Games that failed to launch a new franchise

ADVENT RISING
This is the one that I think of the most since there was a ton of Hullabaloo around it, being a sci-fi epic trilogy and all that stuff. Obviously crashed on the runway.

Not only was it planned to be this sprawling franchise with a trilogy of games and all of that, there was also a spin-off game already in the works for it for PSP.

(*It did not look like this, of course, but there was a leaked animation video test which wasn't bad for PSP in 2005)

I heard Knack 2 was confirmed or something like that.
I feel it's more like Knack was being hyped up as the big family friendly launch title as well as being the next Sackboy style mascot for Sony. His biggest claim to fame is being an unfunny GAF meme right now.

It seemed like Microsoft was pushing Blinx to be a mascot in the vein of Mario and Sonic. The game was incredibly mediocre and never garnered the success they wanted to. It received a sequel, but by then no one really cared.

I could be wrong, but I think Nirolak intimated that 2K was still going in on an Evolve sequel.

Also, what's with everyone posting games that just came out? Bloodborne, Shadows of Mordor, Mighty Number 9, Battleborn, Knack, etc. There's no way of knowing if those games will ever get sequels or not. I mean, if Mirror's Edge and Spec Ops got sequels, anything is possible.

Army of Two got a big push and seemed to vanish.

This is a weird one because it had two sequels, one of which was fairly well received. I actually liked both of the sequels overall, and definitely saw the most potential for the franchise gameplay with the third one; but yeah I'm not sure it ever hit the height that they would've wanted from it.

Hmm... TWEWY always seemed like a one-off to me. Though there were the hints later with the iOS port, Kingdom Hearts appearance, that was well after the original release.

Wrong on two accounts

-TWEWY was a one off game
-Seven More Days, meaning they've teased TWEWY2
It's not immediate, but in no way does that game fit the criteria.

I didn't know it was a one off, interesting.
Yeah, the hints gave me the impression that they wanted to turn it into a franchise, but I don't expect a new game anytime soon.

Too Human is probably the most hilarious example of this, given the absurd amount of time and effort SK put into making it before it fizzled out from the get go.

Dark Sector
Lost Odyssey :(
Was Lost Odyssey really trying to launch a new franchise, though?

Evolve - but i think they'll try again

The Order:1886 - this one is dead.

Too Human - another one that's dead

Sunset Overdrive - I think MS will hold this one in it's pocket and bring it back later when they need it. Like Crackdown.

Insomniac own the rights to the Sunset Overdrive IP but I'm really hopeful that MS (anyone) funds a sequel.

As for the OP I'd say Too Human is a standout pick.

Well I mention it because it seems pretty bare-bones, so there is a lot they could have done with a sequel. If Wii U had been a hit and Nintendo Land had sold 20M+ like its' Wii predecessors, then you can be sure we'd see Nintendo Land 2. NL2 could feature more Nintendo IP, park customization options, and some online functionality. We didn't even get DLC for Nintendo Land!

Fair enough, still I think there are better examples to headline this question :D

The Order comes to mind but I'd TOTALLY buy a new game in the franchise as I think the lore was easily the best part (outside of the wonderful visuals)

Almost certainly going by the ending. Also, that propriety engine couldn't have been cheap. You don't spend that much money on an engine like that to only use it once.

I absolutely loved everything about The Order 1886 except the gameplay and the mainline story. The game engine is gorgeous, the characters are intriguing, the world building was fantastic. The only problem was the gameplay was terrible and the actual story you play was boring.

Centuries old organization derived from King Arthur and the Knights of the Round, increased life, members naming themselves after said Knights, incorporation of real history and historical figures/events, werewolves a deviation of human genetics, cool art style, cool uniforms, cool weapons (underused),
I mean come on, it was pretty rad.

I definitely hope another studio tackles a sequel. I know Sony owns the IP but who owns the game engine?

Was getting caught part of your plan?
Dante's Inferno had a "To Be Continued" teaser at the end of its game.

Guess that didn't pan out.

Also, I don't see Purgatorio or Paradiso being anything compelling gaming wise no matter how much they were gonna stretch their creative liberties.
