Games that failed to launch a new franchise

I'm talking about games that many expected to be the start of a big new IP, but then the latter never happened. Whether due to poor critical reception, commercial performance, dev being shut down, or other reasons, in any case, the first game failed to spawn sequels or follow-ups. Thus, a would-be new franchise became a one-off instead. Or maybe had some spin-offs, but no proper mainline follow-ups.

I'll give Nintendo Land as an example. It was hyped as the Wii U's answer to Wii Sports. The launch title and proof of concept for the new system's asynchronous local multiplayer. I liked the game a lot, but it didn't sell consoles and has been forgotten by many. In a world where the Wii U did better commercially, I could see DLC and sequels for Nintendo Land. As it is, it's likely a one-off and wasn't even available digitally for a long time.

The order
If no Sunset Overdrive 2 at e3 then this too.
nvm i think the order would be the only one since they planned all kinds of things and sony dropped them

Nintendo Land is a weird example since I don't see how that was supposed to launch new franchise when all it did was appropriate existing franchises. Doesn't really fit the premise at all.

I feel like The Order not being a franchise remains to be seen. Not enough time has passed.

Just look at Mirrors Edge, I never thought that game would get another entry or a "retry," but here we are.

This is the one that I think of the most since there was a ton of Hullabaloo around it, being a sci-fi epic trilogy and all that stuff. Obviously crashed on the runway.

Too Human comes to mind, for similar reasons and with similar results.

The Guided Fate Paradox

It was supposed to be this new IP with a number of different titles, but it didn't do so well so they wrapped up the story in a cheaply made sequel and that was it

But didnt ME review well? The order was reviewed terribly.

It reviewed pretty well, but sold pretty poorly.

Brings Bulletstorm to mind as well, it reviewed really well, but sold so badly that Epic cancelled all plans for a sequel. Luckily, PCF got the IP back, so there's still hope.

Well I mention it because it seems pretty bare-bones, so there is a lot they could have done with a sequel. If Wii U had been a hit and Nintendo Land had sold 20M+ like its' Wii predecessors, then you can be sure we'd see Nintendo Land 2. NL2 could feature more Nintendo IP, park customization options, and some online functionality. We didn't even get DLC for Nintendo Land!

Evolve - but i think they'll try again

The Order:1886 - this one is dead.

Too Human - another one that's dead

Sunset Overdrive - I think MS will hold this one in it's pocket and bring it back later when they need it. Like Crackdown.

Mirror's Edge sold okay, north of 2 million copies. Granted it was multi-plat. I agree, though. I didn't expect a sequel.

Too Human thread? Too Human thread.

They oversold it and tried to make it a trilogy from the get go. Was pretty clunky and awful tbh.
