gotten pretty much everything else EU has, so I don't really understand why it's still unreleased.

It's sure to come though. Hopefully they don't use it as a marketing tool for Federation Force or we won't have it until 2016.

USA Wii U / 3DS VCs needs a boost. I need Zero Mission GBA, Mario vs Donkey Kong GBA, Super Mario Advance 4 GBA, Final Fantasy III SNES, Chrono Trigger SNES, Super Mario RPG SNES, Wave Race 64 N64, TMNT IV: Turtles in Time SNES (yea yea, I know, make it happen anyway!!), U.N. Squadron SNES (how hard could that license be to get?), Astro Boy Omega Factor (likely not), and is a Wii U version of Castlevania: Rondo of Blood with English translation too much to ask for? Yep, they committed Konami-cide... then there is the GameCube VC that needs to happen. And bring back Tetris GB. I missed that by a month!!

We're still missing some other Nntendo games EU got already. Specifically Star Tropics, Zoda's Revenge, Kurukuru Kururin, Fire Emblem SD, Wario MoD, Brain-Age and Big Brain Academy.

Oh yeah, I forgot they just got the StarTropics games. I love those and I'll get them for $1 each when they bring 'em over.

I'd likely buy every other game you listed as well. Japan and EU got Brain Age long before the DS VC even launched! Can't believe that's not out in NA.

I hope the new nintendo rewards system gives a lot of VC games for free, because its getting harder and harder to justify $5 for a nes game and $8 for a snes game

What VC games? NoA hasn't been releasing anything on the 3DS since forever, and I'm still baffled that Metroid Zero Mission and other games from EU aren't still here.

Free VC was pretty much the only redeemable aspect of Club Nintendo so I'll echo this sentiment.
