100MB+ GIFs - how is this still a thing?

Is there something like this for imgur hosted GIFs? They convert all the GIFs to their vídeo format as well, and its as simple as putting a "v" after "gif"
As far as I can tell its not possible to do it properly for imgur. There's no easy way to tell from the URL if a video version of an embedded GIF exists.

The extensions I've seen claiming to do it all look busted to me. It's been awhile though so I'll take another look when I have the chance.

Two cannibals are eating a clown. One turns to the other and says "does something taste funny to you?"
I've been wondering why my mobile data usage is so fucken high despite me never doing anything

Is there an extension that will block them over a specific size?

How the hell is Apple still not supporting WebM is a bigger question.
I think they're holding things back a lot.
They were so big on killing Flash in favor of HTML5 but won't support a royalty free HTML5 video.

We will get embedded webm right after the return of the Who Quoted Me button.

So should be soon I guess.

Any time now.

It happens a lot in the Destiny Community thread for some reason. First I just added anyone who posted them to my ignore list but that was just annoying. At this point I don't even bother reading the thread any more.

No one seems to realise what they're doing.

Did you tell them?

but but but internet explorer and safari!!
Well, yeah, Safari. It's that thing that you use to see the internets on iphone and ipad, and you have no other options really. That's a huge amount of gaf population being cut off from seeing them.

GAF should adopt h264 videos instead. Same thing functionally, but plays on everything.

They seem to have seething hatred for Google, that's how.

I always try to make mine around 5 MB or less, but I have been guilty of going up to 10 MB. Anything more than that sounds insane.

I agree this is a problem and it is an annoying one. I exit out of threads if I realize they're especially GIF heavy. On my phone if there are enough large GIFs it tends to crash the browser outright.

Disable GIFs on mobile.

A) It doesn't work correctly on GAF, as a poset above me explains.

B) Why should I have to miss out on content because one guy or a handful of people have poor internet etiquette,or whatever? He knows he does it, even.
I've seen people bring it up and I've brought it up myself with him and his response is usually "LOL (Even bigger GIF.) Sucks to be you!"

It'd be common courtesy and an extra 30 seconds to just make smaller, slightly lower quality gifs, but some people actually think it's funny to *not* and eat up people's bandwidth, instead.

It was even *worse* a while back when Chrome was having major problems with loading and displaying GIFs.
You couldn't even go into a thread with Uber and a couple other posters on *desktop.*

Hm. That sucks.

Maybe the mods need to figure out some rules on large GIFs.

I always thought 5 MB was pushing it, but there are some people who never lived with slow Internet.

It'd be great if we could embed webm's already.

Huge GIFs are fucking horrible. 15mb is the largest your gif should be, and if it's 15mb then it should be like flawless quality or last 3minutes.

The best solution would be to allow to embed Imgur's gifv format and/or generic h264 video which can easily be forced into muted and looped playback to behave like a gif.

I don't understand why we can't embed mp4/webms here. Just make it so they never auto-play and that they're muted by default. GIFs are really archaic.

You'll still have people posting large GIFs though.

There's another thing. GIFs play on iphone embedded in the post. I don't think it's possible to have embedded videos in a web page like that. On iphone (but not ipad) you have to press the play button on a video, then video goes full screen. Then you have to close it and keep scrolling. It's fairly inelegant compared to GIFs.

I don't understand why people want a video format to replace an image format.

Because the image format is being misused to embed short videos despite being completely inadequate for that task. (Large file sizes, limit of 256 colors.)

There is no good reason to prefer WebM over h264. The only reason WebM exists is because it is patent free, at least for now. And that is not relevant to us users. h264 has better technical performance, is standardized, widely supported, and has hardware acceleration in every device released over the last years.

No, not short videos, GIF do not carry audio and the problem with GIF is not audio related... we need a better image format not a video one to substitute it.

I'd argue animated gif is much closer to a video than an image. But also apng and webp haven't gained much traction in terms of static/animated image formats. From a tech standpoint H.264, WebM and friends have substantially better compression which means they can be more detailed and take a fraction of the space. In bandwidth limited environments this is a huge win. Even on CPU bound machines it would at least be feasible to unpack a video into an animated gif but the reverse has little benefit since you already had to grab the data.

h264 is not an audio format. gifv uses h264 and does not support audio.

it doesn't matter which format people use. gaf just needs a way to generate a html5 video player using bbcode.

It took me all of 2 minutes to implement it on other forums, and they work just like GIFs. The play button is optional.

WebM was great when people still posted small stuff, now its giant ass webms that take forever to load. Same problem

the difference is videos load on demand. if someone embeds a 170mb gif it's just going to download it unless you forcibly stop the tab from loading.

Of course the format matters. WebM is not supported on many platforms. Contrary to flash which comes with the actual implementation of a player, HTML5 just refers to a video file and leaves the decoding and playback to the browser. If the browser does not support a format it just won't play.

you can't force people to use mp4 because webms are an inconvenience to Apple users

most people would just be copy/pasting stuff they find elsewhere anyway. They don't care about the format.

Why would anyone want to use the format that reaches less people with no added benefits?

it's not about wanting to use one format over another. A lot of the time people are just posting stuff they find elsewhere and not actually making it. if it exists in a webm container they aren't going to change that and then reupload it somewhere. I mean there's a fairly large part of the web that shares content in the webm format, it's not going to change.

Really? That's kind of an advantage actually.

It is, that's why they did it. If you're on mobile you likely don't want to download a 200MB ad video over your expensive data plan. I've had to explain this to several clients who really wanted video backgrounds and don't understand why it's a bad idea on mobile, luckily Apple did it for me so I can just say "can't do it" and that's that.

eh id rather everyone else benefit from webm even if safari cant
like other say a third party addon wont cut it
it needs to be bbcode option here on gaf so we can start telling people with 10+mb gifs to knock it off

gif is archaic as hell

just add some fallback code saying like "sorry there would be a webm here if you had a better browser"

Well that sucks but having embedded videos changes nothing for mobile. It's not stopping people from posting gifs.
