Nikkei: Nintendo ceasing Wii U production at the end of the year

So if we look at the remaining main retail Wii U games to be released...

- Star Fox Zero
- That #FE anime game that will sell 10 copies
- Mario and Sonic at the olympics
- Paper Mario Sticker Star for Wii U
- Zelda U

I guess it's ok for it's final year. Closing the generation with a Zelda game is nice!

Don't forget that Nintendo also makes shit tons of money on royalties from toys & merchandise.
I started working at a toys & collectibles distributor last year and the amount of Nintendo items is staggering. Candy's, apparel, homeware, cheap figures & expensive statues. Nintendo items are considered evergreens for us, they will always sell good numbers. Zelda is the most used search term on our website/shop, while our specialty lies in stuff from SideShow Collectibles and Funko.

Battle mode in Mario Kart games has always felt like a tacked on death match mode in a game that just didn't need it. It's hardly a loss considering how great the actual racing portion of the game is and the quality of the tracks. Mario Kart has never been better.

A lot of people here stand by the N64 version giving them the most enjoyment simply because of the battle mode even though the racing in that game is crap.

Not to mention mission mode on DS and technically Wii gave the games much needed replay value. 8 has amazing racing but thats all it has.

Confirms that Zelda is def for both systems. I mean it was a no brainer anyway but no way they'd release it on a platform that they're not at least hoping will grow.

So those that bought a Wii U, are you happy with what you got? Are you happy with the 4 year production cycle of the console?

Yeah, I'm cool. I got what I wanted out of it from a realistic perspective. I think it def had more promise than what came of it, but the second screen AND the jump to HD was too much to nintendo to handle creatively and realistically. I'm not even mentioning third parties cuz, well it's nintendo. I just would like Nintendo to make sure they actually have a plan to take advantage of whatever hardware quirk is lined up for the NX. I could care less about sales or third party support really. I have a PC for the third parties.

I can't say I'll miss it too much. I enjoyed the dozen games it had, but honestly... Let's move forward.
I remember having to choose an Xbox or a gamecube as a kind and wished I had gone with the Xbox. Or a ps2.

Wii U is certainly my last Nintendo console, so I wonder how many other people it left a bad taste with. Nintendo sure has a lot to prove if they want to release a new console.

Kinda makes sense. Mario Maker and Splatoon kinda pushed the agenda forward in Japan. Didn't make a dent in RoW though. So no shortages there. Wii U winding down.

That was a nice run

WiiU had some quality output in this console, despite being sparse. So many quality titles.
I hope the NX has backwards compatibility, I don't want these titles to fall into obscurity

Cemu save us.

It wouldn't surprise me if there was no Wii U Zelda game. That open world one might just release on NX primarily and have a version for the Wii U, kind of like how Twilight Princess was out for the GameCube in addition to the Wii.

This is my feels.

Hard to believe this will sell less than gamecube.

I don't see why they wouldn't want to get as many of their Wii U customers as possible over to NX while still giving them a healthy library on day one.

- Spend gobs of time and effort making Wii U a eco-friendly, low-power-consumption device

- Ask customers to keep their irreplaceable, unique, no-longer-being-made controllers and throw the rest of the console's components straight into the dumpster.

Besides that, it would mess with the console circle of life: no retailer on Earth will accept a Wii U console trade-in toward an NX without its GamePad, and this upgrade method is a super-common practice for early adopters and even late adopters.

The GameCube was a good bit different because even though its controller was required for playing GameCube games, they were still making GameCube controllers for years! (Also, the controllers were $25 new, not $100+.) Heck, you even buy brand new ones again now! Wii U GamePads? No way will that happen.

I can't sat I'm surprised honestly. I adore my Wii U, but I understand that it isn't a console for everyone.

It does make me wonder if NX will be backwards compatible with the Wii U though...

Technically Early 2017 is still this fiscal year

But no way they are twisting in the wind for that long and missing the holiday season to launch in Spring

You guys are crazy

NX will be this year
Of course. Even the Wii U had a really nice spike during the holidays. That's just Nintendo's time.

They need a strong launch.

To be fair the Gamepad wasnt THAT unique

They could emulate all the same features with a Tablet, smartphone, 3DS... or whatever

or have patches for the games that allow you to play them without it

The Wii U was my Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate box, and is still popular around my house for local multiplayer titles. Though I can see why it didn't take off, I'm glad I have one.

Yeah, and we already had Pokken Tournament and Twilight Princess HD. It's a decent final year, better than the Wii's last year too (granted, if Star Fox and Zelda weren't delayed, it would have been pretty poor).

Interesting. It doesn't seem like they have a lot of stock in the pipeline considering the shortages but they are still releasing high profile games so people will still be buying them. I guess if true it points at something to replace it, possibly something that can play those games as well. I guess Wii U just might go out in the most Nintendo way possible, with shortages.

Same

I ended up getting Smash, MK8 and Mario Maker as well

Could care less for the system but I loved the games

Youre talking about BC? Well they could limit it to games where the gamepad isn't used (there are more that don't than do), or the NX incorporates a screen on the controller and that handles it.

As of today, we have no reason to assume that the NX will be the second exception to the diminishing console-over-console sales rule that Nintendo has been subject to.
I assume you're taking the Wii out because that played by no rules.

It's true though that every home console from Nintendo not called the Wii has sold consistently less than the one before. I thought they hit rock bottom with the GC but I was dead wrong.

I've had plenty of fun with the Wii U.. totally okay with moving on now.

I just hope the NX competes favorably with the Xbox One 2 / PS4.5. I wonder how nervous Nintendo is about that development.

Wait there is a XBox one 2 rumor link?

I saw the PS4.5 thread

I thought it was a decent console considering the zero third party support. You can still get 100 hours easily out of games like Mario Maker, Splatoon, and Xenoblade, and first party support was great. It was still missing Metroid, and the 3D Mario didn't reach Galaxy/Mario 64 levels, but let's hope Zelda U knocks it out of the park.

So those that bought a Wii U, are you happy with what you got? Are you happy with the 4 year production cycle of the console?

It wasn't good at all in the first years, but I bought a Wii U a few months ago and the library is just shy of amazing imo.
They have good variety in their line up and the Nintendo games have a polish that most other games just don't have anymore (it also helps that almost every Nintendo exclusive is 60fps).

If the NX has BC and a solution for the gamepad problem, I will buy it no matter what. A game like Mario 3D world will still be amazing in 5 years.
