that's what's annoying to me. maybe this episode should've just been the season premier.

Would've worked way better. And even then, it has the usual prequel problem of it having no narrative tension because you know that the old wise mentor is gonna teach him everything, die and he makes it to alexandria.

Edit: not just that, we know that this Aikido ends up having very negative consequences in this universe (Rick killing the guys Morgan let go)

yep. you know it's gonna happen because even in the little bits of morgan in season 5 he is alone. so that makes it a little unsettling to watch knowing what's coming.
