Strategic Butt Coverings - Tropes vs Women in Video Games

I remember seeing quite a few complaints about the lack Geralt butt. That would have certainly been fitting in the game.

But...I like butts.

Not sure I see the problem here. Art imitates (and sometimes exaggerates) life. On a daily basis, I see far more women than men wearing tight/form-fitting clothing. Praise God for yoga pants.

Like youtube comments are worth seeing anyways.

There are at least some instances of them going to interesting places.

Girls wear yoga pants because they are comfortable, not because they want to show off their butts.

what?

The SFV situation is so, so strange. The producer or whomever said that he removed the butt slap for accessibility reasons and so as not to estrange women but then all of those costumes are a million times worse than that animation.

It tells you what was obvious from the start - that rationale was a lie or misdirection :p

This. It's like people never go outside. Ever see a man wearing anything close to yoga pants? Probably, but it sure isn't the norm. I can out anywhere and see women wearing form fitting clothes daily.

Good video with a lot of good points, but in real life there are more women's clothing that emphasize the butt much more than their male counterparts.

I guess that's a problem with the fashion industry itself.

Life is Strange is a bad example because she's in high school, if they did sexualize her it would be gross and illegal
It wouldn't be strange or illegal at all. There are tons of sexualized high schoolers in the media and especially games. LiS just wanted to show a more normal student which is good.

Life is easier when you don't let every single little thing offend you. But obviously that won't pay the bills.

I advise that anyone offended by over-sexualized butts to vote with their wallet.

that's probably because it's not male butts you're focusing on. trust me, there's plenty of form fitting pants on men too.

Also, atleast Max is 18, they emphasize that several times early on.

Glad it squashes the notion of more male sexualisation being the solution. While more male sexualisation would be cool as more diversity is always good we also need more of a balance when it comes to female sexualisation.

solid video yet again.

Aw... I was kind of bummed (har har) that she took that view. #Freethemalebutt

Still interesting video as usual.

Compression shorts alone can account for the difference. The problem is that the range of flattering and form-fitting men's clothes doesn't get the same sort of focus in media, especially games.

I remember she brought this up in a talk I saw of hers a while ago, and it honestly blew my mind how I never noticed this sort of thing. I definitely understood this in cutscenes, but it never occurred to me that the camera as it's being controlled can do the same thing. It's all about what it's framing, and what it allows to be framed.

I'm definitely not saying there isn't exceptions. The point is that male fashion generally does not put emphasis on ass, where as female fashion does. Games tend to exaggerate real life, so that's what we get.

Isn't she in college?

Anyway, like most of these videos they raise good points in a silly way. Lines like "Lara Crofts butt is at the centre of the screen" are just odd when, in actual fact, Lara Croft is at the centre of the screen, so where else would her butt be? I's sure there is a focus on Lara's body in that game but it's an odd way to portray the idea. Seems to overlook the fact that women are simply built different to men too.

Then on the other hand, you have that fucking absurd Catwoman footage, and (some of) the stuff about men's butts being covered and there's obviously an effort by developers towards this end.

I guess I find these videos kind of scattershot. She takes aim at everyone without really considering games on a case-by-case basis, which is a shame because she clearly has good points to make.

You're right, I see men wearing capes and robes and tattered loincloths on the daily.

It's hard to disagree with most of what's being said here.

But... I mean, if I'm playing as Catwoman in the Arkham games, you better believe I'm ogling that butt. I'm drinking deep, swishing the camera around and watching it wiggle. I'll be going up against the walls and use the boundaries of where the camera can pass through to create fresh, new angles to admire it from and be mesmerised.

this was me with Geralt's HairWorks beard

I'm feeling like it would be maybe... more timely, to use examples at least more recent than the mid-late 90s. Modern Lara, even the pre-reboot CD one, was at least somewhat less fetishy than the PSone games, even if the design in most cases is still based on the original one.

That and, while it makes a point, there are some games in there designed specifically for things like this and to be exaggerated like Lollipop Chainsaw, X-Blades, etc. It can still make the case but it's also meant to be a lot more obvious and blatant than "subversive" like just using camera angles and some well-placed boxart.

I'm with some others here though, I never thought Jade's butt was terribly prominent on the BGE cover, and certainly wasn't ever in the game. Hell, that particular piece of cover art was used in PAL regions, not the US, so most of us didn't even see it until later.

There are lots of examples because the point is to show the prevalence of it. Disagreeing with one or two examples doesn't change the message.

People always end up nitpicking specific examples from her videos when the reality is there are plenty of examples that could have been included instead.

You should probably watch with sound before commenting. It's a counterexample.

Yes. I thought about that, and added the edit just for that very reason. I couldn't quite tell what was going on because the captions were poorly written. I put the edit in to cover my butt, so to speak.

Great video. The men's bottoms being intentionally covered was not something I'd ever noticed before, but the part where she tried in vain to get a look at Batman's bum actually made me laugh. The contrast between all those waist-high angles, cloth flaps and long jackets with the womens' super wedgies and highly exaggerated hip sways was impossible to ignore.

I especially appreciate that she brought up the framing and animation as factors, because this really puts to bed a number of counter-arguments that male characters are sexualised too just because they have muscle definition and some of them have skimpy outfits.
