Games that failed to launch a new franchise

Jesus christ what is that thing, kill it and put it out of its misery

Also, this was actually a legit good game that deserved to start a franchise.

Did RaD basically say as much tho? They said they are working on a few titles and none of them have the do with The Order isn't one a rift exclusive? Also they are announcing there new game next week and all indications are that it is a new IP

Someone (I think Shinobi) hinted that they were working on a 3rd game that's being announced soon.

I think Defiance would count. It was supposed to be a transmedia project where the game and the TV show would interact and influence each other. The TV show was cancelled after three seasons. The game is still running and regularly updated, but it seems like Trion don't plan on developing the story any further.

I actually liked the game, as unpolished as it was. Never saw the show though or invested in the story beyond the game's story missions.

Pretty much every b tier game from early last gen. The kind that tanked publishers and developers because of the ballooning of budgets - I'm thinking games like Fracture and Dark Sector, stuff that no one even remembers.

I think the worst thing about these games was they were developed in an environment where game previews were still just gushing fanboy drivel with no criticism whatsoever. It's still a little like this in many outlets but overall things are better. Bad to mediocre games like those were a victim of a lack of criticism.

This thread has proved, unless a game is by a major publisher/developer and has mega marketing, new IP's will generally struggle. especially on consoles.

A game has to have brilliant multiplayer (Rocket League) or decent length single player for them to survive in the modern world. Take Doom (last release was 12 years ago) for example, its been a cult title for older and hardcore gamer's, but has it attracted the younger generation to buy it on all formats to let's say Overwatch. Twitch and YouTube has a major effect on modern gamer's where people would rather watch shorter games than play them.

Remember Me: had a lot of potential but failed from the beginning

Tearaway: even the PS4 port didn't sell enough, I gave it a chance, but the game is pretty boring

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Xenogears

Coz the ending states XENOGEARS EPISODE V, so what happened to Episode I-IV?

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic.

Amazing game (on pc. The console port was aparently nerfed)

Incredible melee combat, awesome level up system, levels that had so many encounter approaches that you could tackle in so many ways ! that game was just amazing from a gameplay perspective. While it is a spinoff from Heroes of Might and Magic, which in itself is a spinoff from Might and Magic, I do think it was intended to be turned into a first person series instead of a single game.

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
Back in the day, Sony was hyping this game up as a new mascot. It dropped like a wet fart, but still, a sequel was long rumored. But the game's lead character was voiced by Phil Hartman, who died soon after, and plans for the sequel were scrapped:

I remember playing the demo for this so many times. Never bought the game though.

Ms thread? As much as I like their games, they are the master of one hit games that never get the deserving sequel.

Just on the top of my head:
- Crimson Skies
Crimson Skies did get a sequel, though. High Road to Revenge was a sequel to the original Crimson Skies.

Haze, Fuse, Rage, The Order: 1886, Too Human, Advent Rising, presumably Battleborn as well at this point. And indeed, DmC: Devil May Cry was intended to mark a new beginning as part of a multimedia reboot for the franchise, but that's pretty much dead in the water at this point.

As much as I would like to see more, feeling rather pessimistic about Under Night In-Birth's prospects these days (may or may not be speaking too soon in its case).

I actually enjoyed both Brute Force and Too Human. They had interesting settings and there was a lot of potential with them. Too bad they both bomba.

Rhythm Thief & the Emperor's Treasure ends in a pretty shameless sequel hook. Of course, most people probably played it for the music games rather than for the nonsensical story, so it's just a minor annoyance. Still, the game is fun, so it would have been nice to get others like it.

The way this game also ended on a cliffhanger...

catfish_mhissy_thats_sad_huh.gif

So, they made a game that ends with a cliffhanger, then a DLC that ends with even a bigger cliffhanger, and then a handheld sequel that also ends with a cliffhanger? What's wrong with you Ubi?

It absolutely was.

And what publisher / developer the size of 2K and Gearbox doesn't kick off new IPs in an effort to launch a franchise? That makes no sense.
The new game will help Take-Two solidify its position in the first-person shooting game genre, going forward. The attractive features and interesting storyline of the game will help Take-Two capture console market share amid significant competition from Electronic Arts (EA) and Activision Blizzard (ATVI).
Yeah...that definitely did not go as anticipated for them.

Didn't Namco say they wanted Enslaved: Odyssey to the West to be a franchise? That didn't work out.

I think Capcom said something similar about Asura's Wrath. That didn't work out either.

Binary Domain.

Arguably was suppose to launch SEGA's premier console development team Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio into the international spotlight with an ending that hinted at more to come. It's absolute failure was the straw that broke SEGA's back and put them in a position to reconsider console game development.

Yeah, The Order seems like an obvious one and considering UC4 might be the last Uncharted, The Order could've taken over as Sony's main TPS franchise.

This game had great graphics, suberb physics and excellent gameplay. The reviews were mostly very positive. It's a shame it sold poorly.

Does Dead Space count? They got one cool concept that didn't do that well and then tried twice to make it a big seller and couldn't. All of its games happened in the same generation, and there seems to be no particular interest to follow them up.

Dead Space was absolutely a franchise. A short-lived one, but it was a franchise nonetheless. It got multiple spinoff games, comic books, and TWO films. That's more than what even some of the oldest franchises in the industry have gotten.

It's easy to name any game that performed badly and never got a sequel...

The ones that truly hurt are the ones that promised the start of something bigger.

I thought this was going to be a franchise when I saw the first reveal trailer.

My dad had Acclaim stock at the time and I can tell you that Acclaim was very much banking on Vexx being a huge franchise for them

It's not coincidence that Acclaim went out of business about a year after Vexx flopped
