Final Fantasy VII Remake is a multi-part series

The list of cuts from FF7 are going to be massive in the end.

They really should've called this "FF7: Reimagining" or something. Anyway this thread is glorious.

What? All of the scenes were always going to be from the beginning. The bombing mission is iconic.

Why would they have stuff from late in the game in the first gameplay trailer anyway?

There are a lot of iconic moments in that game, of which they've shown nothing in gameplay. A "gameplay" trailer (and again, a great deal of that was cutscenes, not gameplay) could easily show gameplay in a ton of different environments to show off how things work.

Typically games aren't worked on from beginning to end. Stuff is being done in tandem all across the length of the game. Unless, of course, the game is episodic.

Watch trailers of previously released games and you'll see that rarely is everything shown from only the very beginning of the game.

edit: oh god top of the page why

i'm alternating between laughing and going "welp, wait and see." Not sure what to feel, really, but I can understand the reaction from who've been less than pleased with Square-Enix over recent years.

At the very least, I plan on playing through most of the Final Fantasy series for the first time next month, so it's not like I'm in any rush to play this. By the time I'm finished, the whole game may've already been released.

also the Xenosaga comparison is insane. That series was designed from the get go to span multiple games with the first one's story and cast being stretched out due to budget and creative meddling.
If this is a true reimagining, which it seems to be, then it's potentially not a bad comparison, seeing as how we know next to nothing about this game outside of the major story beats.

I think people need to view this as more of a new entry than a remake. They're shaking up a lot with this game, so saying something won't work when we have so little information is the insane thing to me.

The difference here is that Resident Evil is a short shitty game. Can't really compare that to FFVII.

You're good at reading, it seems. Good fucking job.

XIII <-> XIII-2 <-> Lightning Returns FFXIII

Three titles, all in which have a total of exploration, content (side-quests, as well as main story) and much more than FFVII itself.

lol i wrote that just to see your reaction. Chill man :D

Lol yeah people just immediately assume they have to accept shit. But look how the #PS4NoDRM campaign turned out. Social media campaigns CAN be effective. Whether we have the full story or not is irrelevant. If they're even CONSIDERING butchering FFVII with these episodes, a preemptive campaign COULD avert that. But instead you get 50 troll posts and a thread closure in two minutes. And these are the people name-calling others as 'childish'.

Social media can definitely make a change
But Gaf is not the place to launch a social media campaign

Good thing Square Enix ignores any feedback and doesn't do jack with twitter. >_<

The cross dressing scene. One of the outfits will be Lightning.
OH MY FUCKING GOD you are right. I swear to god. O_O

Sorry, but I was hoping that it wouldn't end up split. Sucks. I'll buy it when the entire thing is available... in 2025.

Wasnt Rev2 episodes releases like a week apart?

If this was the case with FF7Remake o think it could be actually good. But they are separating prpbably because they cant make the game fast enough, so i dont see it.

yeah FF7 won't be like that ,but it could still be a fantastic experience at the end of the episodic releases much like Rev2 was.

It could just be a more realistic, feasible way to put out this giant game.

Whether we have the full story or not is irrelevant.

Nah, it's pretty relevant actually.

Maybe get loud and organize a campaign to receive that full story, then if and when you're successful go ahead and launch a preemptive strike to try talking them out of it, depending on what you've heard.

Me? I've no qualms saying that depending on how it's split and in what fashion and in how many parts I not only accept the scenario but see it as potentially outweighing the bad.

That may have not been what a lot of people wanted, but it's probably the only way the remake could have happened at all.

Stop saying this. Any game can be made. People weren't excited about FF7R because they thought it would be easy to pull off - they were excited because of the scope of what it meant.

When it was announced people were buzzing with excitement going "It'll be on multiple blu-rays!", bringing back the nostalgia of a game so massive you had to crack open the packaging more than once over the course of playing it.

We were not buzzing with excitement because we were like "OMG It'll be too big, I can't wait to buy the season pass!!!"

Why not? I want a faithful representation of FF7 in terms of content.

Overworld exploration with the Highwind will surely be present, right?
Oh, and I'd love to do gold chocobo breeding all over again so I can tackle any obstacle in the overworld. Getting to the isolated land at the edge of the map will be easy with a gold chocobo. Finding emerald weapon in the middle of an ocean will be pretty amazing too!

Maybe if you ignore quite a few of the newer games.
those shitty sequels were made years and years later after the fact. the original 12 final Fantasy games were designed as standalones and the rule of the series was no direct sequels.

until Wada took over.

If it actually turns out that they are cutting the game in multiple parts and selling them across several years. Fuck square, they are dead to me.

But if it really is a complete reimagining of the game, with an original story that completely expands on the originals scope, I think that will be ok. I mean, this could just mean a lot more of the FF7 world. As long as we get a complete, satisfying JRPG with each entry, I don't see a problem. And I get why they would do that, seeing as how much everyone loves the world/characters from 7.

Has anyone from Square ever commented on if they're trying to wrap any of the AC/BC/CC/DC stuff in or is the whole project based purely on the original FF7?

Stop it with your reasonable logic. We just have to accept this because thats just how things are according to some people.

Why do y'all have to go on that "stop with your reasonable logic" and go on a tangent on a strawman that completely misses the point.

We know we are getting info at Jump Festa. People not expressing outrage by not spiraling down a list of assumptions is literally the exact opposite of logic, it's entirely illogical.

Until we get info in less than 2 weeks time, I don't see why people are "disgusted" that they are telling others to take a breather.

Man, you really had to turn it up to 451, did you, lol.

It's been my opinion for a while that Square Enix's place and time in history has become sub-optimal for recapturing past glory. That the machine is probably just not healthy enough.

The latest trailer had me cautiously optimistic.

Now I know why I was cautious.

I believe they are much better than a few years ago. To me, at least, I have no reason to think they will screw this. I still think it's going to be great, episodic or not.

Revelations 2 was written and designed as an episodic game. Final Fantasy VII is supposed to take place in a massive connected world without any cliffhangers. If the reason they're doing this is because of cost/time, then expect to wait at least a year between "episodes."

Imagine if REmake had been split up into 3 episodes:

EPISODE 1: The Mansion
EPISODE 2: The Residence
EPISODE 3: The Mansion Again + Lab

We can't supposed based on the original because we have no idea what changes they will make. They already said they are changing the story.

We are also supposing about the cost/time reason, which I believe is true. Even in this case, I doubt it will be a whole year between each episode as the public interest would completely vanish. My guess is that each part will be quite big and perhaps 2-4 months between releases.

[wishful thinking]

If this mean I can start playing FF7R two years earlier than I could the "full version", I'm all for it. This is a big game, and cutting a game into several parts honestly did not surprise me.

edit- hoooly fuck this thread got big :D

Try this instead.

This is the real problem.

The problem with VII - R up to this point is not showing a lot, or communicating really anything.
The original trailer? Great
Gameplay trailer? Great

But the problem is they do nothing to address the real fears of VII being remade, what will the gameplay ACTUALLY be? What is their approach to take a modern sensibility on an almost 20 year game.

The problem is you can't be as coy as you can with a new Final Fantasy (it. XV), it's something that needs to be handled totally differently.
Shenmue 3 suffered something really similar is that in the first few weeks, details on everything were incredibly vague and people were freaking the fuck out.
Then they released more and more details and clarifications WITHOUT spoiling anything to settle any fears as to a) how will they bring something as huge as Shenmue 3 to current day while keeping within a budget b) the publishing agreement with Sony.

SE have announced one of the biggest deals in gaming for a long time.
Now they need to explain how it's going to be possible.

I think our discussion is going to get lost in this sea of hilariousness, but I agree. It's a weird byproduct of a past age of gaming, where they'd drop a few hints in a magazine, or a few screens, with like one paragraph of semi-new information. EGM was particularly bad about this with FFX until they had a huge spread out for the game.

I think game companies in general need to handle their business with bigger games like this better.

Can we please, for the LOVE OF ALL THAT IS NOMURA, WADA OR WHOEVER THE FUCK YOU PRAISE ON THIS PLANET, STOP SAYING SHIT LIKE "This worked with Xenosaga, Telltale Games, Mass Effect, Portal, IDGAF.

FINAL FANTASY VII, is a COMPLETE package. The fans of this game KNOWS what to expect of it. VIDEO GAME SERIES like Xenosaga are games that have been 'episodic' from the get-go. You've got directors, writers, all that shit KNOWING that the game will be a trilogy or whatever. FFVII is NOT supposed to be divided like that. At least the FFVII we know and have played. At this point I don't even fucking know what game they'll actually provide.

I bet this piece of shit will have Genesis and that other shithead I don't care about.
Ok..

Now you're either stepping out of bounds or UNREALISTICALLY asking for a 1 to 1 HD remake the market will not support.

Someone else probably already mentioned this but I'm not sifting through 43 pages to find it; this may just be the original's Disc 1-3 released individually. If each was released physically and were $20 each this could actually be great as it would allow them to get part of it out sooner rather than waiting till the end of the current generation to get the game. May also explain the use of Disc 1 only scenes in the latest trailer. I'm of the wait and see mindset right now.

What games are we talking about? Most JRPGs these days (including the Tales series) have pretty noticeable budget constraints in their assets, animation, etc.

Honestly the last old style scaled jrpg I can think of made as an AAA game is Blue Dragon. Even Lost Odyssey had a lot of cutbacks like FFXIII did. Not as linear tho.

FF 13 trilogy is pretty much considered to be a huge let down. And working on 13-2 and 13-3 DID take resources away - big time. FF 13 came out in 2009. We are nearing SEVEN years without a new mainline title, thanks to the fucking trilogy (and that stupid MMO).

I didn't give two shits about square, they lost my faith with the whole fucking FF 13 trilogy (and the game itself). A FF 7 remake was all I ever wanted. They showed it to me, only to now take it away from me. I wouldn't have cared if they had never shown it to me, but this way is just utterly disgusting. And that fucking half sentence is really flat out INSULTING to me. The knew it is utter shit, but they hid it consciously. They let my hype build up only to now break me apart. That's the biggest problem here.

Holy shit dude you're like a living parody 👌

So like I said above - charge me $100 for the final product, I really don't care and I have a feeling most gamers would not care. This is FF7. It will sell all its copies at almost any price between $60-$150, especially collector's editions. Don't split it across multiple games.
2021, FF7R complete edition. I am positive this will happen.

Episode 1-2016
Episode 2-2018
Episode 3-2020
Complete edition- 2021

Honestly, would you rather just wait 6 years for the whole thing? I sure wouldn't. It'd be the whole last guardian all over again.
