Time for stupid questions again.

-Why do Koei even bother with XBone versions? Surely it must be a loss?
-Has there ever been a case of an intentional shortage in games shipped?

Why? This is SE we are talking about, they really don't have any clue how to handle most of their franchise (look at Hitman)

I wonder if DQB is a big success (which it will be) on Vita, SE will start making RPGs for it and not so much on NX (since it's an unproven handheld)

SQEX does whatever they want to do, this doesn´t necessarily mean that it´s actually a best case scenario to their bottom line. They already made a move towards more PSV support around 2014 and we are currently seeing the first results. About DQBs hypothetical big success on PSV, what do you consider as big success anyway?

In Japan they already had million sellers on 3DS and the upcoming DQJ3 will most likely sell considerably more than DQB all versions combined, let alone just the PSV version. So I disagree that sales alone are a good argument to logically explain their decisions. The upcoming "Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna" also isn´t exactly dominating any pre-order charts yet, just to point out another recent project that follows this idea.

I think it´s not really surprising that Level5 has been more successful in the dedicated videogame market in Japan this gen, and quite more successful at establishing strong new IPs.

Fairly impressive in-store displays started appearing a week or two back, and there's already a big Minecraft audience on the Vita, so this makes sense. The videos they were showing in stores made it look pretty cool, and this is coming from a guy who's never cared about MInecraft.
Idgaf about Minecraft but I'm excited for DQB.

XP-39C²
Odin Sphere ended overshipped in the end.
Unless the game completely falls off a cliff from now, i dont think it should be that big of a problem. Theres about 5.6k Vita copies left and about 11k PS4 copies, going by Media Create. Not sure about the PS3 version, but probably about 3k-4k copies left (15.1k shipment).

seeing how people are impressed by DQB after playing it, maybe it will have long legs despite the weak Pre-Order Numbers?

I mean the Demo had its effect

Looks like Rise of Mana is shutting down it's service in March...

Announcement
Square Enix are also shutting down Shissou, Yankee Damashii and Mugen Knights on March 31.

I thought it was a success...? The way how SQEX is handling both the Mana and the SaGa franchise is quite worrying.
Adventures of Mana (Final Fantasy Adventure) and Romancing SaGa 2 are being remade for Vita and smartphones, plus Vita is getting SaGa Scarlet Grace too.

Rise of Mana was largely a failure since launch. They've used it for monetization experiments over the years, but I'm guessing with their wave of success they're not interested in that anymore.

What would you have preferred Square Enix to do?

A more serious effort in developing and promoting games from these two franchises. A third remake of FF Gaiden just signals the lowest-minimum effort SQEX could have taken - same for SaGa, the PSV game was announced one year and basically disappeared since then.

Saga has always been an eccentric pet project. Mana Square has had no clue what to do with at least since 2000.

Square Enix has become notoriously cheap on all but their flagship games since Matsuda took over.

He even listed Setsuna as the standard of what they are willing to invest in a new IP going forward, and that game looks ultra cheap.

It had a successful first two years, an ok middle two, and a disappointing last two. It will end up being a mixed success.

The risk though is that what we're seeing isn't so much a failure on Nintendo's part to maintain interest, in which case they could do better next time around, but the results of a market shrinking more every year, in which case there isn't much they can do. If the NX bombs in the West, hopefully we can seek refuge in the Media Create threads.

I do think the West is the worry. The software performence of the 3DS there in recent years has been resembling that of the Vita in Japan. 4.6 Million units but we have just one game, sold at a discount, which is hitting a 20% attach rate. The 3DS has 12 million units in the US but its top-selling 2015 game was well under 1 million. Things like Yokai were under 200K. That is a lot of people who simply left the market. It would be surprising if they are going to be there day one for NX.

Ironically it is the WiiU, especially in Japan which seems to have the most active owner base in terms of core software, but that is mitigated by the fact that we are talking about titles we can count on one hand. A lot of people seem to be either buying multiple versions of the same handhelds or to have zoned out.

At least they managed to release some main entry and interesting experiment back then. It's like Capcom developing Breath of Fire 6.

Legend I think with hindsight was decent despite it not being the SD3 sequel everyone wanted. Sword was at least an effort to create a linear Legend and merge the two lines. After that Square basically threw up their hands with Children and Heroes.

And Dawn isn't even worth mentioning lol.

Can't wait to see how Saga Scarlet Grace will look like then, following by Pennywise 250k expectation (Romancing sold 450k after all !) and 80k sales.

Dawn of Mana failed spectacularly in 2006 which resulted in years of hiatus, so I think it's understandable that they aren't willing to risk making a high budget entry just yet. SaGa series too hasn't seen a new main entry released on consoles since Unlimited SaGa in 2002. Regardless, they're both coming back so IMO it's a step towards the right direction.

BTW SaGa Scarlet Grace is scheduled to be released this year. Hopefully it won't get delayed again. The music on the official website is very nice.

Pitiful hardware sales for PS4 despite a few games coming out. It's kind of tragic how little Japan gives a shit about consoles nowadays.

I choose to look at Famitsu's tracking for PS4 to make things slightly less gloomy.

| PS4 | 24.825 | 26.658 | 11.513 | 160.365 | 77.092 | 2.291.098 |

2016 YTD more than doubling 2015's so far.

I am heavily suspecting that this is the PSV version as I've not heard of supply problems for the other two on my grapevine.

Of course it could also be regional differences.
PS4 and PS3 versions are sold out at nearly all Yodobashi Camera outlets, though it looks like they'll be getting new stock tomorrow.

Makes you wonder what the stock of these things was to begin with when even the PS3 version (the one I expected not to move) has sold out at some chains, it originally reported sell through being PS3>PS4>PSV, makes me believe that the shipments were in reverse-order for size.

But ya, it seems like it will vary by region, though by the end of the reporting period it may well be out of stock everywhere.

I keep forgetting this is releasing this week. It's going to sell a lot less then the previous games, isn't it?

probably a combo of smaller userbase in vita vs psp and that they just like weeks earlier announced the original games are getting vita ports so that might have dampen sales

that and it's the rhythm game where the rhythm part looks absolutely boring especially in this age where there are a whole lot more other rhythm games out there

Time for stupid questions again.

-Why do Koei even bother with XBone versions? Surely it must be a loss?

one theory is that the xbone version only exists cause koei is planning on releasing it out in the west and costs must be low enough that they can might as well release the xbone version in japan too

I'm not surprised about reports from DQB, the problem is not how much is performing during these days but how it will in the next weeks...

I'm still doubtful about its legs, the price is a problem for audience coming from Minecrat, in my opinion, and if Rakuten report is confirmed, seems like it would be Minecraft to get boost from DQB and not the opposite :D

Stock again of Builders Vita at Bic Camera. They expect today being sold out again.

Takarajima Stores talks about the new update for Gundam, and their new price at the store, 1.780yen.

Some stores at the Rakuten Ichiba re-stocked Builders, Vita version especially. PS4 version is gaining some traction from lack of Vita version.

I'm still doubtful about its legs, the price is a problem for audience coming from Minecrat, in my opinion, and if Rakuten report is confirmed, seems like it would be Minecraft to get boost from DQB and not the opposite :D

Well, according to Rakuten the Minecraft boost was the release date of Builders, yesterday sales returned to its normal. What I can expect, it's not a bump but maybe a minor decrease from usual.

It's OK Moor-Angel, you can be excited. No one will say DQB fell below expectations. I promise*.

I'd argue SE started that trend quite awhile ago. The last non major franchise release from them that felt like a SE production top to bottom was probably something like The World Ends With You.

Has there been any reports on the DQB Vita bundle sales? That was on general sale right?

Official numbers, not really. Yesterday I wrote about Sofmap having the Metal Slime Edition sold out. I think, in general terms, there were very few units, since it was limited.

I think it would be more active if Nintendo gave us more than scraps. The Wii U base seems more active because it's the one getting the important games.

Of course you could always argue that Nintendo can't do all the work and that it should have been the time for Western third parties to be making good games for it. The eShop has been getting some good stuff, but games need to be on store shelves to sell systems.

In Japan though the question for the portable NX isn't whether it's going to succeed but how big of a success it's going to be. I wish we could say the same for Western regions.

I always was skeptical about DQB success, so I dont have expectations

I'm not sure about the Minecraft comparison, just because Minecraft is at a budget price doesn't mean everything in the same genre has to be as well, especially since Minecraft is a pretty old game now. I assume DQB is just a normal price for a piece of software and though in a similar genre they are different games in a not exactly packed genre (on console at least). I think the most interesting thing builders will show is if you can have multiple successful games in that genre or if there can be only one.

As for the multiplayer thing, is that really that big on consoles in Japan? I know Splatoon has been a big success but I thought single player games still did pretty well. I'm looking forward to this one because its a single player game. In my experience local multiplayer in Minecraft is great, but online multiplayer often leads to strife and misery :)
