Tales of Symphonia Pre-load is up on Steam

Screenshot for anyone who doubts it.

Also of question is the lack of mouse support in anything, in addition to it not hiding the cursor.

Man watching that opening after all this time got me all kinds of emotional. Starry Heavens so good.

Sad to see the poor nature of the port though, really hope modders can work their magic.

Skits is not voiced in this game? Strange.

They were in Japan as far as I know, but they didn't bother in the localisation. That said, with the remaster you can choose Japanese voices so, you'll get them voiced in that.

Abyss didn't have voiced skits in the dub either.

Heh. I wonder if the budget for this got quietly slashed when they saw the pre-order numbers. Locked resolution seems like a step too far even for a low budget affair, considering Zestiria. Any copyright information or credits to see if it's Q-LOC?
Would be surprised if it's not them again, Bamco gives them everything nowadays. Budget likely was low with all the people getting it for free.

Symphonia was the first Tales game in the West where skits weren't completely removed altogether. They weren't voiced in the West until Vesperia.

Subsequent Tales games improved upon the gameplay quite a bit. Even its sequel, Dawn of The New Age, improved upon the gameplay quite a bit. That's unfortunately all it improved upon however.
I guess you can objectively call the gameplay improved; faster battles, more options, better AI etc.

But Symphonia's battles are uniquely tactical for a 3D Tales game. It's slow enough that you don't have to concentrate entirely on the fighting, and can instead look at the bigger picture to see what you should be doing next. Positioning and guarding feel more important in Symphonia; particularly because the lack of free-running could lead to you getting cornered/pincered.
The bad ally AI was a blessing because it led to more interesting battle scenarios. You couldn't trust them to hold their own, so you had to intelligently strike the enemy team in a way that would stack the odds more in your favour. It also meant micromanaging your teams strategy/artes in order to get them to do their job properly, which was perversely satisfying.

Didn't they put it up for pre-order only fairly recently?

Isthereanydeal only has it as far back as like Jan 27, so it couldn't have been that, unless you mean Zestiria numbers affected it (which seems unlikely given the new Tales game is coming to PC too).

Wonder who did the port. Considering Zestys port was pretty good, I'd be surprised if it was the same people. (then again, maybe they weren't given a huge budget for it because they didn't think it was worth it (being given away for free to all Zesty pre-orders and all))

Who knows. Still nice to have on PC and hopefully all issues are sorted soon enough (either officially like with the save thing someone posted on the other page or modders for anything else)

Really disappointed they thought it would be ok to do this after a good Zestiria port that did well on steam.

EDIT : It's already getting review bombed on steam.

This nigh-uniquely japanese phenomenon of having no clue what PCs are is somewhat odd. I know Japan is an island, but... it cannot be that isolated?

I guess since they were giving this away with preorders of Zestiria they didn't think it was worth it to do work to it.

That's supremely narrowminded thinking if true.

By doing so they've cut off the potential revenue from any who come after who are going to be scared off of buying it now.

Soooo. atfer all the fuss with Dark Souls, the poor port, the bad DRM approach and all the stuff, Bamco still believes that not relaying PC porting to a competent developer is a go?
was the budget soo low ?

Will pick it up later in the year or so ;o

I finished the GCN version not so long ago so I'll get it later on Steam.

Apparently the game doesn't like the "foreign" non English characters from all the localization included. It either displays gibberish or nothing with those characters.

Seems no on tested this.

Anyway, there's also a bug that causes opening config menu & saving take 30 seconds on Windows 7.

Gtg for now, I hope there'll be more fix and sweetfx preset this afternoon.

Can't say I am surprised at the port being garbage seeing as how they said jack shit about the title prior to its release. The frame rate and barebones options are not surprising at all but I am slightly shocked at the internal resolution being capped. FFS couldn't they get Anything right?!?

Yeah, I meant the opposite, as in there's so many people getting it for free that there's no point in spending money on it, haha. With any luck there should be at least a way to unlock the resolution by tomorrow, which should help a bit.

The huge budget required to implement arbitrary resolution support?

Yeah hopefully, I'll wait until at least resolution options are available before playing anymore. At this point it looks way worse than Dolphin and is only 30 fps which is kind of sad. Happy I at least got it with my Zestiria preorder rather than paying 20€.

Well I was gonna start replaying this now but I guess i'll just stick to finishing Tomb Raider and hopefully Bamco will have done something or others will have by then.

Then again I do have it on PS3 xD

It's a tough place to be in, I love this game, one of my favorites, and I really wanted to show support for them bringing it to PC, but 20 dollars for such a terrible port job...
Dunno if I should refund to 'send a message' :\

Well, this was always going to be worse than Zestiria's port, but man. I at least expected the resolution to actually change the internal resolution.

Inject SMAA with Sweetfx will fix the jaggies.

Well, no, the jaggies are from the poor upscaling, so it wouldn't really do much as far as I understand.
How the fuck do you do a shit port like this after Zestiria.

Unbelievable

"Hey, Bamco, how much effort did you put into this port?"
:D

I'm disappointed by what I'm hearing from the early comments. I was considering buying this since I've yet to start the PS3 version, but I guess I'll wait and see if any mods come around that let it run better.

How the hell was it possible for them to have locked internal resolution WHILE still having a resolution option that polled from available resolutions?

Say what you want about other Japanese PC ports and their lack of resolution-polling, but at least they (usually) switched render resolution to match what limited lack of resolution options were available. Not even Tecmo makes these mistakes as far as I know!

Man, it bugs me, this is a low they've not reached in over four years.

In other news, all signs point to Disgaea being a good port!

I mean, it's a port alright, but it's looking pretty lazy with how they didn't redraw some of the UI elements (right down to the damn / symbol).

Also the Symphonia port is hot garbage. Internal resolution is one thing, but the stability is what really kills it for me. Tried to play it three times. First time, I changed the resolution, went to start up the game... and the game reverted back to the stock resolution after I hit "New Game." Second time, go in and change resolution. Game locks up when I select "New Game." Third time it worked at least.

Also it's not more than 15 seconds, but the initial load is bad for a game this old re-released in 2016.

Also "Battle Contorols"

The game apparently uses "VMProtect" as DRM according to some guy on the steam forums. Never even heard of it before.
Which is why the game creates a new .exe everytime you launch the game.

What are you talking about? They completely re-did the UI.

On Symphoia, I seriously want to know how they failed to at least stay on Zestiria's level of quality. No stars, mate.

Oh my fucking god, what. Holy shit, that is ludicrously insane.

Jesus this shit is a mess. Locked internal resolution? Like... wow.

It looks better on Dolphin FFS.
