Hail to the KING baby
David Shoemaker has a pod about McGregor's retirement with Ariel Helwani

More excited about this than the Simmons pod. :D Always thought MMA was so perfect for Simbo's analysis but he could never get past seeing that Baroni fight live and the "brutality" of MMA (that fight was just a flash KO, maybe one extra shot, wtf) so instead we were stuck with occasional appearances by Jay Glazer. :/

So Helwani was fantastic. Wish he'd get his own pod on Ringer, teamed up maybe with another interesting personality. Shoemaker not so much. I remembered that I didn't enjoy him or his partner on their old pod even though I mostly like his writing. Just really amateur podcast style and then he barely knew anything about MMA. The latter, whatever, but Helwani really carried the show.

new hires:

Rob Harvilla from Deadspin
Alyssa Bereznak from Yahoo (Tech)
Michael Baumann from Baseball Prospectus
Claire McNear from SB Nation
Matt Borcas

Anyone else not able to hear Mallory on the new draft podcast on channel 33?

Obviously I can't listen if I can't hear one of the two people. Is it just me?

Oh I know. I like the two of them separately but together they turn into those two annoying dudes we all know.

Especially when it comes it to Game of Thrones

It just feels weird to have two guys who haven't read the books and who actively dislike book readers being the leaders on the response to GOT

Also, the Kings are going to lose, which makes me happy, almost more than if a boston team won because of his bandwagoning on the kings

1600 is so good. Feel like it should be its own pod and promoted way more. Totally agree on Ryan and Greenwald being fine individually but terrible together. Worst pod on the network and really the only even bad one imo.

Simmons homerism basically got me back into hockey, cheering for the Sharks.

Not a bad thing, but Faverau and greenwald are very similar to me (and ryan and pfeiffer are similar as well)

It's actually funny, I think it was sean fennessey that said he didn't like when podcasters said "i just tweeted this but"

when greenwald and shoemaker do this ALL the time

So I am in the minority on liking Chris & Andy together? Love Hollywood Prospectus and The Watch.

I'm a huge fan of Chris and Andy together. Also, Chris should do a five-minute rant whenever a Philly team does something stupid. Loved his take on the Eagle's trade in the NFL podcast.

I like them talking about Game of Thrones. The show stands on it own and doesn't need the crutch of the books to analyse it. If it isn't on the screen it doesn't matter.

It is like expecting film critics to prattle on about Tom Bombadil when they reviewed the LotR movies.

Plus the books are done, over, forgotten and will never be. So ignoring the unfinished works of Gurm is probably for the best

I'm excited for ATT regardless. WTT was a great production and always a highlight of my week. Should be interesting to see how they adapt to the new format.

It's weird that 1600 doesn't have a sponsor yet.

Bill Simmons' big HBO deal comes full circle this summer. The pay cable net announced Tuesday that his new series has both a title (Any Given Wednesday With Bill Simmons) and a premiere date (June 22).

The initial 20-episode season, part of Simmons' exclusive multi-year, multi-platform agreement with HBO, kicks off a few weeks before the deal's one-year anniversary. The half-hour show will air weekly, on Wednesday nights, at 10 p.m. — simultaneously becoming available on both the HBO Go and HBO Now platforms.

“I’m excited about the show, I’m excited about the title and I’m really, really excited to drop my first F-bomb on TV,” said Simmons in a statement. “We are going to figure out nudity down the road, as long as it’s tasteful.”

Any Given Wednesday is the name of Bill's show on HBO. Premieres June 22nd.

I hope this doesn't mean we're getting duplicate podcasts if we already subscribe to Channel 33 and The Bill Simmons Podcast.

I don't imagine so. I definitely hope they go more the route of breaking up each podcast. There's lots on C33 I like, but also enough that I don't care for and it's slightly annoying to just have it all in one feed.

I got it on mine (Android, Pocket Casts). There's also an Ep. 0 too (theme music?) so maybe that's what's messing things up.

Kind of down on After The Thrones. I love Andy and Chris and am devout to the podcast, but they're not particularly good on TV, the clips/flashiness distract from the talk, and I have a feeling that they're not going to be particularly critical of the show, as I feel they've done a good job on that in the past. I'll probably still check it out from time to time.

That's my biggest worry, there's no way they can be critical if this is being shown on HBO

I feel like this will be the general reaction to Bill Simmons on HBO

These guys just don't translate to TV well unfortunately

I don't think most of the Ringer/Grantland people do unfortunately. Aside from maybe Mallory and Jacoby has kind of grown into it too imo. It's really weird that The Ringer led with After the Thrones for their video content. Kind of reminds me of how the first segment on Simmons new podcast was an ad for MeUndies...like at least try to start strong? That said I don't watch GoT and I know it has insane and mostly unreasonable fans so w/e. I actually don't like the ATT guys much at all, but they're not nearly that bad. Problem is there's no way that type of style is what nearly any GOT fan wanted (at least the 99% of people unfamiliar with Ringer/Grantland). They probably expect more some sort of deep dive by GoT scholars instead of a couple Brooklynites pontificating about random stuff.

We'll see how Any Given Wednesday fares. I have tempered expectations. Actually think Ringer would be really well served having a woman-led panel show about sports and pop culture. Simmons is always looking to fill some void, and I think it's right there. Rubin has really proven herself both in pods and even in the ATT reviews she's called out as a bright spot.

I'm sure Katie Nolan would love that. She's already (jokingly?) peeved that Simmons' comic sports show is airing the same night as her comedic sports show, but if it was also hosted by a woman with a way bigger budget than her show? Ouch.

Ha! Yeah I don't know why they chose Wed. in general tbh. Maybe it's just a weak TV night? Don't follow this stuff too closely. Nolan...she's an OK guest but way too much of a bro/Tosh vibe from her and her show.

I wonder how Jacko is handling things right now.

also, after catching ATT, Chris looks nothing like I would have expected.

The clips are a terrible idea. We just watched the episode. We don't need to see a clip of what we just watched.

ATT takes all of the disadvantages and none of the advantages of being on HBO. Why no cast interviews? A Kit interview after what happened Sunday would have been awesome. Get Mal more involved as she's actually good at this TV thing. The show is just stiff and is a poor translation of what a WTT shw could have looked like.

I don't think Bill is very good on TV at all. Competent mostly, but not good. I don't think this HBO venture is going to turn out all that well, but I could be wrong.

I certainly hope it does for the sake of long form sports/entertainment journalism but I am not optimistic.
