I wish I knew where to get a hold of these. I've looked into them before, but it's a run around to find copies online, even though they definitely look like it'd be worth it
They are easy to find just check any of the big torrent sites

Harmy announced recently that an early workprint version of his ROTJ 2.0 will be available the day before TFA. Final version to be released later.

I've got his current versions all burned onto bluray disks in custom printed cases and disk art. However I have to redo the one for the original, for some reason there is a slight hiccup during this one Tarkin scene that is not present in the actual file. Must not have burned right.

Sucks because that means I have to reprint the custom disk art and 1. my printer is broken, 2. I dont remember where I put my leftover disk stickers and 3. I forgot the whole file conversion to bluray format process, learning it for this was the only time I ever did it.

Man. The return of the jedi special edition is borderline unmatchable.

The jabba palace song
The ruined sarlac pit.
Burp humor.

Why lucas why??

Burp humor?

Just watched the Special Edition version of the first two movies, just on normal DVD. It's been years since I've seen them, and the only thing that really bothered me was the Jabba scene in IV. It looks godawful, not to mention ruining the mystery of who and what Jabba is so early in the series and in such a lame way. The only other thing that bothered me were some random CG monsters in the background, looked out of place. The one that fills the screen for a few seconds is particularly obnoxious.

If you decide to go through with it, post the instructions here on the conversion process so others will have it and you'll have a record in case you forget again =)

Burp humor?

I got blurays too and bought the recent steelbook releases just to put these in.

I would like to have Blu-Rays of the Despecialized Editions, but I don't have a Blu-Ray burner, a printer good enough to print the labels and case covers, or skills to burn them.

Looking at my installed programs to find what I used. I think what I did was use tsMuxerGUI to get the file into the bluray file structure (folder, rather than ISO), then ImgBurn to burn it to disc.

I remember I needed some specific settings changes in ImgBurn to get the disc to play in my ps3. I changed the UDF revision. I don't remember what I changed it to, though. I wonder if I could put one of my existing discs in to read how it was burned. udf 2.5 maybe? Or was it 1.5?

I'm getting close to figuring out the details!

I was tempted to do this but I dont want to spend the money and I'm fairly happy with the ones I have now! But I support the idea. Even harmy bought the steelbooks for display purposes.

I retested my first disc and could not find the spot with the error. Played fine every time I ran through the scene. Confusing! It happened twice when I watched through the movie before. I guess I'll hold off on reburning it for now, but I thought I'd still write down the directions.

1. Open your file in tsMuxerGUI
2. Select the Bluray folder option
3. Select your destination folder
4. Hit Start Muxing, it will generate two folders in time

When complete, open ImgBurn

1. Select Burn Folders/Files to Disc
2. Under Source, select Browse for a Folder, add both your BDMV and your CERTIFICATE folders that were created by tsmuxer. I had to do each individually, selecting both at the same time didnt add them for some reason.
3. Select your bluray burner drive under Destination
4. Go to Options, make sure its set to UDF, select revision 2.50
5. Go to Labels and under UDF put what you want the disc name to be
6. Under Device>Settings>Write Speed select 1x (it will take a long ass time but its suggested to avoid errors)
7. Hit the burn button

Here are my cases and discs:

The covers I got online from a nice guy, though before printing I made some tweaks to them myself. Made the text more readable for Empire and changed Luke's saber to green on Jedi, among other tiny things.

The first disc image only required some content aware squeezing to get to fit properly in circular proportions. Empire is the one I had to work on. I combined four different images to make that Hoth Luke image. And ROTJ I combined a couple different sources of the same image to result in one final high resolution version.

The workprint is out already. I'm waiting for the final version which I'm hoping has an isolated score just like the first two do (1.0 of RotJ doesn't).

My harmys are 720p and thats the best I could find. As far as I know that is how he releases. However the files are 20gb large and super high bitrate so they still look good. It's the best youre going to get the originals. It's that or the blurays.

Oh shit. I signed up on the link he gave us to get notified, but the notification never came. Ill get on that.

that was surprisingly entertaining to look up in terms of how much effort this all takes. I might actually bother to watch these versions some day. (but that's going to be a decade or so from now because I've got my fill of Star Wars already)

Personally, I would like to see THX1138 despecialized too, but that's kind of pushing it. There is only two changes in it that really need to re-removed and restored.

Ive seen a 1080p despecialized version of A New Hope.

I don't think you have unless it's not from Harmy.

Aren't the latest versions (2.5) in 1080p? I have to check my copy again...

No definitely 720p. He's even gone on record as why he does 720p and not 1080p and I believe the reasoning was because of the discrepancy of the various sources he needs to use in order to put this together. While the Blu Ray sources are of course 1080, some of the lower quality sources would stand out more if he did it at 1080p. 720 is the best middle ground.

He did a much better job integrating digital upgrades to THX. The shell-dwellers didn't work exactly like he wanted, but a lot of stuff added to that film worked really well in a way that didn't call attention to themselves like "HEY! I'M A CHANGE!" but did enhance the feelings he was trying to evoke.

That said - I'd love the original version in a quality better than Laserdisc.

Dammit. I'm mildly interested in seeing Lucas's other non Star Wars films, and of course he would go and change them from the original.

oh, the changes to THX are quite harmless in comparison, probably because he had full control over it at the time, and knew what he was doing with it. It's also a character actor's movie, so there's not that much to fuck with.

I think American Graffiti has been the only one to escape unscathed.
edit: I wouldn't know whether it actually has though, since I haven't seen it.

Nah, there's at least one digital matte used in American Graffiti. Been awhile since I watched it, though. Maybe the change got reverted for the blu-ray?

Maybe it was the old partly despecialized edition? I know for sure I have seen a 1080p despecialized cut. It was 23GB or so, bigger than the latest releases.

I love the Despecialized Editions, I can't watch any other versions of the films.

Just finished all 3 (the just released working print for Jedi, which was fabulous) and they were a awesome.

I watched these with the wife the other day. The people who did this did an incredible job all things considered.

Hopefully one day SW fans will get a proper release with all the bells ans whistles - similar to the recent Jaws blu ray whicch is incredible - in the meantime, this is the way to go.

For someone who has never seen the films, what is the difference between the bluray releases and these 'despecialised' editions?

Are the new blurays that bad? I saw a New Hope on bluray and it didn't seem that bad but if the despecialised ESB and ROTJ are better then I guess I'll have to watch those. Where can I find them?

The blu-rays have gone through several restorations and revisions, many of which replaced award-winning practical special effects with half-baked CG. The despecialized editions are an attempt to present the movies as they were originally shown in theaters.

You should watch this making of for the original Star Wars despecialized edition: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHfLX_TMduY

If you're not hung up on the originals the blu-rays are fine. The ROTJ blu-ray does have some real dumb shit in it though.

I hate all of the changes, but the most dumbfounding thing about the blu-rays is the magenta tinting. I mean, what the hell is the logic behind that?

I finally burned all 3 of the AVCHD releases of these to Dual Layer DVD's, which play on PS3/PS4 just fine in bluray format at 720p. watching them with all my friends along with the prequel Blurays in anticipation for the Force Awakens. :')

I'm doing a Star Wars rewatch to get ready for Episode VII this week. I finished the Prequel Trilogy last night. Tonight, I'm going to start the Original Trilogy. I'm going to watch the Despecialized Editions. I've had them for a couple years, but this will be the first time I've watched them.
