Cut it with that 60 FPS crap. We now have ways to register inputs almost as fast as 60 on 30, if it's not an action game there is no way to tell them apart with modern techniques.

Also, "smooth animation yummy yum yum" yeah cool. The backgrounds are animated at a much lower framerate. They are not generated in 3D.

Forcing 60 FPS would ruin the game entirely since the characters would behave much faster than the world they are in.

So NO, this game should not be 60 fps for the sake of being 60 fps.

Eh, it would not ruin it. Personally I don't care about 30/60 fps that much, but battles are full 3D and if they could make them 60fps that is nice.

Weird question about the PSX version, but I remember the framerate during battles being pretty choppy, but summons animations felt like they were waaay smoother than the rest of the game. Am I misremembering or was this actually true?

Some games at the time used FMVs for their animations to compensate for the low GPU power. That would be consistent with what you are describing, but I never played FFIX.

Except when it actually breaks games like Valkyria Chronicles PC until it was patched.

You mean made the game better right?
Honestly, I kinda wish they left that as an option. Pre-patched VC was just the right amount of difficulty, and it was a huge nerf to Scouts.

The summons weren't FMVs in FFIX. Like the other PSX games, it only had FMVs for cutscenes.

Yeah when you summon Ark its noticeable that the framerate increases.

Would love a PS4 release with trophy support. Never finished it yonks back.

Had that problem with a lot of games back then

So that would prompt a revisit

They were real time for sure. I'm trying to study vids on youtube but it's not a great way to tell and I don't know if it's playing on the hardware or emulator.

Oh I know they're real time (the enemy monsters are part of the animation) but the framerate wasn't locked, at least not for Ark. I never summoned anything else.

The only thing stranger than seeing people debating the merits of higher fps in a goddamn Final Fantasy IX thread is seeing people say it would be actively worse with a higher framerate.

...

I'd like to go back to being sad about this port not using the hi-res background art. ):

You know what? Low framerate on menus really suck, they feel so bad. I hope the 15 FPS limit on battles is only for the character animations and not the menus.

Is there a business reason why this is not coming to PS4 and Xbox One? Just weird to me.

Have always wanted to re-visit this game, and increased battle speed would be a welcome change.

No port begging, folks..
Many have been banned already.

Stop. Spreading. This. Lie.

Valkyria Chronicles at 60FPS was never broken.

There's a difference between not working as intended and game-breaking.

Valkyria Chronicles at 60FPS wasn't working as intended in a few meaningful ways, three of the big ones of which were patched, with the fourth (tanks going up ramp) semi-fixed.

You can tell that they put a lot of work into the character animations for battle but the low framerate really makes some of them look bad, especially since they animated a lot of actions with flourishes and spinning and such.

So unbelievably hyped for this. SE has been on a roll with the great decisions lately. The PC mod support could be incredible. Also just got a Nimbus controller and tv 4, which this is like the perfect fit for.

The "why would you play this with a keyboard+mouse or touchscreen" argument is hilarious. As if iOS and Windows controllers don't exist (and are often better/more configurable than console controllers)

Just out of curiosity are the 15fps battles in previous PC versions of the PS1 games something people modded out?

I could see it being a weird case of just being how it was made and not something fixable. Like it was early days of real time 3d animation. Maybe 15 frames was all they made. lol

They are and there are mods for it (at least for VII).

Yeah, the summons would run better in certain cases. I think it was purely because they stopped rendering everything except the full screen summon animation. Madeen you could especially tell it was rendering faster.

In FF7, the animation timing is directly tied to framerate (shortsighted programming); but with there being cases of 9 having a variable framerate in battle, hopefully that increases the chances they'll raise it up higher.

long loading times and the sluggishness of the battle system can be irritating, but it isn't nearly as bad as some people like to pretend. I finished the game on PS1 2 times and I wasn't screaming in agony while doing so.

If you played the PAL version you'd agree with us.

It ran at 50hz, but squares way of dealing with 50hz was just to slow the whole game down (not skip frames)
it made acquiring the ultimate weapon IMPOSSIBLE. (not exaggerating) and the battle system was even slower than the NTSC.

You're thinking of World of Balance Terra. I admit she is quite flawed in personality during the first half of the game. But in World of Ruins, I felt that she has grown into something else. A selfless, mature woman who dedicated the rest of her life taking care for group of young orphans, and fight for them in order to give them future, despite her identity that makes her inconvenient around human beings.

Great character. Strong female character done right, without being physically aggressive. *cough*Lightning*cough*

You're thinking of Hanging Edge Lightning. I admit she is quite angry and aloof in personality during that part of the game. But later on, I felt that she has grown into something else. A selfless, mature woman who takes care of hope and apologizes to snow , and she fights alongside them in order to give them future, despite the loss of her only sister and her hopeless future as a branded L'cie and enemy of state.

EDIT: Never mind, my post was about hoping to see this come to Kindle, but then I realized that it could be perceived as port begging and thought better of it. I'm stoked it's coming to PC though!

If the prerendered back grounds dont end up looking that much better, I might just stick with the PS1 version. Battle speed never bothered me.

Well, I just went through the trailer a few times on my fifty inch television set, and they've definitely did a little work on the backgrounds. Don't get me wrong, you can tell that the backgrounds were originally rendered at sub HD resolutions, but they look vastly cleaner then the original PSX backgrounds, which were heavily compressed to fit on the consoles system memory.

Also they're clearly using less compressed copies of the CG cutscenes, and are probably filtering it a bit for the upscaling as well. You can still tell that the video wasn't built for HD, but it looks pretty decent despite that.

SE should give us a date and open the pre-orders as soon as possible, or we riot.

For smartphone releases Square-Enix has been announcing them about 2 months before release. You probably won't have to wait long.

Looking forward to it. Glad it is getting more love than 7 got. They probably just put virtual buttons on the release of 7 because they knew fans of 7 would buy it anyway.

I've just realised now with this announcement, XII is the only numbered FF game without an emulated (so I'm excluding the PSN and Wiiware (V and VI) versions of V-IX) download version.

I - PSP and Mobile
II - PSP and Mobile
III - PSP, PC and Mobile
IV - PSP, PC and Mobile
V - PC and Mobile
VI - PC and Mobile
VII - PC, Mobile and PS4
VIII - PC
IX - PC and Mobile
X - PS3, PSV, PS4 (and leaked to be PC)
XI - PC
XIII - PC
XIV - PC, PS3 and PS4
XV - Will get PS4 and XB1 digital versions.

50 Hz Tidus in PAL FFX looked like he was constantly walking underwater or on the surface of the moon.

This times 10,000. When I played the HD version for the first time it was so surreal to see Tidus actually running around at a normal pace.

I just got wind of this. FF9 has to be my favorite FF game, I love it over any other that I've played.

It will soon be time for Quina to feast again!

hopefully it will never happen and SE will put up the International Zodiac Job System instead. lol

What is so bad about the PAL FF games? Is there a comparison?

....and how about the PSN re-releases, do they carry the same problems?
