Final Fantasy VII Remake is a multi-part series

This is why of all the reimagined looks Cloud has gotten over the years since the original game, I actually like his recently revealed design for Smash Bros. the best. It's the most cartoony and stylistically different from every other iteration's interpretation of Advent Children's look. FFVII was a very anime game - possibly the most anime of all the mainline FF entries - and had very anime character designs to go alone with it, so why not embrace that? /unpopularopinion

BTW, I think Smash has the best redesigns of characters from outside the Nintendo franchises. Pac-Man, Sonic, Cloud... they all look absolutely top shelf, as if someone was concerned with getting them right. Impressive stuff.

Well I guess that speeds up the release date. As long as the parts are substantial in their own right. It could make for an epic trilogy. I know it sounds horrible on paper, but if they're serious about making each part its own story then this could be really cool.

I dunno, if this "filler crap" is me being able to explore more detailed, fleshed out versions of locations in FFVII's world (+ possibly other added, fun gameplay content like new optional boss fights and such + not totally horrible new story content), I'd think that would be cool. I'd really like it if something like Midgar was actually explorable and not just some small areas connected by loading screens that the game pushes me through. Let me talk to more people (or hear them talk), see more areas of the city, actually interact with it more etc. That way the remake has something more to offer than the original game, even if it takes some stuff like a world map & airships away.
We are talking about 3 (possible more) games. How do you want to turn a 50 hour game into a 150 hour game? 100 ADDITIONAL hours without any meaningful main story progress can't be NOT botched up by filler crap and busywork.

I'd care more if I didn't already beat the original like 4 times. At this point I'm going in to really re-experience it again (but with tweaked-as-fuck graphics and voice acting).

While I think the decision could aptly be considered bullshit by many people, and while I am NOT saying that this is a good move or endorsing their business decision....

I must say that doing it episodic will make it more acceptable to a person like me, and I would be more inclined to play it because of it.

I don't hate this.

It's like the entire Japanese video game industry suffers from chromic mismanagement.

Think about it for a second. You want FF7 remake to be faithfully recreated with nothing cut. The amount of money and time that will take is just too great.

Look at FFXV. Things got cut, and it's been in the pipeline for like a decade. No one wants that situation again.

This is probably how a project like this gets greenlit if you want everything to remain the same.

Witcher 3 has an impressive amount of variety, explorable buildings, numerous cities large and small, and a completely hand crafted overworld with numerous unique areas and environments, yes. Also horses and vehicles. And a card game minigame.

And few reused assets?

Not sure about that... Ubi/Activision aren't in the 60-hour long game business. :p

Yeah, "greenlit with no issues" is probably pushing it, but the point is that Ubisoft, who craps out an AC game every year like fucking clockwork, would be able to tell you exactly how much time and money it would take them to do the FFVII remake as a single game, and also have a decent idea of what would have to be done to make it profitable. Squeenix really doesn't, so they have to play it safe.

Are people saying "Square can't take the risk to make a full game" for real?

Final Fantasy 7 is the single one most popular JRPG period. This shit will make ten times over the price to make it. If square can't pony up the production cost, then they might as well just stop making AAAs right here right now.

It's seriously insane.

It's their most beloved game, and ace in the hole. There's absolutely nothing else they can produce that'd warrant more resources from them. This is it. This is the game you go all out on. If it's not this, it's nothing.

Okay here's the real question while everyone is still in full panic mode. FF7 is linear in terms of progression for quite awhile but when you get the airship it does open up. So the question really should be "can you access older content" in terms of towns and areas. If yes this is fine, it just means we are getting parts of the game early rather then waiting 11 years for a demo that lasted an hour. I don't need a 1 to 1 but holy shit I do need an open world.

Best way to handle it if you have to do this, realistically.
ep1 All the way to clouds story, ends you with a bang and it feels like a cliffhanger even in the original.

ep2 obviously end of disc 1, big moment and the game has still been linear

ep3 Now this is where we get tricky, either we finish the game or if we have to have 4 parts lets go to where the monsters begin to attack. Big events hit, mood is all time high, but for the love of god you better be able to travel to places from the previous episodes.

ep4 again if needed you just finish the game here, although still i think 3 parts makes the most sense here.

Now again we are all emotional, but before we call death to the game lets at least hear their plan out. There's no reason after all the episodes are done they couldn't release a physical complete edition, but the one thing they can't fucking do is make this a linear story where you can pick it up any episode. It just doesn't work!

You honestly think FF15 has a better global appeal than 7? Then why are they actually making that a full game and not the other?
Final Fantasy it's not the household name that it was once and the market for JRPG in the west it's not as big as you may think it is...

Well... atleast this means we can't joke about the game being released in 2020.
We are going to joke about the release date of the final chapter, ala HL Ep 3

Square has a habit of torturing the fans around PSX lately.

There's a masochistic part of me that's kind of amused by this.

Just saw the thread and here's my two cent: for me at least it's not too surprising. Let's not forget that :

1) Kitase said doing a remake would take too much time and effort if it was to recreate the WHOLE world of FFVII with today's technology AND open-world tendencies. So if the original story scenario of FFVII is told in multiple part WHILE being a gigantic world in real-time, then for them to recoup the cost of development and to not get lost in development hell, they have to release them in parts;

2) They are never shy of making multiples entries in a series (FFVII compilation, FFXIII trilogy) and they even considered of making FFXV a whole new series of games before Tabata stepped in decided otherwise (he clearly said the whole story will be told in one game).

So, of course like everyone else I'm a bit disappointed. But in way, I understand that. Still, if it's really the same basic scenrio thold in multiple part, there is always the chance that the can put even more stuff in it! Imagine being able to explore the ENTIRETY of Midgar in just part 1? Now THAT would be surprising.

I'm cautiously optimistic..I don't feel the need to stamp my feet and call them assholes, because regardless of what they do..I'll be getting this day 1, even if episode 1 is mediocre, I'll be getting episode 2 day 1. I'll likely hate myself after every purchase, but every episode will be day 1.

I'm an unabashed FFVII fanboy.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Just 10h ago. Imagine that.

I think the episodic format heavily implies that this will be a highlight reel with a smaller scope than the original. It makes sense too, as that will make it cheap to produce and assure it's out on time.

There is no way it's a full remake cut up in parts. The logistics of it just don't make sense. The way progression, exploration and other stuff works in FF7 just doesn't lend itself to the episodic format. Would the last episode suddenly piece the whole overworld together and allow backtracking? It also doesn't make sense with the comment about each episode providing a 'unique experience'.

I really hope Square Enix will clarify soon.

I think that S-E will be done with overdrawn, extremely expensive development cycles after FF15 if they can help it. What do Japanese developers who get stuck in these 5+ year development periods on AAA titles have to show for their efforts?

Then they shouldn't do it at all. Or scale the project to be less ambitious.

Good point, probably. But if we count the cost and dev time of Luminous it's probably a lot closer than you think.

Yea, but a lot of that is SE probably trying to salvage the project. Do I think SE would approve of FF15 if the budget was the entire collective budget of FFXIII-Versus up until FFXV?

God no.

In an addendum of sorts: I'm one of the weirdos who loooooong ago - when I was still invested in FFVII - all I really wanted was a version of the game that had consistent character models throughout battles, towns/dungeons, and the overworld map. I never really wanted a full blow current gen graphical overhaul as a majority of the fans wanted.

I wonder if the original game had had that if people would have clamored for a remake as much as they have...

I think it's too early to tell how this episodic nature will work, or if it will be bad. Yeah, I'd like one full game to throw my money at.

Gotta drip feed that story. Leave people on the edge of their seats with each cliffhanger. Leave them wondering what comes nex- Wait-a-minute.

Prices won't be that high but I fear the idea they have in their mind is close to this ahah

Btw at this point SE must be receiving an insane amount of requests to comment on the situation.
They can't make such an announcement without giving details!
Of course fans want to know what kind of quality they can expect, what's gonna happen to the free exploration side of the game, timing of release between the parts and so on.
If they can't announce anything else today it was a total mistake to announce this today unless they want some feedback on the idea but it's obvious that people would prefer a single game unless they can bring really valid reasons.

No, this is how the project gets greenlit if you want it to be made at all.

Well yea but imagine if this was one release. You don't think things would be cut? Or it wouldn't take ages to come out or cost a substantial amount of money?

SE is also a business out to make money. Like I said. It depends on how this is implemented. The parts need to be substantial and literally NOTHING can be cut. Exploration needs to be there, world map needs to be there, Side quests need to be there.

It also hopefully lets the team focus more. SE gets revenue and hopefully we get this sooner rather than later.

Before you guys go crazy, it's so they can release parts of it quicker.

For people that know just how good this game is, that's going to be the worst possible kind of torture, but I already feel like I've gotten the best of this game. A new generation remake is just icing on the cake. I just pray they get everything right. This is my favorite game of all time and I want them to do it justice.
