Stellaris - Paradox Dev Studios new sci-fi grand strategy game

How complex is this game? I remember playing Galactic Civilizations 2 at a friend, but was totally overwhelmed by the complexity. Is Stellaris comparable to GC2?

Watching Arumba and Quill play has me so hyped. I've gotten pretty tired over the last year of EU4 and CK2, DLC hasn't really been the best (IMO) and the gameplay has just gotten stale. So fucking ready for Monday. When are reviews expected to come out?

Sometime on release date. Hopefully at midnight EDT like the streaming embargo. I hate that I have to work three hours Monday morning before sneaking off :(

It's been a long time since I played GC2, and I never played it very long, so I can't give you a good comparison.
This game is very complex. It's probably easier to get into than a lot of both 4X and grand strategy games, but it's still got a LOT of depth. I suggest watching some videos on YouTube if you want to see if it's too complex for you.

Micromanaging in GalCiv is a pain the ass, especially with all the stations you have to build and upgrade to boost your influence/research/minerals.

I do like the classic space UN mechanics, though.

It's probably at least as complex. But maybe more friendly in that complexity, depending on how well the information is laid out and tutorialized. An article recently went up from someone who seemingly hadn't ever played a strategy game but went to a rather complicated multiplayer Stellaris event earlier this week and emerged really enjoying it. Might be worth a read.

The grand strategy automation is what gives me great hope the late game segments of Stellaris. Where it's usually a slog of mundanities, it could become a whole new level of fun.

The whole political element is going to be awesome if lategame is like CK2 or EU4.

Great read, thanks! I think I will give the game a shot!

Had no idea this game existed until the beastcast today and after the quicklook I picked it up on gmg, now the long wait until I receive my key begins...

Man so much cool stuff has happened in just the first 7 episodes of Quill's playthrough. Why don't you release today

I keep coming to this thread in the hope that there was a screwup and the "Publish" button got pressed early... Twitch streams aren't helping the wait.

I should be going with the base edition since it's the cheapest and there's a couple of (cheap) games I'd like to pick up down the line but man, the OST previews are so good.

Man I am dying to play this game after hearing Austin talk about it. I loved EU4, but haven't played it since the vanilla release. Can't wait to dive deep into another Paradox game!

Love reading/watching impressions from the mp event.

Stellaris, the 4X grand space strategy title that I’d be playing, sounded complicated. My research also told me that Paradox, the developers behind it, were renowned for making particularity complex strategy games. Safe to say, I was scared.

[...]

Strategy game newbies like myself will probably take their first look at the game, even just the starting menus, and think Stellaris looks terrifying.

[...]

When we were told to leave the game, all I wanted to do was steal the computer in front of me and go and start Stellaris all over again. In two days this game managed to transform me from someone who didn’t care about strategy games, to someone who wants to play them all, starting with this one. To some, this might just be another fish in the genre’s ocean, but to me, Stellaris has opened my eyes to a whole new world of videogames. One day I will have a PC that runs it, and when I do, I’ll create the biggest and best empire in the galaxy, no matter how many hours it takes me to do it.

correct about everything
do any of the let's plays so far have any early encounters with empires that aren't completely useless at war? so far the military ai looks so pathetic that you would probably have to fill the galaxy with advanced empires to get any challenge.

i assume they are playing on pre-release versions, so perhaps these are the same problems that the blorg stream had and will be fixed by monday.

I've gotten the impression that early wars were made intentionally more difficult so you don't immediately get steamrolled.

but based on what i've seen, there won't be anything that can offer any challenge besides fallen empires and late game crises once you've grown enough.

it's just been my experience with strategy games that the early game is the interesting bit and the rest is cruising, so not sure how i would enjoy having to play an entire campaign before things might get interesting.

The ones I've watched so far have all fallen into very favorable sectors of the galaxy, mostly surrounded by friends. That makes it easy just to pick off one or two empires that you just know you're going to crush and snowball a bit. I wonder if they just need to kick up whatever stand in mechanic they have for AE working behind the scenes and have neighboring empires react more negatively towards your conquests.

Didn't most put their difficulty setting on normal? Maybe it'd be different if they put it a bit higher.

Enable Ironman mode and increase the difficulty to Hard or even Insane if you really want a challenge.

Yeah, I'll be quite honest that the enemy AI in Stellaris and Hearts of Iron 4 has looked pretty terrible so far.

Do you need to preorder directly through steam, to get the Creatures of the Void DLC, or is any other source suitable too, like for example:

http://www.cdkeys.com/pc/games/stellaris-pc-cd-key-steam

steam link:

http://store.steampowered.com/app/281990/

I'm not sure about CDKeys, but GMG is supposed to have all the pre-order goodies.

sorry if it's been already mentioned, but at what time it will be available?

It entirely depends on Steam, that is completely out of Paradox's hands. I would assume afternoon GMT, though.

They specifically said they would focus on making the entire game interesting, so I'm sure it will be fine. Of course, I'm sure the advanced players will find sure-fire ways to win every time, but I'm not worried.

I know it was asked at the top of the page but I don't know the game it was being compared to

Is this game closer to Civ V in complexity or more akin to other Paradox games like Crusader Kings 2?

It's starts off like Civ 4 / 5 in complexity and gameplay, and then in the end game turns into an EUIV style game. Best of both worlds!

What do you means turns into EU4?

Like in Civ, you begin the game isolated from others and mainly optimising your own affairs. Later on you achieve a level of inter-connectivity with other factions similar to all stages of a traditional Paradox grand strategy game.

The QuickLook makes this look good

but also terribly overwhelming

I actually think Austin played the opening part in a way that made it super overwhelming by keeping it on fast speed and having the AI assistant on. There was just so much happening at once and like four things talking over eachother. I think if you dialed it back to normal speed it would be much easier to follow.
