My latest Genesis/Mega Drive pickups:

Haven't had a lot of time to really dig in yet, but Monster World IV seems pretty great so far. The controls are incredibly responsive and I love the music.

Sagaia seems neat, too, but man do I suck at space shooters....

Afaik every MD/Genny game that was released before 1992 should be region free. After 1992 it depends. Some are region free, many are region locked.
Yep.

There are also a few early Japanese and US games that won't work on TMSS consoles, so no Model 2 consoles.

Incidentally, I just picked up Alien Storm (for MD), Shinobi 3 and Ranger X (these for the Genesis) today (even though I already had thought I won't buy any more retro this month). But it was a good deal, so.. gonna play Alien Storm! Also been wanting to get Shinobi 3 for a long time. Ranger X is a completely unknown game to me but it looks fun.

... How in the world do you make a top 100 games without, at minimum, including Sonic 2 and/or Sonic 3 & Knuckles? That's crazy! And they should be in the upper parts of the list, too. Mega Turrican and Sonic 1 would also make my top 100. Landstalker, Golden Axe, Shadow Dancer, Aladdin, Streets of Rage 2, Lightening Force, The Adventures of Batman & Robin, Lunar 2 (SCD), and Silpheed (SCD)

I agree with the rest, but let's not get crazy here.

Ranger X is great. Total graphical showpiece. I hope you have a 6 button controller though, as the game controls much better with one. Hell, it'll improve the Shinobi 3 experience as well. Totally worth the investment.

Most of these "gaming journalists" are in the age range fro 20-25 so it seems typical that they would compile a list, really, of modern classics. From here on out this is what I expect.

These are the type of people that make these list.

I don't, but since I only have 1 controller and been meaning to get another one so I can actually play some MD with friends, looks like I'll be getting a 6-buttoner.

Ranger X is nails.

If there's a poll I expect to see this in its rightful place (i.e. top spot):

Data Disks should do an LP of the soundtrack. It's a belter; total Ibiza summer club bangers top ten hits.

I prefer 3 over 2. 2 is still fun but it's a little too derivative of 1 but with some slightly worse execution. 3 at least does something a little different even if it doesn't quite reach the perfection of 1.

How I'd rank the Splatterhouse franchise:

1
3
Winpaku Grafiti
2
Reboot

I dunno, I'd like to think Bosman at least would have good respect for the classics. (At least, whichever ones he actually played.)

Managed to grab a copy of Beyond Oasis and the combat in this game is damn fun. Played past the first dungeon and I am really enjoying it so far.

This has been going on for way longer than when journalists of those ages were active. Classic example would be when I read a huge Contra retrospective in a magazine in the early 2000's (this was around when Shattered Soldier came out). Most of the pages were dedicated to Contra 3, with Hard Corps receiving little more than a mere footnote, and from what was written it was evident they had barely even spent any time with the game. And whenever you read some article about the Genesis or Genesis games in retro-related media online, they just have to throw in some back-handed compliment when describing it, without fail. I can't think of any other successful system that gets consistently treated this way.

I could never get over the reused SoR sound effects in BO. I'm no stranger to asset reuse amongst games of that era ('sup Quintet), but it was just jarring there. I remember thinking, "Why does this monster sound like Donovan when he dies?"

Yuzo Koshiro reuses SFX across all Ancient-developed games since Revenge of Shinobi. They are great though so I don't mind. I just wish that the later games weren't so heavy on low fidelity PCM samples over FM-based effects. Beyond Oasis has some nice unique touches though, with echoes on the footsteps that changes depending on the environment you're in (you'll notice it's stereo when indoors).

Completely agree. It's disgusting.

I noticed this too. Same with Phantasy Star IV and Shining Force, everyone raves about the SNES RPGs and barely ever mention those despite them being just as good as even the best SNES RPGs (sure the SNES had more RPGs, but when listing the best 16-bit ones the Genesis ones always get the shaft).

Managed to grab a copy of Beyond Oasis and the combat in this game is damn fun. Played past the first dungeon and I am really enjoying it so far.
Cool! Beyond Oasis is a short game but very fun, one of my favourites 16-bit games ever. You're in for a treat.

It'd be interesting to see a top 10 GAF Meagdrive games. Shall we do a poll?

Also, would "FMV's do what Nintendont" be a good subtitle for a Sega CD thread?

Sega CD Community Thread |OT| The More you Play it, The Harder it Gets

Sega CD Community Thread |OT| Pretend it's a Game

I really don't understand why A) we're considering a separate Sega CD thread when this thread encapsulates all the Genesis add-ons just fine, and B) why the NES thread's monthly game thing is staying in that thread when the Saturn OT's attempt at that went with separate threads.

Just seems backwards to me...

Because it has more than enough content to warrant its own thread. I have way more SCD games than I do Genesis ones.

And yet the 32X is still relegated to this one? It has several games worth talking about, obviously it should get its own thread as well.

This is a really stupid move, to be blunt. You're just going to splinter discussion.

I look at it this way. Either it will pull in more members keeping the discussion flowing. Or, it will be active at first, then slowly whittle away to nothing and conversation will end up back here. Either way I don't care, I'll go where the Sega talk is.

Not sure if anyone has posted about this already, but Good Will's online shop has some gems if you are willing to sift through it's pages.

Sadly, I can't take advantage myself because I'm outside the U.S...

Yeah I agree with that first one. No real need to splinter off another thread that fits fine with this one. I genuinely like the Sega CD too, unlike the 32x, so it's not me thinking it doesn't deserve it's own thread, just that it works how the threads currently are.

We could however move the 32x to it's own space.
The dumpster.

Right, there's no harm done IMO. At best it gets the SCD more attention. It'll be a good proving ground for recommendations.

Yeah. 2 was fun because its a good game, but 1 just felt more like they were focused on establishing the game. Havent played 3, Wanpaku, or the reboot yet.

I think with the NES one, it was meant to try and foster more actual game discussion and not just price talk...but on that note, the GB club has its own thread outside the GB collection thread.

I'm good either way to be honest (i'm hoping the Sega CD thread can pull some hidden gems outta the ether).

Shopgoodwill used to be awesome 2-3 years back. Now its full of shill bidders and people that pay waaaay too damn much for things.

I like the first one.

I'll see what other people think of these titles and will pick the one thats most popular.

Maybe show some pictures of Sonic CD, Snacther, and Night Trap for the opening post?

The other essentials include Lunar, Dark Wizard, Popful Mail(Falcom!), Heart of the Alien(SCD exclusive sequel to Out of this World), and Road Avenger(seriously, the game is gorgeous).

Road Avenger looks like it could be ridiculous fun. Is it available on any other systems? I have no idea if my Sega CD works or not as I don't have any of the cables for it, nor a CRT anymore.

Not sure. Maybe PC? You could just watch it on youtube, playing it is intense, but it's really worth it for the visuals. I love the opening song, too. Heh, there's an urban legend on Sega-16: no one knows who wrote it.

Will I see, you agaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaain

That opening gives me chills, I couldn't believe my eyes when I first played it. It's like a classic interactive 80s anime.

It's by the same studio that did Fist of the North Star. Funny how both of them cover the respective ends of the spectrum for Mad Max inspiration.

My only gripe is that the final level is over way, way too fast. In a span of around 30 seconds you wipe out the entire rival gang.

Hell of a finale, though.

It was released on iOS back in 2011 as Road Blaster. It played pretty well, but unfortunately, it's been removed from the app store.

The song was something else too.. I was surprised when I had played the JP version and the lyrics were in Japanese. The name of the group was J-WALK, and their singer apparently was bilingual.
