Halo 5: Guardians Smashes Record with Biggest Halo Launch (games/hardware) in History

Makes for a nice PR headline and i guess they must be happy with the "hardware and software" revenue. Sounds like it didn't do massive numbers though, NPD will be interesting.

Where are you people getting controller + req packs being included in the gross amount? Cant see it in the PR.

$400+ million for a Halo launch over a week is still spectacular. All but confirms Halo is a juggernaught franchise.

Im personally having a blast, the multiplayer has recaptured Halo 2 for me.

Read the PR again. It says games AND hardware.

You don't need to spend a penny in Clash of clans too. Doesn't mean the microtransactions arent intrusive and game changing. We've had threads where people were affected by the Req packs.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1133444

Still don't see how it is less intrusive than hats. In fact I think it's one of the worst types of microtransactions. Randomly generated packs that affect gameplay. Not sure why people are happy about this, it seems so counter intuitive. Anyway this is greatly OT.
Lol. Do you know how war zone even works? Just because you pick up a card doesn't even mean you can use it in a match. Warzone works fine. If you don't like the system arena works great too and you can earn credits for cards as well. You can earn a damn gold pack every 3-4 matches. Even if you decide to to buy packs till you get every card you must increase your req level in a match and while spawning with a sniper or rockets is useful most inexperienced players are gonna die and lose them anyway. Tanks and banshees aren't too hard to kill if your team puts pressure on them. It just works. I wont spend a dime and I will get DLC free. I also have never felt at a disadvantage playing war zone and I am just a little above average player. I don't think you have played it and you are bitching based on what you have read.

... to be expected, with larger install bases almost every mainstream exclusive is gonna be the new fastest-selling.

Come on now, that's nowhere even remotely close to being true. All it means is each new mainstream exclusive has a legitimate shot to become the new fastest selling, but it is by no means a guarantee like you make it out to appear.

Tomb raider is not exclusive either. Exclusive is something like Halo or Uncharted or Bloodborne or Sunset Overdrive.

He's saying that MS positions it as an exclusive. They do with Tomb Raider (well, it is timed, so true enough to a degree).

Truth be told, I'm not sure if Titanfall counts or not.

Hey people from the UK sales thread!

]
You should be eating crow, That statement they could be 22% instead of 20%, It's all PR spin since they want to brand to show that it's as healthy as ever. I wish they would release exact numbers especially for digital but no company really does that.

You are proving exactly what was said in the UK thread but you are trying to pretend that everyone else is wrong.

Anyone else see the words and it just sounds like they are playing some incredible word games to make it sound much better then it might be.

Including hardware in the revenue equation? Best first party attach rate? Number of streams going on?

Why can't they just say, " we sold 2.3 mill copies week 1, it is awesome! ". These kind of word games makes me think the overall sales are much lower so they found different avenues to make the overall accomplishment sound historic.

Look, it's not something I have out for Halo specifically. I actually stopped playing The Last of Us MP because of this shit. I don't want anyone to have any potential gameplay advantage over me because they happen to have spent money on micro transactions. That shit rubs me the wrong way. And just as in LoU people could essentially buy better load outs, in Halo 5 you can just buy packs that make your chances of getting better weapons, vehicles, unlockables etc much greater. It takes long enough saving up for these packs that it incentivises buying them even more, and that annoys me.

Luckily Naughty Dog have seen the error of their ways (I fucking hope) and claim they will no longer have gameplay affecting shit behind micro transactions, and that's how it should be. Hopefully if enough people throw up a stink, 343i will do the same, but given the receptiveness of many Halo fans to micro transactions (which is bewildering in itself), I somehow doubt it.

Cosmetic unlockables ≠ gameplay affecting shit

Since the REQ packs are priced fairly and subsidize free DLC, I have no problem with them. It's much milder than some other MP games.

So I guess we're just waiting for NPD?

How much money do Microsoft usually put into a Halo game anyways? I'm guessing it's 1st week revenue takes care of that?

For comparison

Halo 3 '2007' made $170 million in first day US sales and $300 million in worldwide first week sales. In the U.S., Halo 3 sold 3.3 million copies in its first 12 days on sale. On January 3, 2008, Microsoft announced that Halo 3 has sold 8.1 million copies. According to Microsoft, Halo 3 had sold 14.5 million copies as of 2012.

Reach made $200 million in first day sales, It sold 4.7 million units by September 2011, one year later.

Halo 4 made $220 million worldwide in first day sales. Best selling Halo game in the US during launch year.

It's because they sequestered it to one mode in particular, so it's easy for traditional halo fans to ignore.

Understanding that the PR spin is not only including Halo 5 copies sold, it is still very telling that the Franchise did good after what happened with Halo MCC.

I also think that the PR spin also helps as a marketing tool, I mean, someone outside of forums such as GAF, will see the news as "Best Halo release ever" and feel compelled of buying halo 5 in the holidays.

They did the same for Halo 4 and it sold 3 million it first week I think. MS doesn't give sales numbers

Thats an assumption that it means controller. Its reasonable to assume but lets not take it as fact. To me it sounds like game copy + console.

Not to mention that the controllers were out 3 weeks (?) before Halo 5 release? Why would they include those 3 weeks of sales in the 4th week?

You clearly haven't played it for more than a round. I used about 2 tank cards and 3 ghost cards, and I got booted out of both tanks and one of the ghosts as soon as I got in the middle of the fight. Weapon/vehicles cards are pretty much useless. Costmetics even less so, which makes no sense for people to spend "hundreds of hours" like you say for unlocking cosmetics. If you think spending hundreds of hours on unlocking useless crap, then you need to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. Is it worth spending that much time to get some armor that looks 20-30% different than another armor that you already have? Or get an armor that you don't even see when you are playing and only see it on the killscreen or main menu?

You were probably just unlucky, or had your positioning wrong. Some fucking tank was spawn camping one of our bases in one match I had, and it took long enough to take it out because he kept moving in and out of these rocks. Shortly after two more tanks showed up, and that shit absolutely sucked.

Vehicles and power weapons are not just useful against other spartans either, but bosses as well. I watched a dude essentially steal a boss kill rocking up with a rocket launcher and dishing out mass damage. I have like 15 hours in to the MP and have barely unlocked many of the seriously potent power weapon cards.

And yes, of course I care about collecting cosmetics, making my character look awesome, getting the best weapons, unlocks, emblems etc. That's sort of one of the key incentives to these types of games no? The thing that made Call of Duty so popular in the first place.

Are they counting those Halo controllers they are selling as well? If so whoever comes up with good numbers for Microsoft is a genius.

why not tell us the copies

saying the biggest launch can mean anything

"I need those numbers so I can use them to help strengthen my argument that Halo is dying and should be dead!!! WHY DON'T YOU RELEASE THE NUMBERS!"

You all sound like Republicans wanting Obama's birth certificate.

Hmm I was told otherwise (UK sales thread).

Good stuff anyhow. It's a cracking game, multiplayer is Insanely good.

They included hardware into that number?

That's genius, lol. Makes it hard to actually extrapolate how many copies the game sold.

That's what it sounds like to me. Someone buying a Halo 5 themed console obviously meant to spend their money on satisfying their Halo geekness.

When they say "biggest Halo launch", they don't just mean the game do they? Probably includes the Halo themed controllers and systems.
PR did a great job with this.

Well. I hope the game is doing as well as this press release makes it sound. The game is great. Most fun I have had with competitive multiplayer in ages.

Okay, fair enough about the weapons.
But you think that spending hundreds of hours to unlock cosmetic armor and visors is a viable life expenditure?

Why can't people just say "Congratulations on the awesome sales" and move on?

Why do you have to know 100% of the sales details to know if did good? Did they play on PR a bit sure, but it doesn't change the fact they made a ton of money and the game is a success, just say congrats and move on holy hell.

Because according the narrative in that thread the game bombed.

Nah, I don't think that was the narrative at all. The narrative was more like, the franchise had a huge decline from past titles.

Something, mind you, we absolutely cannot confirm or deny in relation to the US/WW with this PR.
