okay, i've got reinand running, but I'm trying to use FBI but every installation just keeps failing, I've read it can be because I haven't installed any eshop games or something but I followed all the instructions to fix that but I still am having errors.

the error is

Install failed!

Source: SOURCE_APP_BEGIN_INSTALL (0x5)
Module: MOLDULE_NN_OS (0X6)
Level: LEVEL_PERMANENT (0x1b)
Summary: SUMMARY_WRONG_ARGUMENT (0x8)
Description: <unknown> (0x2f)

Anyone know what this means?

How did you copy files to your SD card? Wirelessly or through a PC? Might have failed to copy correctly over wireless.

If it's games you've dumped yourself something might have gone wrong. Try grabbing retroarch emulators and see if those CIA files install okay.

Moving big files wireless to my n3ds feel very slow
Anyway to make it faster?
If i use faster router will it move faster?

I've got a Netgear R7000 and it's still quite slow (usually peaks at 4~5 mbps). Don't think Nintendo used the best network chip/adapter.

In my experience using the official from system settings is ~3x faster than if you've installed the .cia for it. So if you're using an installed try the default one maybe

That's still twice as fast as I get. I only get max 2.5mb/s

What are you installing and are you choosing SD or NAND as destination?

What version of FBI?
What version of ReiNand?
N3DS or O3DS?
What version software on sysNand or emuNand?

Man, I bet if I mail this bricked Majora's Mask IPS in, at best I get back a TN 10.5 console. I hope its suitable tradebait for a 9.2 (or at most 10.3) n3DSxl.

Should've settled to have just my O3DS on CFW. The damn emulators on n3DS was just too much incentive to risk it.

Cool stuff going on with TWL_FIRM!

TWL Slot-1 Launcher (First custom DSiWare app!)

There's now a flashcard unblocker for DS flashcards that didn't ever even work on the 3DS at all. It's a DSiWare homebrew app that tricks the firmware into launching Slot-1 even if it's a blacklisted card.

rxTools seems to have some new TWL patching ability in its latest nightly version, but only on o3DS at the moment. However, you CAN install a patched version of the n3DS TWL_FIRM as a cia, if you can find A: how to dump TWL_FIRM or grab it from Nintendo's servers and B: how to patch the file once you have it.

(Or you could go looking for a prepatched firmware file, but that's in a bit of a "not-so-legal area" so I can't publicly recommend that.)

Just having TWL_FIRM patched allows you to load flashcards with valid icons (e.g. ones that don't have an "acekard" or "R4" logo on the home menu), but older stuff than that needs the app.

It's interesting stuff, and a result of a bunch of people finally really digging into what they can do with DSi mode. Hell, maybe I was wrong when I said we'd never be loading DS backups off SD. Seems like the sky's the limit at this point.

EDIT: I feel I should probably mention that the cia only needs to be installed on your emuNAND with the destination NAND instead of SD. Don't, I repeat, do NOT bother putting it on sysNAND. It gives you no benefit and is just a ton of added risk.

So just to understand, since this installs to emuNAND and is built to allow DS flashcarts, does this mean that we can run DS carts in emuNAND now? I remember that being an issue in the past.

As far as I know only rxTools has that issue, other CFW's always could do that.

Ripping a 3DS cart and then installing the CIA feels like it takes forever. Now I'm just waiting for Nintendo to link my NNID from my busted 3DS to the new one so I can redownload the digital games I have.

Is it normal to only get 40fps on FF6 even on the n3DS/cia installation ? This was one of the main reason why i even downgraded from running regular 10.3 w Ironhax to sysnand/reinand setup. So far the emulator experience doesnt seem improved at all...hmm...maybe im missing something ?

Thanks for the links.

Not sure that I follow on the TinyFormat thing, though. If I'm transferring from my o3DSXL to my n3DSXL, don't I have to use the official utility to make that transfer?

You use the official tool for the transfer, TinyFormat is for unlinking your emuNAND from your sysNAND which otherwise can cause some issues, you use it instead of System Format not system transfer.

Apparently a lot of people has lost their save files with system transfer though.

Oh, I'm an idiot. I get it now. Thanks for the explanation.

I saw that about the save files over at GBAtemp. If I use the save data backup utilities, I should be fine. Not a massive loss if I lose them, but my kids may be pissed about losing our Pokemon Y save.

I noticed PocketSNES is missing the fog effect on Super Metroid title screen. I've tried CatSFC+ but it framedrops a lot. Any suggestion? I'm using the latest stable build.

The official one i installed it as CIA to enter it on home menu
If i enter it from system settings will be faster?

Yeah. Use CatSFC. Not CatSFC+.

CatSFC+ is slower.
Thanks! Super Metroid runs perfectly now. The upper part of the screen (where the HUD is) flickers a bit but oh well.
So as a general rule of thumb I should use CatSFC for every game and if doesn't work try PocketSNES, right?

Btw, happy to see you back! I mostly lurks here and there and your posts about emulation and retrogaming are always very interesting to read!

There is better save manger now, and it's in .cia version

https://gbatemp.net/threads/release-jks-savemanager-homebrew-cia-save-manager.413143/

Very easy to use.

I second this. Way nicer to be able to launch your save backup tool from the home menu and not worry about rebooting after using it.

That's correct. rxTools doesn't work with DS carts if you have reboot patches enabled (to allow the system to survive rebooting when launching things like Smash on o3DS.) ReiNand doesn't use those reboot patches, being built for n3DS, so DS games have always worked on it.

The TWL patch is just for running unsigned DSiWare code and flashcards.

haha thanks all

I guess it's like my situation at work - I've managed all this time without being fired despite being an absolute idiot from time to time. I'll just stay away from off topic here from now on.

I think you can see if someone's perma banned if you don't see their avatar anymore.

If they still have the avatar, then they're only temporary banned.

Not true, it's been proven both ways before.

Welcome back Rich! :D I wasn't in off-topic in ages myself, though mostly because one way or another you always end up reading something depressing there.

I'm currently running homebrew in firmware 9.9.0-26U (via Ironhax, o3DS XL) and was wondering how to be able to connect to the internet again to be able to get the legendaries for ORAS. I stumbled upon this guide on reddit which led me to this thread on GBAtemp, in both places the term "franken-firmware" is thrown around a lot. This all sounds very complicated and I really don't want to risk bricking the 3DS. Are these guides the easiest method to get internet access back without giving up on homebrew? Any input is much appreciated.

Question time again :)!

I made it to downgrade to 9.2 (using OoT instead of BrowserHack; worked on first try).

Then I made an NANDcopy, saved it to my PC and did the nand-installation where my SD card got wiped. So I copied everything back to the SD card.

But I found out, that I can't start the homebrew-launcher through holding L on start up.

What are my next steps? Entering again through OoT-Hax and install a custom Firmware? Had to switch through several tutorials, because there always happened something which was not described in the tutorial.

Sorry for being such a noob at 3DS modding :(.

You have to install menuhax again after downgrading to 9.2. You can use OoT or browserhax to do this. Once you have menuhax installed again you can use L at boot to start the homebrew launcher and from there you can use whatever guide to install your choice of cfw.

Dear friends I have a brand new Japanese n3ds. I purchased it due to the reason that it was not coming to NA.

It is on 8.1

How do I go about installing browserhax or menuhax.

I only have NA Cubic Ninja
NA 3dsxl on 9.2
I have Gateway

Thanks in advance.

Thank you XDDX!

This board is AWESOME!

If anyone runs into trouble installing 9.2, try the OoT. Worked like a charm on first try.

Chris
You also might want to change the settings in menuhax to always boot into CFW/homebrew unless you hold L instead of the other way around. Personal preference but I find it to be a lot more convenient and you always know you're in emunand and not sysnand because you have to make a conscious decision to boot into sysnand that way.

This, and I would also set it in menuhax where you have the basic red theme set up as your theme for SYSNAND, so there's also a visual guide letting you know not to mess with anything.

Deleting your internet connection in SYSNAND once you have everything setup couldn't hurt either.

Huh. So I have an M3DS Real, it shows up as G6Flash on 3DS. This would be a way to use it? (Emunand 10.5/ReiNAND).
Edit: Turns out it won't work for an M3DS Real. Oh well!

Use a certain retail game (eg. Zelda OoT, Shovel Knight) to update to <=10.3 and then http://smealum.github.io/3ds/

I would encourage you once there to downgrade to 9.2 and install emuNand so you are completely future proof.
