GameTrailers Top 20 NES Games Part 1

Gunsmoke
RC Pro Am
Punch Out
Excitebike
River City Ransom
Mario 3

I would put Bionic Commando way higher. One of my favorites

To this day it is one of the most epic and beloved Zelda titles. If only Nintendo continued with the level system and magic system. Sigh.
I don't see how it's either epic or beloved. Those dungeons were full of bad platforming nightmares, there wasn't much of a sense of getting items that unlocked the quest, but rather abilities that made killing things easier, the threadbare the story was barely implemented, and it's frequently, and rightly, called out as one of the most disappointing sequels ever made. Miyamoto even said it was his most disappointing game.

Wikipedia said:
The GBA version of the game had an aggregated score of 73 on Metacritic.[19] and an aggregated score of 68.88 on GameRankings,[18] making it the game of the series with the lowest score in both websites.
So if by "one of the most beloved" you mean "by consensus, and in the words of its creator, literally the worst," then, sure.

Oh god yes, it was a Micronics hack job like 1942, Tiger Heli, and Ikari Warriors. Go back and play those games and you'll notice they all have something in common.

30fps being one of them. I can't even comprehend why GnG is on that list. That game was atrocious on the NES.

kirby's adventure is so easy i can't bring myself to go back to it like i do other classics. though back in '93 it blew my mind that i was playing an NES game, and the system was perfect for the game's minimalist style

my top pick is zelda 1, though if mario 3 gets it i won't be mad. zelda 1 deserves somewhere in the top 5 though... game seems to get overlooked more than it should these days

Kirby's adventure should definitely be higher. I doubt they'll put it, but Super Mario 2 aka doki doki panic needs to be on there.

i love MM4-6 but they were pretty much the "straight to video" equivalent of the nes games. they were just kind of churning them out by that point. good games but nowhere near as inspired as the first 3

though it is bullshit how these lists just slap MM2 on there by default and ignore the rest

I gotta get around to all these games someday. Ghosts 'n Goblins and Castlevania III scare me though. I think I'd play the first Castlevania anyway.

I remember when it came out there was a big marketing push because anyone who rented it found out how lacking it was. There were no store playable displays or anything like that, which was odd given how common that was.

General consensus was that it was rushed out to cash in on NES fever at the time. Kind of like the NES donkey Kong arcade ports.

TBH, I thought all of the NES Mega Man games were top-class. A little easier with 5 and 6, but people treat them like they didn't have anything interesting to bring to the table, which saddens me.

All the more room for Dragon Quest in the top ten.

Nothing too surprising there, to be honest. Expected to see Castlevania closer to the top, though.

They're both doable. Just need patience. Lots.

Castlevania is all about item spam. I won't say which item, but it's breakable.

When Zelda 2 came out, everyone was in love with it. It's not until Zelda LTTP and the other Zeldas came out that some people unfortunately see it as a weird game that didn't work out.

I think it should be in top ten. It's too low.

I'm expecting Mega Man 2 and 3 will be represented, even if there's nothing wrong with the later ones. Those two seem to be the ones people remember most fondly and argue about which is best most often.

I'd also like to see one of Koei's titles on the list. Their later efforts like Romance of the Three Kingdoms 2 or Nobunaga's Ambition 2 made great use of the more advanced NES mappers to put out some impressive strategy titles. I'd be surprised to see that, though.

And as much as I like Zelda II, putting it just outside the top 10 seems about right.

River City Ransom top 10. Id also put Super Dodge Ball obviously but I know that's unreasonable for a top 20.

As someone born in 1988 I am right on the cusp of being a gamer who just has a hard time relating to NES games. Outside of a select Nintendo few the entire library just seems so shallow compared to everything that came after them. Which is bizarre because I relate really well to a ton of original Game Boy games which are arguably more primitive that NES games.

Decent list but I've tried playing some of those and they just don't click with me.

Late '87 (end of November lol) and I have the same problem. I played a lot of GB games but NES just isn't for me usually. But then my gaming era didn't truly begin until PS1 so that's likely some of it.

The top 10 will be interesting to see... I'd predict that Super Mario Bros, Zelda and SMB3 will top it. Decent picks on the whole so far, though, even if I'd not fully agree on the order.

I don't blame you :) I'm older than you so I can say with confidence that these games were revolutionary at the time, very creative, especially with controls and depth of gameplay. Nothing on prior systems even compared.

The lack of save games on NES meant a culture of "endurance" prevailed, learn the game inside and out and play a marathon session. That was a ton of fun and hard to relate to today. Though, Similar attitude as MMOs today.

That said, SNES was my favorite era cuz it was like version 2.0 of nes games, EVERYTHING was improved (particularly graphics). And 16 bit snes holds up today and current indie games borrow alot from that era. 8 bit was good tho, in that it was the weak hardware holding back developers, not like today. So in 1988 it was shockingly creative and fun.

This is perfect. These are truly top 10 nes games. BC holds up TODAY with its challenging gameplay.

Top 5 nes games in no order:

Zelda 2
Mario 3
Mega man 2
Mega man 3
Castlevania 3

It is my opinion that this is fact.

Top 10 is going to be all sorts of SMB3, Megaman, Ninja Gaiden, River City Ransom, Zelda 1, Master Blaster. And if there's justice in this world, Lifeforce will be in there, too.

But my opinion is

Super Mario Bros. 3
Mother
Castlevania
Castlevania III
Mega Man 3
Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!
Mega Man 2

I think Super Mario 3 has to be number 1. SMB is great, but feels much much more dated than 3. 3 really holds up well, even today. The variety is great, the gameplay is great, and it still rivals almost any 2D platformer released since.

I hope they will redo their TOP20 for SNES from 2008, to include more J titles considering their growth in popularity thanks to fan translations and repro carts.

Contra, Ninja Gaiden, and Mike Tyson's Punch-Out are my go to games when ever I get that NES itch.
I doubt NG will be on IGN's list because of it's difficulty.

Good picks, except for GnG lol. Although, Zelda II, Final Fantasy, Castlevania III and Contra seem very low to me.

My list would look something like this (not necessarily in that order):

1. Super Mario Bros. 3
2. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
3. Final Fantasy
4. Mega Man 2
5. Castlevania III
6. Contra
7. Dragon Quest III
8. Ninja Gaiden II
9. Kirby's Adventure
10. Metroid
11. River City Ransom
12. Crystalis
13. Bionic Commando
14. Crisis Force
15. The Guardian Legend
16. Punch Out
17. Shatterhand
18. Metal Storm
19. Blaster Master
20. Little Samson

Zelda II however, is a masterpiece.

I can't take anyone seriously if they say Zelda 2 is a bad game. I legit can't respect their opinion on anything
