Final Fantasy VII Remake is a multi-part series

What's wrong with multiple game disks? The original had 3 in the box... Maybe, so should the remake (or more if needed). My level of enthusiasm for this game went from really high, to really low pretty quickly. But I'll wait and see. Hopefully we get better news, sooner than later.

Now I'm scared for REmake 2...

Well, no thanks. Chopping up a HD Remake of a full game is nonsense. I hope the negative backlash on this is so overwhelming that Square pulls their head out of their ass.

And now I also kinda hope that the new Hitman bombs so incredibly hard that "Episodic" is never even a passing thought for full games for them again.

I think this could be the best case scenario:

Part 1 - Bombing mission to exit of Midgar - Q4 2017
Part 2 - Exit of Midgar to Aeris death - Q4 2018
Part 3 - Aeris death to end - Q4 2019

Might be better than waiting until end of 2019 for the whole thing.

Board room all-staff meeting wire tap:

Suit: ...Why give them the full remake as a single game? Seems like a missed opportunity to me. Why not split it up into 'episodes' and sell each as its own 'game', aka 'unique experience'?

Rank employee: But sir... won't they see through that? I mean the original game does exist...

Suit: These suckers have been begging for this for years. They'll eat whatever shit we feed them.

Rank and file employee: Yes sir. We'll make it happen.

Fuck this. No longer day 1 for me. Might not even be day-every unless a "complete edition" is released.

It was too good to be true, wasn't it?
As much as I wanted a return to TB, I was mostly fine with them changing the battle system, even interested to see how good it'd be. But this? This is a hype killer for me.
Guess I'll be on the XV train fulltime from now on. My expectations for this remake are really low until I hear some very convincing explanations about how this is even going to work. For now it seems lke the perfect excuse to scale down and streamline the game, something I was worried about from the beginning.

This gifset I made earlier today was just a joke, but now it may be all too real...

Don't really get the FF13 comparisons. Those were individual games, that were sequels to each other. This is going to be one game broken up into multiple pieces so by definition we wont be getting a proper beginning/middle/end.
Is it?

No troll, but they're treating this a lot like a reimagining than a simple remaster. The combat looks different from what little we've seen. What if they treated this like Mass Effect? Basically they're different games with an overarching story connecting them, with each being a full game? This would allow them to tweak systems and such between each game, like Mass Effect. Character progression may or may not carry over. I dunno.

This just seems more like a totally different beast. I'm cautiously excited. Of course this could be a total cash grab clusterfuck as well.

Didn't the original FFVII come in multiple discs? That has an over world, or am I missing something here? It's the 'unique experience' part that's scaring everyone, isn't it?

Yes.

You finally step out of Midgar and stare at the beautiful distance. A huge overworld stretches as far as the eye can see, rendered in perfect HD graphics. Your characters look stoic and prepared. Ready for a new adventure.

"To be continued in Final Fantasy VII Remake, Part 2".

FUUUUUUUCK.

Then you have to wait 6 months for the next episode. You finally download it, start it and...

Your characters immediately start at Kalm. You cannot leave the town. Cloud comments on how amazing it was to get there, to fight the monsters, to see the creatures, to see the hills and plains.

This.
It's amazing that people are okay with this.

Total guess here: their version of remake is a retelling of the game in a different format (more linear, seemingly more cinematic from what they've shown)

Looks like a lot of cutscenes, probably some exploration but no major open world whatever

I'd wager their plan is, seeing as it exists solely as a fan service thing, it will be a fan service thing. A pretty retelling of the game with different gameplay. It'll be divided because it's a whole lot of cutscenes and stuff.

People expecting something like a Telltale game.... there is zero reason to believe that (yet)

This is not the next ambitious mainline Final Fantasy game, it's a fun tech showcase for fans with the characters/story they love.

The problem is, you can still explore the world and track back to towns and cities that you have visited in the original 3 discs game. With this being and episodic game, do you believe you can still do that? How about the optional bosses and quests? Lots of thing will be cut.

And your example is just perfect reflection of this. This will be a linear game like a movie. Is the original FFVII linear?

I'm not defending this at all. You can't cohesively split a story that is already written into 3 parts unless you sacrifice gameplay for story.

There's no way this gets better reviews than the original. Fans will hate it.

...I more meant like VII-2 will cover other stuff, new stuff, etc...not that it will be episodes.

I don't think this would be the case. They would call it a remake if they were going to be completely new stories. New content sure. But completely new story seems unlikely.

This might explain why people were surprised they were showing so much stuff about it so soon.

I'm guessing we will still have the base game but they'll include side stories/DLC or other remakes like:

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Remake
Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII Remake
Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII Remake
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Remake (playable)

or even

Episode Vincent DLC
Episode Yuffie DLC
Episode Nibelheim DLC

Since 70-80% will use almost use the same assets.

I was thinking of something like this, perhaps this might also mean releasing things like Crisis Core as part of the remake.

Hey guys, their primary focus is FFXV.

Remember FFXV? The game that never was, the game that was another game that they first rebooted and then renamed because they had no real FFXV and had wasted too much money on a game to be just a side entry?

Remember how it's been five years from the only FFXIII entry that matters and we have no FFXV nor a hint about FFXVI?

Good times.

I don't know how they'll keep the world map and exploration with this decision.
The first part in Midgard will be perfectly fine and then?
I fear they'll get rid of the map for a more linear cinematic presentation similarly to the movie and...FFXIII.
Still I don't think that Nomura would compromise the spirit of the game so much.
I'd wait for more details.

Also multi part per se is not bad at all if it means starting to play this in 2017 instead of waiting 4 years.

I mean, this makes so FUCKING sense now.

Versus XIII was a Nomura direct game that would have it's story splitted in parts. Now the FF VII Remake has the Versus XIII gameplay and it's gonna be splitted in parts.

FF7 is about as linear as most JRPGs were back then. The plot advances in the same order every time, but can wander around once you get on the world map, and there's the two optional characters (both of which I suspect will become main characters).

It's not linear like say, FF13, but generally speaking, all FF games are linear at their core.

Honestly, I'm the kind of person that would pay $200 for the full experience, as long as they leave no stone un-turned and add a lot of content. Because as long as this game plays well I know I'm going to love all of it.

I know other people won't, and I'm not trying to rationalize it but that's what I think.

Just the thought of starting FFVII for the first time and then end with a "To Be Continued" ruins the entire fucking thing. It ruins the hype. It ruins the reviews for the games. It ruins the consistency of the game. It ruins the immersion. It ruins fucking everything.

I would assume the real question is how to handle replayability while the "strory" is on hold.

But hey soon enough we will get a prologue demo that will lead into the actual game. But you will have to pay for that though.

Breaking up a story we all know into multiple episodes for a remake of one 30 hour rpg game is a terrible idea. I want the whole freaking game Square, all or nothing.

The disk are a totally minor concern. The issue is the production costs and timetables required for something like this.
Yep especially since everything is on the HDD anyway.

Disc don't matter. They're do if this to make money on the project.

They wouldn't be able to do that without seriously changing the nature of the story. Which would be a huge problem in itself.

They should just cancel this game and shift workers towards FFXV. maybe with enough effort they can run it at 20+fps.

FFVII: Remake added to the Jump Festa 2016 lineup!

Maybe more info on the release format later this month!?

http://www.jp.square-enix.com/jf16/#list

It's only marked as showing the most recent trailer, so I wouldn't bet on it.

Famitsu's also reiterating the news:

http://www.famitsu.com/news/201512/07094703.html

The Final Fantasy VII Remake - reborn on the Playstation 4 - will be developed as a "divided work" [very literal translation] as we review plenty of content in order to create a full remake. Details will be provided when it's possible to give an update, so please look forward to it.

Well if the episodes work like the discs, that would be best case scenario imo. It just seems so shady, and they really make it sound awful.

Yeah, the word 'episodic' really doesn't seem to have any justified use in this discussion. It's one story being told over multiple games, but we have no reason to assume each game will feel incomplete as a result.

However it will be different from the original - and that's enough to set people off.

Just remember that translations don't always come through accurately. They may mean something entirely different than we are thinking.

Again, why are people saying "well the original had 3 disks". Yea the original had 3 disks which all came in the same package when the game released. The longest wait you had between "episodes" was the 30 seconds it took you to get up and change disks.

Yoshichan

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
I swear, Square is gonna be the end of me. My heart is aching right now. I mean, actual literal pain like knives. Only thing keeping me on the positive side is the small, tiny hopes of this shit being divided into three parts like the discs and not... seven or whatever.

You do realize there's a tangible difference though, right? Removing exploration? Choosing when you want to advance and how?

So I'm guessing this means there won't be any large sidequests or a world map? How is backtracking going to work with the game spread across 3+ episodes?

Say I'm at Junon and I need to go back to the dig site or something for an item.

PLEASE INSERT FFVII-4

Would the old disk even know about this new side quest anymore? They'd have to make sure everything was perfectly planned out and programmed in advance (unless they want to do some major patch work later on).

The original PSX game was done across 3 disks, but each disk essentially had the entire world on it so there was no mid-area switching.

It's going to be a re-telling, it's not a straight up remake.

It's pretty clear now this thing is going to be episodes of the best of FFVII

This whole game's existence seems so depressing to me, all because FF fans have lost hope in Square Enix making new games that they put their hopes in an old game.
