Anyone else feeling physically sick from the Witness?

Oh god :(

I'm extremely susceptible to motion sickness, so if people who typically never experience it are getting it... then I'm fucked. Which fucking sucks because the impressions I've been reading have been awesome. I wanted to give it a play through this weekend :(

Edit: Yup, looking at Giant Bomb's Quick Look - I can tell it'd slay my stomach after about 30 seconds of footage.

Douchebag. Yes, me.
Never once got sick from an FPS on either console or on PC, and I've played hundreds.

This makes me very nauseous. I adjusted the FOV on PC as well, didn't help.

Playing on my 40" TV.

Very bizarre. What is this game doing that no other first person game has ever done?

I definitely felt slightly queasy while playing. My gf had to stop watching me and go do something else.

I think it's the speed of movement and of the camera. This game actually doesn't have analog walk/run: you move at the same speed regardless of stick tilt. In most games you have the ability to ease off on the stick to give yourself a break which I tend to employ intuitively without thinking about it; not in this one. And there's no camera sensitivity adjustment, but the one speed it moves at really whips the camera around when you turn.

It's interesting that people reacted so strongly to Unfinished Swan, huh. I personally had issues with the first chapter, but for me it was more that the inability to erase any of the ink you shot made it really hard to tell what anything you put too much ink on was, and for some reason this become actively stressful to me.

Played a few hours on the PS4 and so far I've been fine.

On the other hand I couldn't play The Unfinished Swan for over 20 minutes continuously without feeling sick, which was a real shame because I love that game.

I just realised that I got that free as PS4 game since I bought the PS3 game. I don't think I'll try again though lol.

Subliminal sickness Simulator?

Sounds really odd, it's not like that fainting sickness that went round some time ago? Some sort of psychosomatic thing?

Honestly, I looked at this thread last night after playing The Witness for the first time, about 60 minutes, and I thought: "Man, these guys are really screwed up, must be some medical problem!" But of course, I would not write something like that, no point in provoking and ridiculing people.
I never ever, gaming for a long time had any sort of problems with any game of any genre. So I thought that all those people have some health issues.

Then I started again this morning, about 30 minutes ago. I am writing this now because I am flat on my back on the bed, I feel like puking. It started slowly, a bit of a stomach tingling, and within 5-10 minutes I felt like I'm sailing on a series of tsunamis. First time I feel sick like this...I've been down for about 10 minutes, and I'm still ill.

I had a mild case of this after playing for about an hour, less an acute nausea and more a feeling of wanting to lie down. I guess I would describe it as a slight headache? And then I realized the last game that really made me feel that way was Singularity. So yeah, my money's on motion sickness due to low FOV.

I'm on PC, by the way.

EDIT: That Steam community post also says the default vertical FOV is 54. I don't mess around with FOV enough to know for sure, but that does seem low.
It's not really that low at all though, it's about 85 degree horizontal when you play at 1080p.

I know that feeling. I never felt sick playing any game and after playing this game for two hours I had to go to my bed and stay there. At first I thought it was food poisoning or something because seriously, I never got sick playing... but alas, it seems like it was this game :(

I will try again tonight (in a couple hours) and see how it goes this time. I will reduce my projector screen to a smaller size so hopefully that helps a bit... maybe.

I got slightly nauseous playing it.
I still can't put my finger on what causes this in games. People say it's FOV but I don't think that's what it is all the time. i think sometimes even with a scalable FOV, it can still be nausea inducing.

It's motion sickness. It's also fairly common. Here's an article about it. Things like altering the field of view or stable frame rates can help. Some games don't bother me but most first person games are immediately nauseating to me.

Never had this issue but I'm interested to play it now solely to see if I will lol. Is the game at all like Myst? Not too big on puzzle games outside of that and Portal.

Yeah - I'm affected too. The second sessions lasted a tad longer but after 1 hour I had to exit the game. I will try adjusting the FOV today and limiting the FPS to 30

Yeah, I know that.

It's just weird that it's affecting so many people, I know games have affected people in the past, but I can't remember seeing such an unprecedented level of people reporting it!

I watched the GB QL and then after I felt sick. Didn't chalk it up to motion sickness until now. I haven't gotten motion sickness from a game in years, but this must have been it. And I just bought the game... Ruh oh.

Hopefully it gets patched on PS4. I may try to play it and see if it's different when I'm actually controlling it.

I was fine after watching the GB quick look but what struck me was how much judder there was when panning. I just put it down to being a crappy youtube video.

They need to add an option so you can turn on or off a cursor reticle, I bet that would fix it for most people

No problem for me, but for the most part I don't get motion sickness (I did a lot as a kid, oddly, and then it just... stopped).

If anything, it's a high FOV that puts me off. Not because it makes me feel ill, but because it looks - to me - a bit weird.

I imagine that it's probably a combination of factors leading to this game being particularly nauseating compared to most others: FOV + lack of cursor reticle + extremely bright and contrasting colours (visual overload!) + head bobbing/swaying + extremely jerky/rapid camera movement, all adding together.

How does one go about doing that with this game? Is there a string to put in the local.variables file?

I believe Blow said he was going to patch one in on Twitter.

Colors in the game are intense and vibrant. I can see that causing some eye strain which could be another factor.

Lowering brightness and contrast, and sitting a comfortable distance from the screen might help (I sit ~3 meters away from my 47" TV, for example).

Played for 2 hrs last night and didn't experience any discomfort (thank goodness). Hope they patch this up somehow because I can't imagine solving some of the more tasking puzzles with a headache.

The only slight problem I have is the slow initial movement speed of the character, which makes it feel like I'm controlling a boat.
I use WASD and I'm used to almost instant top speed on the PC.

No troubles with it on PS4. I play on a monitor mostly, and while playing I thought to myself, oh, this has a nice wide FOV for console <3.

I wonder how many people only started feeling it when they found out about this.

Lol it's not like can you induce the feeling at will. It's excruciating (for me at least) PHYSICAL pain. Like, dude, I was spread out on my couch begging for mercy...hoping I didn't vomit. I'll never forget that shit. But again, I haven't played the Witness so idk if it'd have that effect on me. But I definitely can relate to those experiencing it.

Any fix yet? Anyone found good FOV settings that don't ruin puzzles? Or should I try to lock FPS?

You actually can induce feelings like simulation sickness at will, including physical pain.

I've had motion sickness from playing a few games. Tomb Raider 2013 was especially bad. I recommend anyone who feels like the room is spinning go out and get some ginger candy and suck on it while you play. It helps a lot. Also if you do get used to it the symptoms will alleviate over time.

I get this with Valve games. :/ I was really looking forward to this and will buy it regardless; hoping its not too bad.

I tried out the Witness this afternoon and enjoyed it, but felt oddly queasy afterwards. Chopped it up to what I had for lunch, until a lot of people in the official Witness thread mentioned the same thing- nausea, dizzyness, etc.

It's weird because I never get sick with games, so this is kind of crazy to me. Since there's a ton of activity in the OT about puzzle solutions I thought I'd break it out into a new thread and ask...has anyone gotten a little queasy from the Witness? Some are saying its the FOV, the lack of a center cursor, etc. Gonna try it again tomorrow on an empty stomach. :p

edit: on PS4 here.

Apologies if suggested already, but try standing a game box right beside the TV when you're playing the game. I used the same trick (successfully) when Half-Life Episodes gave me motion sickness due to the narrow FoV. The PC versions of HL (bar HL2) were the same, but at least on those you could increase the FoV.

Nah I thankfully never get motion sickness with FPS no matter how narrow the FOV. Sucks if you do I'm sure. Hopefully they'll patch in ability to tweak FOV to your liking.

Wait, what does that do?

This is roughly how every first-person (and some third-person) games (without measures against motion sickness) are for me.

Currently running the game at 78 vertical FOV (around 110 horizontal FOV) right now, and while it is better it is still pretty bad. I didn't notice any major (motion) blur or head bobbing, but hopefully some sort of toggleable point in the center of the screen to focus on will be added.

Lack of a reticule plus narrow FOV and people sitting at the 'wrong' distance would do it. Mirror's Edge included an optional reticule to mitigate motion sickness.

Low fov is terrible. Shit give me a headache. Games dont get me sick, but going outside makes me sick now. God I hate life.

Wow, the amount of people ITT citing nausea after playing. I thought it would be a "one or two people per page" sort of thing, but no, it's pretty much endemic.

Shit, I hope they manage to patch this somehow. Slower FPS, wider FOV, centre-screen cursor?

Did any critics experience this?

How did it not get picked up in QA?

What's happening?

Can't believe this got me too. I usually never have problems. After an hour of play I felt like making myself comfortable by the toilet and here I was thinking it was just my dinner.

Yeah, this got me real bad too, completed the seafront bit, got to the desert and could feel it real bad. I need to get further from the screen or need a crosshair to focus on I think.

More like "difficult to Witness"....

Seriously though, I'm amazed at how many people are citing this. May be fucked up bad if so many people are having problems.

I'll wait for improvement reports from FOV adjustments before purchasing. Thanks for the heads-up, OP.
