Carrie Fisher strikes back at critic who told her to quit or be judged on her looks

And it's not like she was the only one, so singling her out for it is ridiculous.

The only two people in the main cast that seemed to give a shit were Hamill and McDiarmid in that movie. Which is probably why the only part of that movie that really works from an acting standpoint is the throne room scene.

Wait, is the general consensus that Fisher didn't look good in The Force Awakens? I think she looked great. She wasn't in the movie for too long but I really liked her scenes and lines.

Her looks are fine and believable for a character of that age, she doesn't need to be MILF status at this point.

Her acting on the other hand is a bit wooden(I don't know if this is a botox thing, but she was borderline espressionless), and her voice sounds like she has smoked 3 packs a day for the last 3 decades.

Ian Mcdiarmid deserves credit for being the only consistently great thing in the prequels.

If every scene had him in it, they would almost be worth watching.

She hasn't really acted at all (much less acted as Leia) in the last 20 some-odd years.

her voice sounds like that because she was a smoker for decades. Still is, I think (vaping now, though) It's probably also why her mouth has that puckered downturned look to it that people can't quite put their finger on as to why her face looks "weird" to them (she's constantly pouting her lips in photos and such in an effort to counteract it, I think).

Basically, smoking may make you look cool when you're young, but it's going to murder your looks the longer you do it.

He went full ham in episode 3 but he was definitely one of the few offering some entertainment value.

How George Lucas managed to absolutely neuter the likes of Natalie Portman, Samuel L Jackson, Ewan McGregor, etc is absolutely beyond me.

I actually was distracted by her face during the movie.

She did not look bad but it looked like she overdosed on botox injections before they started filming. It didn't look like half of the muscles in her face could move properly.

I would have rather seen her wrinkles instead of that.

I'm almost 100% certain they cg touched up her face.

I think so too which is fucking crazy considering she looks fantastic as is.

I'm also convinced it's a huge reason why some people think her scenes are weird.

It's amazing they let Han have all the wrinkles he wants but go out of their way to smooth out Leia as much as possible. Heaven forbid if a survivor of a war that never really ended for her got to look like she's been through some shit.

The only two people in the main cast that seemed to give a shit were Hamill and McDiarmid in that movie. Which is probably why the only part of that movie that really works from an acting standpoint is the throne room scene.

Yeah for all the shit Fisher gets, Ford is just as bad if not worse in RotJ

...

And who gives a shit if her fame from Star Wars helped launch her writing career? Of course it did -- but that's what you do with jobs. You use one to leverage into another.

Does this argument really hold water, though? Maybe she doesn't get the material for Postcards from the Edge without being a famous actor who's the daughter of a famous actor, but I doubt Mike Nichols would have used her screenplay if it was anything but good--and I'm sure her Star Wars persona generated a heavy dose of scepticism, like if 2016 era J-Law or Scarlett Johansson approached Ang Lee with the screenplay for his next movie.

My issue with her in the film was her acting, it was absolutely awful and distracted me in any scene she was in. She looks great for her age but not many characters are reprised 30 years later by the same actor so it is a bit weird when you have an image so burned into your mind of what she looked like and then have her pop up decades later, having succumbed to the natural process of aging.

I think it was the script's fault. Absolutely none of her dialogue had any of the spunky personality of Leia from the old movies. Of course she's a fully grown woman who is a general now, so she's not gonna call anyone a walking carpet, but the script gave her no personality beyond "vaguely worried mother". I was expecting a headstrong, witty general.

It would be nice to see her rip into somebody in the next movie. The character does need some swagger, I'll agree on that.

Given what she had to work with, she did fine.

Leia and Han should have cut from TFA. Leia because she did nothing and Han because he did too much.

I think the topic stems from Fisher publicly taking issue with having to get into shape for her role in the first place.

I find it kind of hard to comment on her thoughts without knowing any of the specifics in the first place. Whether it was if the nature of her role in the story actually required it for some reason other than just being superficial (I haven't seen the movie yet), or if it was about stuff like required plastic surgery rather than just getting fit in general, etc.

Yea. It's a bit odd seeing the writing shift for her character into worried mama back home, considering her character was always in the forefront fighting with the rest of them and a major risk taker. They needed to give her something else to do than stand there and be concerned, or at least bring back the spitfire sass she had (just toned down a bit due to the 30 years gap). The closest we got was when she ribbed Han a few times in a row about the Death Star and just don't do anything lol

So we dont live in a world where actresses (and singers) are put on the screen for their looks first and then given a chance to prove they cant act? Thats the harsh reality when it comes to actresses, its very hard to make it without looks being a big part of your package. There are very few famous actresses that resemble the average woman body wise and and in looks. Can i not enter the numerous Star Wars threads on this site and see plenty of posts commenting on Daisy's cuteness and how her innocent face is a breath of fresh air as far as heroines go? Princess Leia is a character and her character is expected to look a certain way. Carrie Fisher and Princess Leia are not one and the same, if she wants to continue playing that character she has to look the part.

Everyone is jumping on the critic for just blatantly speaking a truth that people dont want to accept. When someones looks are spoken about in a positive way concerning a role nobody has a problem, but if someone says they dont have the right look then the shit storm occurs.

Did you feel similarly about Harrison Ford? Because the way the move featured Han Solo, really put his age into focus, more than Leia's.

Also, I'm excited to see what Mark Hamill's acting is going to be like in the next couple of movies. His acting in the original movies was awful, but some of this is attributable to Lucas' writing and maybe his youth. I've heard that Hamill is an amazing voice actor now, so maybe he's really improved.

Hoping he's doing loads of fight choreography. I want an epic light saber duel out of him.

god no, he needs to be the gruff old man who says insightful things and maybe does some cool force stuff once or twice

lucas tried giving the wise master action scenes in the prequels with yoda, it's stupid and doesn't work because it undermines what that type of character is supposed to be about

I loved Yoda's fight scenes though...

Tell me you've watched Batman: The Animated series and this is just sarcasm

Her acting was really dull to be honest. I expect the spank and wittyness, but she was left in the corner with a few words.

Carrie Fisher is so fantastically quirky in real life -- the fact that she was relatively "level" in TFA shows that she still has some chops... and to be frank, her scenes were both expectation heavy on the part of the fans, and exposition heavy in terms of servicing the story. She did fine, in my opinion, and while I'm sure she was a bit nervous, I expect she'll feel more comfortable in the next film.

As for how she looks? I agree with her. People can get fucked. She clearly worked her ass off to get into shape for the film.

And attacking her ability as a writer is just desperate straw-clutching.

Sorry. I've just overheard pieces of him doing Joker in the Arkham Knight video game. I had heard that people like him as the Joker, but maybe his performance is more controversial than I realized. That only makes me more curious to see what his acting will be like in the next films.

Honestly, Luke Skywalker is the character I love to hate, so if its awful, that would just make some awful part of me really pleased.

It's not a controversial performance. It's beloved, and borders on definitive (threatened only, perhaps, by Ledger).

She's better looking than most models in my view.

Carrie Fisher was a stunner back in the day, too.

Yeah she was. Amazing. And who criticizes a 60 year old woman's looks i mean seriously. Pretty damn low. But I do agree dealing with shitheads and scum bags is part of being a public figure so the guy is correct in that.

I thought she looked perfectly fine in the movie. What was not fine, however, was her acting. She sucks the life completely out of each and every scene she is in.

she singlehandedly knocked the quality of acting in the movie down a tier. they're going to need a leia-free fan edit to fix this.
