Instantly recognizable as Phi. Design looks good.
Overall the character designs are a bit more subdued than VLR, in terms of 'unique' outfits and the like. I wonder if that's to try and match the 'dark' vibe of the game (I find it harder to take someone seriously when they're wearing a top hat). It could also be because they're aiming this deliberately more at a Western audience. Or perhaps this is just indicative of different artist preference, or perhaps even Uchikoshi's preference.
I'm super, super stoked for March. At the same time though, I'm not sure if I should watch even a single shred of footage on this game...

Huh. Uchikoshi said to send Aksys a Facebook message to learn more. Will report back if I hear anything. I'm sure Aksys themselves will clarify what's going on at GDC soon (wrt ZTD).

I think it was more that people were bemoaning the loss of Nishimura, rather than the actual quality of the art, which I can definitely understand. The key art for the game looks awesome, but I'm kinda half-and-half on the grayscale designs, with half being great and the other half being kinda average, judging from what's been released.
Phi's design is easily the best of the bunch so far (1 being a close second), though, so I'm hopeful for the rest.
I don't think the art itself is grayscale. The same picture they used for Sigma/Participant 9's picture was also released in colour. I think all of these pictures have a full colour version available. They're just releasing them this way for stylistic reasons.
It is weird that Kinu Nishimura didn't see out the series though. I wonder why they're not back for 3.

It just occurred to me that participant 5 has not yet been revealed. So keeping up with boy-girl pattern, I think next up is Junpei, and I bet you he will be participant 5, just like how Akane/the look-a-like is participant 6. You all heard it right here first!

That's not exactly all that crazy. Hell, I'd be disappointed if he didn't go this route with at least one of the participants. I play this series to be mindfucked. So yes, please, give me someone who should be familiar to me and then have them work me over because they're an imposter. I welcome it! I will suspect EVERYONE!

Haha, I remember some interview that said Uchikoshi specifically told Nishimura to design Phi to resemble Santa. Maybe there'll finally be payoff to that.
