Wii U VC: Which Wii games let you play on the GamePad?

Mellahan

Concerned about dinosaur erection.
Despite originally having Classic Controller support (I believe), I was surprised to learn the VC version of Resident Evil 4 cannot be played off-TV WITH GamePad controls. I recall this being a feature for some Wii VC titles... but which ones?

It's supposed to work with every Wii game that has CC support; no-one knows why it doesn't work with RE4 and neither Nintendo nor Capcom has given an explanation either way.

I think Sin & Punishment can, but I've heard it's almost unplayable without the motion controls

I know this would require extra work on Nintendo's part, but not being able to play Punch Out Wii with just Gamepad controls is super frustrating. The Wii remote pointer is only used for selecting stuff on the menu. It would be the perfect game for me to play Off TV in bed otherwise.

I can't confirm that Sin & Punishment is playable with the GamePad downloaded from the eShop but I can definitely confirm you don't want to play it that way under any circumstance.

Yeah, that was a typo on my part

What about Xenoblade? I'm in the US, so someone in Europe would have to comment on this one

Xenoblade works.
Pandora's Tower works.
Sin & Punishment 2 works.

RE4 doesn't work because you initially NEED a Wiimote + Nunchuk to even activate the CC. And since a Wiimote+Nunchuk combo doesn't work with the Gamepad neither does this game.
It's stupid.

First, the Wii games are NOT VC, they're just digital releases of Wii games.

Second, anything which supported Classic Controller originally supports GamePad controls, with the caveat that the game can't require the use of any other controller at any point. The thing with RE4 is that apparently the European version required a Nunchuk to be plugged in to bypass the title screen. The way Gampad support works in these games is pretty hacky and can't deal with stuff like that.

Is it just the European version or is it all versions?

I read in the other thread that the lack of GamePad support for RE4 Wii on the PAL Wii U was because of how the game handled detecting the CC. Is this the case with the NA version as well?

I don't have first-hand experience with that one, but people in the Nintendo Download thread were saying that the US version wasn't affected.

They're not running via emulation, but Nintendo still considers digital Wii games as part of their VC catalog

Not really. The banner on their icons says "Wii", not "Virtual Console", they don't have "Virtual Console" in their tags like a normal VC game would, and if you filter the eShop charts to Virtual Console games, they're not included. The only stuff that has called them Virtual Console is a couple of Nintendo Download PRs.

The website brings them up when you search via the VC filter.

The individual pages for the Wii games also have the VC section on them

NoA refers to them as Virtual Console games so they don't have to bother releasing an actual Virtual Console game that week. It bothers me so much.

Does the Gamepad support on Wii games only works for eShop Wii games or if I put Xenoblade on my WiiU it will work ?
