God Of War 4 art leaks (Norse setting, Kratos w/ beard) [Up2: Polygon says real]

Which part of God of War 4 are you most excited about?

The story of Kratos ended as much as they want to continue it. The character has changed so much from what he initially was that the series is almost comical at this point.

Plus how does this even work? Kratos is a character in Greek mythology.

I would have preferred a new character for the Norse setting, but this isn't a big deal. It's a video game, and Greek/Norse mythology is fiction. The devs probably made a reasonable business assumption that 99% of the market won't care...they just want more Kratos and a new GoW.

I don't think it is "fake", but it is far from confirmed. It was an intern artist a couple years ago right? He could be just doing some ideas for a concept they once had or a cancelled project. Seems premature to assume this is what it is from one intern/freelance dude.

Not a couple of years ago. He was there in mid 2015.

If it is true I really hope they give him a good reason to go after Norse Gods. I mean, it made sense why he did what he did to the Greek Gods that abandoned and cursed him but why would he need to go for Odin.

I love Norse and Greek mythology. In some ways I am excited and in other ways I am worried.

So its still unknown how all this disappeared off the face of the Earth right? Like did Sony threaten legal action and they deleted everything themselves or what?

Cause it doesn't appear they were hacked right? I mean everything was just flat out scorched earth

I love Kratos, he fits these games and I enjoy playing as him. I want to rip the intestines out of a minotaur and his intensity helps amplify that sensation while I'm playing. He is angry all the time, and that's why I like him.

These games don't need a super deep main character. I don't find him annoying in the slightest.

"the story of Kratos ended"
*GoW3 has a cliffhanger ending*

:p

Anyone else getting a vibe from the concept art that they're going to shift the game in a more "Zelda-esque" direction? Kind of like Darksiders I suppose, except with the more grandiose, epic scale we know and love from prior God of War titles. More emphasis on puzzle solving, a variety of tools/gadgets to navigate through the environment when paths are blocked, etc.

It may just be a bit of wishful thinking on my part, but I'd enjoy that out of a new God of War.

The Norse setting immediately intrigues me, but Kratos again? He is such an unlikeable character.

That said I look forward to seeing Norse Gods, the Nine Realms and Ragnarok realised on the PS4.

I would too. Past God of War games have had some pretty fantastic puzzles but they were few and far between. I'd love one that puts more emphasis on that.

I always had the feeling of action-adventures like Zelda playing GoW, especially with GoW 3 and Ascension.

kratos killing all the gods caused some instability between pantheons and the cosmos, so when thor and the midgard serpent go at it causing ragnarok.

somehow kratos falls through a rift and ends up in the middle of the battle effectively, stopping ragnarok when he beheads thor and the midgard serpent while losing his blades in the epic process

and that's how they are going to introduce kratos in the norse myth

i wonder if you are going to wear some kind of armor and while i think wielding thor's hammer is gonna be cool i would prefer if you dual wield some epic axes instead

That sounds like the exact opposite direction they should be going. This should be an action game first and foremost. Light navigation puzzles are to be expected but they should really focus on their bread and butters before trying to turn this into Zelda with tits and gore. The core action gameplay in the series has been solid but unremarkable since day one, that's what they need to focus on.

I would love if this is the direction they were headed. They should still focus on brutal combat and epic set pieces but adding some Zelda type exploration to the mix would be pretty amazing. Idk i just feel like they need to do something to shake up the formula besides just a setting change. They need some fresh mechanics as well.

Some of this art looks absolutely beautiful with respect to these designs. Really excited to see how this pans out.

I remember an interview with Stig Asmussen in which he talked about a chat that he had with Daivd Jaffe. This was right after the release of GOW 3. He menitioned that they did throw around ideas for a time after the greek gods and what they could do to give the series a fresh start.

Here's a translated quote from a german PS3-Magazin called PS3M:
The egyptian gods could be really bad ass [...] but the norse mythology could be the right fit. Ist's brutal, it's full of fantastic and otherworldly and gigantic locations. Imagine Kratos taking on Thor, Loki and Odin ... that would be crazy.

Here's similar quote:

"What we talked with Daivd Jaffe was as follows: after destroying all the Greek mythology, Norse mythology is right there. We do not know if this will really happen, but it is an idea, "he said. Can you imagine? Kratos against Thor and Odin? At least interesting.

I don't know about you but I wanna mash O to cut down Yggdrasil. Maybe that's why Kratos has that lumberjack look going on?

It's funny how people dismiss Kratos because of his huge beard. It's almost like people had skipped playing Ghost of Sparta. SPOILERS:
Deimos was buried by Kratos and the Grave Digger.

I could see something Kratos travelling the world hidden in some kind of long robe. Hiding himself from all thee gods... as he tries to fix in the new world the errors of his past mistakes.

Could be awesome...assuming they dont make "Kratos" a homicidal mass murdering sociopath with the personality of self righteous serial killer.

Or, you know, justified, revenge seeking ex-family man anti hero.

Seriously, one of gamings worst characters.
The plot of revenge seeking murdering anti-heroes can be found in some of the best games ever made.

Kratos is one of them.
