Has Activision shot themselves in the foot with the MW Remastered paywall?

This is pretty anecdotal but I talked with some friends over the weekend about Infinite Warfare, and none of them felt hyped for it at all. The conversation just kept being "I want Modern Warfare Remastered, but I don't wanna buy IW just to get it." It gives me the feeling that Activision putting MWR behind IW is a really bad decision that could potentially cost them sales. A lot of them. Shit, people could switch over to Battlefield 1 entirely because of this move.

Are you still interested in MW Remastered, or do you think it's just not worth the trouble anymore?

I'm going to buy a call of duty game for $80 like every other human being who buys a call of duty game in november

Sure the volume in people showing distress is one thing but CoD's like the fucking NBA Playoffs of videogames for some people. It's CoD. People will buy CoD.

Nope. Theyll be laughing all the way to the bank. And again in 6-12 months later when they sell MWR alone for $40.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but

It's definitely not worth it for me anymore. It's a pretty bad decision for sure.

Like a lot of people have said, an standalone version is inevitable, i'll buy it then.

Yes, it's a bad decision. I'm not paying $60 again for the same game I've bought three times(!) and has a worse value proposition than the PC release in 2007. AFAIK, CoD4:HHD won't have mods, won't have all the maps, and since there's no mods it won't be fixed.

But hey, at least it has dedicated servers right? Totally worth the $40 extra on Steam. *roll eyes*

I don't know how much the rest of you know about First Person Shooters (I'm an expert), but

FTFY.

for every one of your friends who won't buy IW to get MW Remastered, there's 100000 other people who will.

It is really a great business decision because even these not interested in IW will buy it and at the end playing it.

So guys that interested only in MWR could end liking in IW.

It's not only the $80 paywall, it's the fact that the remastered version comes with 6 less maps than the original base game. A remaster with less content, give me a break.

With BF1 looking so promising I think I'm going to wait until they see sense and release it separately.

If by "shot" you mean "deposit millions of dollars," and by "foot" you mean "their corporate bank account," then yes I agree with you.

Activision is a hugely profitable video game company that has been in this industry for decades and has innumerable resources to analyze data and determine what is going to make them the most money. I think they know what they're doing.

I think it's a pretty smart move. There will be people who'll buy IW just for the remaster. More than those that won't because of it

My brother and sister being two of them. They don't particularly care for the new one but they want that old one that looks better and plays on new consoles

Buy the package for $80, sell IW for $50. Congrats, you just paid $30 for MWR.

I think it'll cost them some sales for sure, but the outrage is relatively small considering the size of the CoD playerbase.

The average "casual" gamer does not give two shits about MW Remastered at all, let alone it being purchasable outside of a bundle.

This whole thing is pretty much a non-issue for most.

I think it may cause a glut of used copies of IW to go on the market, after people buy IW, redeem their code, and trade in the IW disc to get $40 back.

They should have just charged $40-50 for MW Remaster standalone, so the $80 package actually looks like a good deal rather than highway robbery.

Someone post the picture of the Boycott MW2 steam group where every person was playing MW2.

In a perfect world people wouldn't pay $80 solely for the remaster but the world we live in is pretty fucked so millions of people probably will.

People will buy it and Activision knows it. You'll be butthurt about it, but they'll get your money.
They're not dumb. If you're cool with annual releases and season passes, then you're susceptible to go even further with this.
This is the next step.

They'll keep pushing and pushing til they can't anymore. Then they'll back off and slowly start again.
Though who knows when that will be. Not now though.

Just like people boycotted CoD by not buying it when they dropped dedicated servers, right?

People will pay the premium price and if the new game isn't complete shit you get a bonus to your CoD4 copy.

I have a bunch of friends that buy 2 or 3 games per year at most. Those games are often a combination of CoD, Madden, FIFA, and GTA when one of those releases.

They are mostly looking at this as a scenario where they would be buying IW anyway so they are getting the remaster for a small additional cost and are excited.

Activision will do just fine, IMO.

It will still sell 10-15 million. So...Activision will be just fine. If CoD was going to suffer a backlash that would hurt the franchise terribly, it would have happened with Ghosts or something.

Fortunately, we have a product for those interested only in Modern Warfare Remastered this Fall. It's called Modern Warfare for the Xbox 360.

It's stupid of them because they could have easily just had a $40 Modern Warfare Remastered sold separate and then offered the $80 version for whomever wanted both.

Ha ha ha ha... WAIT. This is a serious question?

A serious answer, then: Of course not. The game will still be one of the 10 best-selling titles of 2016 and the angry internet (like usual) and its ONE MILLION DISLIKES will mean nothing when November comes.

But hey, people can keep wishing for CoD to go away, kind of like they wish that Adam Sandler movies would go away. It's nice to want things.

No, because the amount of people willing to pay for the bundle just for MWR will make more money than if the game was standalone.

I don't think they shot themselves in the foot at all, I think it's actually smart to be honest. It's shitty of course but at the same time it's very smart. There will obviously be tons of people that complain but when it's closer to launch the hype for it will build up. Once people get their hands on it and start spreading the word about how cool it is people will start to feed into the hype.

They're getting people to buy a remaster for $80 lol. One of the most requested remasters is happening in a series that always sells like crazy, I don't see it failing lol.

Actually, I for one am surprised they're putting MP in it at all. The Uncharted remasters dropped multiplayer as well, with "UC4 is going to have MP and it'll be out soon" probably being one of the biggest reasons (the other being disc space probably) and the CoD peeps could have easily done the same thing. "Just do the campaign, if people want to play MP they can play it in the bonus game that came with MW1 Remaster for free lol."

It makes Infinite Warfare look less interesting to me. Also, I thought it would be further set in the future judging the leaked info like I don't know with aliens and shit. It looks like Advanced Warfare but with spaceships, in space with robots. I really thought we'd be getting some Mass Effect shit here.

Mass Effect Warfare. Pick your ending.

People will find the extra $20 for it. They want IW to sell well, they don't care about selling MW1 separately yet.

Activision isn't some startup with no experience in the field. They know exactly how to make the most money they possibly could. They have terabytes of metrics and data that give them a much more accurate picture of the market than the "experts" on the internet.

IW is going to be just fine and MW Remaster will be sold standalone inevitably within a year.
