Android |OT7| Now With a Whole New Messaging System

would it be really dumb to buy a Nexus 5X now? I would ideally want my next phone to last 3 years.

I know I read about performance issues, but maybe Android N will fix things? My Verizon contract is up next month and if I switched to Fi, even if I made monthly payments on the phone I think I'd be paying less than my monthly Verizon bill, so I could potentially even save money per month by switching to a 5X.

For 3 years? Yes really dumb.

I don't play games though. Never use the camera expect for reference stuff (photos of a receipt or where I park etc). I basically stick to the core apps (Maps, Gmail, Instagram, Hangouts, Spotify).

I guess I should just wait until the Fall. I think the 5X though has my favorite design of any phone on the market though. I hope they just keep something similar and don't make the screen larger.

Is it possible for app developers to implement messaging apps that could flip between SMS/IM like iMessage does? The thought occurred to me that while I want that kind of a service from Google I wondered why other developers of popular chat apps haven't done anything like that.

Like WhatsApp could act as an SMS app and then send their own messages if both users are using their app.

Hangouts already does this? You just need to merge the phone# contact with the Google account contact.

Interesting:

You know how when you use your phone or tablet for long periods of time, it gets a little warm? Sometimes it even goes toasty — hi, Snapdragon 810! — and app performance suffers: you start seeing lags and stutters and things don't work as smoothly or as reliably as they should. That's because the system throttles the SoC when it risks reaching its limit temperature. This is the kind of performance issues that the new Sustained Performance Mode aims to solve.

So far these are my impressions of the DP3 of N. I clean flashed after a full wipe.

  • Runs very smoothly on my N6, though the phone feels hotter.
  • Color calibration options seem to be gone. Or at least, I couldn't find them.
  • I love the ability to change DPI on the fly. I set it to smallest to maximize screen real estate. Unfortunately this breaks some things. Swiftkey for instance looks larger than it should. Some elements don't scale properly either.
  • Had one hard reboot last night.
  • Dual screen runs better than I expected.
  • There seem to be some visual quirks here and there. Wallpaper will be blank for a second after returning to the launcher.
  • Sometimes the cards will be too far apart when switching apps creating a jarring look for a second.
  • Using the volume keys while watching a video sometimes won't animate the volume slider, even though volume is being raised or lowered.
  • My Dentex youtube Downloader doesn't work.
Battery stats will sometimes glitch out and won't show usage stats.

Android apps on Chrome OS should have happened a long time ago but I'm one step closer to just using a Chromebook for everything

Too bad it's gonna take so long to release

Sounds like dirty flashing the N OTA is a legit process. Not hearing about many issues. Tempting.

Yup. My only issue on the 6p is that doze is a little too aggresive. Pixel C has 0 issues. Both just enrolled on the Beta site.
I worried about notifications with Doze 2, particularly because I'm a Wear user. I'd be interested in hearing how it goes for you.

It's no better or worse than the phone with notifications. SMS is instant as always, but if I haven't used the phone for a bit, I won't get emails for half an hour or so.

My pixel is having issues with notifications when on sleep mode. Won't give me Twitter or Gmail dunno why.

I've only had Inbox notifiations today, but they'ce been coming through fine. Spacebar to wake it up hasn't been fully reliable I've just seen, but everything else is fine.

It has a SOC that only barely outperforms 2013's Nexus 5 and absurdly slow, low quality storage. It's not future proof at all.

Well that depends on your usage pattern. Certainly for me it was a big step up and I expect to see me using it till google stops updating it at least. But then my needs are limited. After all I used a Nexus 4 from launch till this year and was fine.

I agree but prospective buyers need to be warned that as regards performance the 5X is a 2013 Android phone but with a very good camera and a fingerprint reader. There are better choices out there for someone who wants their phone to last 3+ years.

The LG G5 price is dropping like a rock already, soon that will be a viable mid budget phone recommendation.

So what is LG like in terms of updates with its non nexus devices?

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
eBay Daily Deals is a legit megaton phone landscape changing thing that a lot of people know about.

It's absurd what you can find on there.

I use hangout phone everyday. It is the cheapest way to call over seas. Call quality is awesome. Nationally it is free. I save tons and tons of money this way.
