Has Activision shot themselves in the foot with the MW Remastered paywall?

It was a brilliant business move and it will absolutely pay off for them

- Those who really want both Infinite Warfare and Modern Warfare Remastered will buy the bundle at launch
- Those who kind of want Infinite Warfare but really want Modern Warfare Remastered will buy the bundle at launch
- Those who don't really care about Infinite Warfare but really want Modern Warfare Remastered will buy the bundle at launch
- Those who really don't care about Infinite Warfare but kind of want Modern Warfare Remastered will possibly wait until Modern Warfare Remastered is released separately in the future BUT they might cave and spend $80 on the bundle in November.

Basically, Activision is holding a highly desired remaster behind another game and it's going to make them a lot of money. And for the handful of people who are fine waiting for Modern Warfare Remastered to release separately....Activision still gets their cash at some point.

It seems like another one of those things that causes an exaggerated, insular firestorms but will actually have like zero tangible effect come this fall.

Enough people's desire for the remaster will overpower their "outrage" to drop the asking price. Then they'll pick up the stragglers down the line when they release a standalone version. Why would you not make the inpatient pay $80 if given the chance? I don't like the practice or have interest in COD beyond the yearly hilarious this-will-finally-be-the-end hubbub, but it's smart business.

I don't think it's a move that will hurt them all that much. They still have a lot of IW to show and the hype train will build as their marketing push kicks in and people will talk themselves into it. Activision wants their yearly revenue engine to keep humming - it's the most telling sign of success for their investors. I also don't feel like the people who play CoD religiously stray very far or spend much time outside of the franchise, much less the genre - they don't have it in them to blow off IW and wait (but that's just me).

Buy the package for $80, sell IW for $50. Congrats, you just paid $30 for MWR.

I think it'll cost them some sales for sure, but the outrage is relatively small considering the size of the CoD playerbase.

What if the remaster is loaded from the IW menu?

EA did this with the original Alice in Madness Returns.

When people are more hyped for a remastered game that came out less than 10 years ago than they are for a new game in the same series, well, maybe there are bigger issues than a marketing stunt.

For me, yes.

Originally, I was going to buy and trade in IW and keep the MWR code. After the BF1 showing, I realized I can wait for MWR to release standalone. There will be plenty to do this Fall.

Where's that screenshot of the MW2 boycott group on Steam? That's how I pretty much feel about this whole thing.

Edit: Of course it's already posted.

again IW's MP will be way more populated than Modern Warfare Remastered. MWR will be a nice little nostalgia trip for a couple of months but people those people will then move on to the new hotness.

and of course people are excited for MWR. It's known quantity. It's hailed as both one of the best campaigns and MP experiences in the series.

Also there isn't even anything inherently bad about the IW trailer. It's just internet culture. I honestly feel we go through this whole thing with COD every couple of years. Where people predict said game will be the downfall of the franchise. Yet going by Activisions latest financials that couldn't be further from the truth.

This series will continue to sell a shit ton of games and make boatload of money. COD is part of pop culture and entertainment culture. The same way Minecraft is.

Already have 2 CoD diehards who are holding out until MWR is sold separately.

Activision will feel this one. Even if it's only a bit. It will register on their Richter scale.

It's a smart move by them but they can fuck off with that shit.

Tired of futuristic CoD and I didn't like the original MW so much that I would pay $80 bucks to get through a paywall for a remaster.

I don't represent the target market, but I won't be playing MWR until I can get it separately. For me, it was one of the last truly great campaigns in the series, and it sucks for someone like me (who fell off completely around the MW2/MW3 timeframe) that I can't play it without having to purchase a game I have zero interest in.

Eh, they'll turn around in a month or so and be all like "YOU DEMANDED IT, SO HERE IT IS" and everyone will grovel at their feet.

It's going to make a shit ton of cash no matter what. There are still plenty of people out there who play Call of Duty and just Call of Duty.

Two? As in one plus one? Well shit fire Kotick now bring someone else in asap to right this sinking ship.

Lol, no.

People know they will dish out tons of money just to get a half-content version of their best game, and each year they prove the "CoD fatigue" isn't real.

Now they're going to prove that people that weren't go to buy "the new CoD" are willing to pay $80 for a gimped version of a game they released about 10 years ago.

It is really a great business decision because even these not interested in IW will buy it and at the end playing it.

So guys that interested only in MWR could end liking in IW.

I think most people who are bored with the COD series but want the remake will just sell the new game without even trying it. I'm one of those players. So on paper they will get some extra sales, but I doubt they get many new players. New game trailer looks just as uninspiring as the previous games.

Exactly. People play COD because it's COD. People get it because their friends do. They like the arcadey/twitch shooter aspect of it. Adding the zombie mode only helps.

I love GAF but this is same forum that bitches about COD literally charting every month during NPD. That alone should tell you all you need to know.

Game's still six months away from launch. Assuming they really are diehards and buy CoD every year, I bet they both cave.

Modern warfare was going to be my multiplayer game this holiday before they tied it to infinite warfare and battlefield 1 was announced. Now I'll just wait for them to release it on its own. I'm sure there will still be plenty of people who bought IW playing.

Activision has shot themselves in the foot with the MW Remastered paywall. I don't know how much the rest of you know about American culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in Japan where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in America, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the American public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase Call of Duty Future Warfare, even with the added bonus of MW Remasted, nor will they purchase any of Activision's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Activision has alienated an entire market with this move.

Activision, publicly apologize and announce Modern Warfare Remastered as a $15 downloadable title for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, or you can kiss your business goodbye.

I'm just looking at MWR as a game without an announced release date. It'll get here when it gets here. Hopefully more maps will be available by then as well.

Nope. They sell an $80 game in November and then a $30+ digital MW at a later time. Winning.

I cry for the day any business takes advice from YouTube trends.

$$$$$$$$$$$$

Activision has already confirmed it's a separate download but they'll probably require the IW disc to be in your system if you want to play the Remaster. They'll likely treat it as DLC.

Well that's stupid if you ask me. The remaster can't take up that much space, just put the zombies mode or some multiplayer features from IW out and make people download them like Uncharted is doing.

Activision is a hugely profitable video game company that has been in this industry for decades and has innumerable resources to analyze data and determine what is going to make them the most money. I think they know what they're doing.

This right here. They don't care that a few people on gaming forums are put off by their business decisions. They take into account that some of us will not be a sale and stick to their plan that will make 99.9% of their fans happy and earn them millions.

That MW2 boycott image does not communicate what people seem to think it does. There were a large portion of the group who did indeed boycott the game, but Steam sorting lists people who are in game first.

It shows 19 people in a group of 833 currently playing MW2. About 2%.

For anyone saying they'd pay full price for a MW remake, this is their chance.

I think a big issue is that MWR is piquing the interest of people who haven't been interested since MW2/3 but don't want to buy IW to play MWR.

A better question is how much would you be willing to pay for MWR if it was a standalone release?
I think anyone who says less than $40 is a bit off their rocker, considering how good it looks in comparison to the original.

The thing that makes me feel that this remaster will be useless is if only people who buy the CE to get this are the only ones playing the multiplayer in the remaster is going to be a Ghost Town.

I want to play Modern Warfare Remastered, but I'm not paying $80 for a version of a new Call of Duty game I do not want.

I will wait and hope it's released separately eventually. I'm all in for Battlefield 1 anyway.

Like others have said though, I'm probably in the minority considering how well these games always sell.

It gives off the proper message though.

People who said MW2 was "too soon" and produced one of the biggest meltdowns for a single game release made it become the best selling FPS of all-time, and both are considered masterpieces that branched off "realistic" shooters and "arcade" shooters.

A more accurate version would be the Left 4 Dead picture, however. Left 4 Dead was said to have been abandoned and people boycotted. Then, at the release of L4D2, hundreds and hundreds of people in the Steam group were found playing L4D2.

The picture highlights how the loudest "protests" always back down when push comes to shove.

is there really a demand for a CoD remaster outside of diehards? i mean, yeah, it's shitty not to have options but people who'd buy a remaster are going to get IW anyway

Same. :( Here was what I had ready to post:

Activision just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Call of Duty culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in Battlefield culture where you can become successful by being a jerkwad. If you screw someone over in Call of Duty, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the Call of Duty players, after hearing about this, are not going to want to purchase Infinite Warfare for either system, nor will they purchase any of Activision's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Activision has alienated an entire market with this move.

Activision, publicly apologize and cancel the Modern Warfare Remastered bundle for PS4/XB1 or you can kiss your business goodbye.

Not me. I have zero interest in buying current Call of Duty games.

But I would love to play a remastered CoD4.

This reminds me of that huge Modern Warfare 2 boycott campaign, and the infamous screenshot of everyone in the Steam group playing it on launch day.

Everyone and their mother will buy it.

whats your definition of a diehard? cods a whole different beast from most other games. some of those people you might normally classify as casuals...still end up buying cod every single year. so yeah i have no problem believing that they'd snatch up a remaster as well.

Watch they have it so you need to launch Modern Warfare Remastered from the Infinite Warfare menu lol or some type of way that requires the Infinite Warfare disc, that would be hilarious.

I'm aware of this. Tried Advanced Warfare because my friends did, after skipping a few games. That didn't last long. If you played this series for years, why would you find the MP interesting at this point?

I hope MW is on a separate disc or at least a download code so i can sell IW!
Bought the season pass for BLOPS III in January and i already feel i've given activision enough money for the year!
