It would be nice if Emmerich went back to using practical models and blowing the fuck out of those. If I remember correctly, a LOT of the first film was done using model work, and of the 75 million dollars the film was budgeted for, about 50 of it was for VFX. I think the White House explosion cost 2 mil alone.
I believe the first film holds some sort of record for most models blown up in a movie or something like that. I'm old now, I used to know these things.

Seriously no Will Smith is sticking out like a sore thumb. Shouldn't have gone forward without him.
Which is actually good because his son would have been in the movie.
There's only like three guys left in Hollywood who know how to build models and they're all busy working on Robot Chicken.

So Independence Day 2 will be the Destiny of movie experiences. Keep your cell phones handy so you can get all the background on all the characters blowing shit up, flying around and dropping one liners for the next two and a half hours!

This movie looks to have wicked world building. Taking advantage of the huge time gap and having earth incorporate alien tech to jump start their space and combat tech progress to hyper science fiction levels is frankly brilliant.

The website said he died during a test flight of a new craft. He probably just went missing and will show up at the end of this as a stinger to hook us for the next one. Much like Geoffrey Rush showing up at the end of POTC: Dead Man's Chest.
My theory: he was testing a new craft, then disappeared. He unknowingly ran into the new invasion fleet. They see some weird Earth/alien craft and know their initial wave lost, so they come to Earth to finish the job. So it is all Will Smith's fault this new wave has come in.

I remember that to film the overview of the wave of fire going through the city, they made a miniature of the streets, put it at an 90 degree angle and started a big fire underneath it.
I just love that I had all this neat tricks to pull of those shots.
Looks like Age of Ultron meets Inception or something.
