I'm talking about games that many expected to be the start of a big new IP, but then the latter never happened. Whether due to poor critical reception, commercial performance, dev being shut down, or other reasons, in any case, the first game failed to spawn sequels or follow-ups. Thus, a would-be new franchise became a one-off instead. Or maybe had some spin-offs, but no proper mainline follow-ups.
I'll give Nintendo Land as an example. It was hyped as the Wii U's answer to Wii Sports. The launch title and proof of concept for the new system's asynchronous local multiplayer. I liked the game a lot, but it didn't sell consoles and has been forgotten by many. In a world where the Wii U did better commercially, I could see DLC and sequels for Nintendo Land. As it is, it's likely a one-off and wasn't even available digitally for a long time.
