LTTP Shantae and the Pirate's Curse - Man that 3d effect so good

Playing this game like many of you probably due to the Humble Nintendo Bundle. Playing through it on my 3ds and man this game.

I've never been a Shantae person, and I didn't own a GBC back in the day. That being said I did pick up the GBC on VC on the 3ds due to liking these types of games. It was decent, but it didn't WOW me. I had an inkling though that all of my gripes were probably fixed in the newer versions.

Fast forward to Pirate's Curse which I downloaded on my 3ds yesterday. Man this game is soo good. The 3d effect is fucking fantastic. Shantae controls much faster and more fluid now compared to the original GBC game. I also like the use of the bottom screen for the map, items, and collectable.

Music is nice, spire work and animations are solid, and the game play is cool. I also think some of the environment stuff is really neat to look at.

I guess if I had one gripe its that so far the upgrades haven't really been there. I bought the stronger and the faster hair whip, but I haven't gotten any major Metroid like power ups yet. I'm still early in the game though.

Also the 3d looking soooo good makes it a crime against humanity we didn't get a good Iga Castlevania game on the system.

PS: Here are some static images I posted on Miiverse, but they don't do the game full justice without the 3d effect.

You just convinced me to play it on 3DS, even though I had already downloaded on the Wii U. Let's see if it's really worth it.

I like everything about how this game plays. A lot. As a guy who has platformers as one of his favorite genres, and who's often disappointed in how many BAD platformers come out, I really enjoy the gameplay

Which makes it a shame that the character designs really bother me. Like, make it hard for me to keep going bother me

2D planes are the easiest way too show the effects of the 3D effect, but Shantae was kinda messed up. I usually have it on, but turned it off for this game. There's several objects and more importantly platforms that don't belong on the 3D field they are in.

The 3d is in this game is really fantastic but the gratuitous booby 3d is a bit much. I don't really see the need to hyper sexualize a lot of the female characters especially when the game has such a light hearted approach.

I played this and Risky's revenge on my ps4 for the first time.

Amazing games. I'm obsessed with Shantae now and the next one is probably my most anticipated game.

Yeah, you must be still really early in the game if that's your main complaint. There are plenty of upgrades that give you additional movement options, and you can even combine a fair few of them together to traverse insane distances. It's also worth using your consumeable items (e.g. pike ball) if you want more offensive options

I've been so happy with this game! It plays a lot like Symphony of the Night and has a crazy good Jake Kaufman soundtrack. The 3D was good enough to make this a 3DS playthrough for me, too. I picked up both versions on that Humble Bundle.

It's called fanservice. Some people think fanservice only happens in anime games, and they would be wrong. Anyway, the game is great.

If you have a 3DS I would suggest checking out Shantae on Game Boy Color as it's the original Shantae!

Game was very fun. Wish 1/2 Genie Hero would come the fuck out already.

Pirate's Curse was fall 2014. 1/2 Genie Hero is on target for this fall. 2 years from the release of the last game is pretty great. Especially considering the new art style/High Quality sprite work and many more supporter platforms. Don't get the complaint.

I guess it feels like it should have come out by now sometimes, but there hasn't been any real reason for that except maybe a fulfillment date that inevitably gets missed as a project scales up.

Meanwhile, I'm realizing it could well hit before MN9 at this rate. Though I guess the Kickstarters weren't THAT far apart?

I really like how the 3D looks, but other than that nothing about it wows me. It's pretty meh so far as far as Metroidvania games go.

i think its great, especially the tight controls and unique enemy behaviours. btw this barely qualifies as a metroidvania, no?

I have a 3DS and I have seen the trailer. It looked slow and kind of primitive. I thought I wouldn't enjoy it after having played the recent games...

The game in 3DS is just perfect. On Wii U it felt weird with the HD portraits and stuff. But there's something around the lo-res look in 3DS and the added 3D effect that just makes it perfect.

The game was fun the first time through, but in New Game +
Pirate Mode
it became brilliant. The mobility and speed at which you can cross the map is astounding, and some of the possible sequence breaks that it opens are quite fun to exploit. Definitely the most fun I had with a Shantae game, and one of the better indie Metroidvanias.

Those were my complaints. That and the character sprite is huge for the size of the screen.

New entry is sooo much better. I def wouldn't fault you for not being able to go back.

I think the point with the series is to have a cast of great, cute women. And the sexuality is certainly tongue firmly in cheek and it compliments the humor. I honestly like it.

Complaining about fanservice in a Wayforward game is kind of like complaining about fanservice in a Senran Kagura game, it's pretty much a staple since the beginning.

Also Pirate's Curse is an amazing game and it's really cool to see WF get full reign with Shantae and not have to worry about the limitations that held back the previous two entries.

Yeah I bought this on a whim when it came out on Wii U a couple of Christmases ago, and it was actually my favorite game from that whole period. A ton of fun all the way through. I went back and played the prequels and, though still good, they pale in comparison.

Yeah. The original is impressive for a GBC game and still holds up quite well, but, well, it's a GBC game. And Risky's Revenge almost feels like a prologue of sorts. It's as if there should be more to it and then there just isn't.

Pirate's Curse is full on amazing though, and yeah, it looks great on the 3DS with the 3D turned all the way up. I wish there were more 2D pixel-style games on the 3DS that took advantage of the 3D. Shovel Knight does it as well and it looks awesome.

You should look into the Mutant Mudds games. It's actually better to play them in 3D because of how much the game plays around with plane shifting, making it easier to understand hazards.

Y'all making it sound like I made a mistake giving away the 3ds version and keeping the wiiu one. I'm only on the 3rd area of this but the game feels pretty fun.

The 3D effect is pretty great. Definitely makes me feel that I made the right choice in playing the 3DS version.

Now I know which version of Shovel Knight to get whenever I finally get around to playing it.

This game is definitely more of a proper Metroid-like than a Metroidvania, though I'm sure some purists would take offense to the whole level select thing.

It's pretty fun! It has some crazy difficulty spikes that they spring up on you out of nowhere, but it's got some good fundamentals and the more humorous approach to the design of everything helps it stand out from the crowd.

Like riskys revenge before it, I find the game to be enjoyable, but nothing spectacular. Fun little game that I think could be a lot greater.

Still probably good on the Wii U, but I'm happy I chose the 3ds.

To be fair the backgrounds are a little more elaborate for this over say Shovel Knight so the 3d effect is more pronounced.

I played it on console, so I didn't see the 3D effect. This was just recently, too, and it was my introduction to Shantae.

Man, it was great.

Game itself was fucking amazing. If they can one up this with the reboot we have a great game on our hands.
