Prey is BACK! (Arkane Austin, 2017, PS4/XB1/PC)

I know it's not Prey 2, but it seems like it'll continue the sci-fi horror tradition of Dead Space and Alien: Isolation. So I'm very glad it exists.

I loved the original Prey, such an underrated game. I think the trailer looked pretty good though. I'm looking forward to it.

I... think that wasn't CGI?

Anyway, I'm sad that the old Prey 2 is gone but since this is basically System Shock 3 I'm pretty damn keen!
Definitely cg

I've never played the original Prey, but I wonder if this is set in the same universe (will bring back this Tommy guy), or it's a total reboot, and from now on, they'll do the Far Cry type thing, with each game being something related to being 'prey', united thematically, but not narratively.

I will take an educated guess and say that it's on a different universe.

This is easily the most interesting new software of E3 (including this past week) so far for me. Seems like a compelling and dark narrative and Arkane is known for stellar and dynamic gameplay. Might as well look at it as a new IP. Definitely on my radar!

I'm not interested at the moment since it's not Tommy. This is a proper 100% reboot so I'll need some gameplay on the menu to say anything substantial. Arkane Studios is a good sign though.

Quick recap on Prey 2's rocky history. Prey 2 was originally being developed for Radar Group in 2008, after Human Head's Soma was cancelled by Ubisoft. It starred Tommy and featured portals, time manipulation and wall-walking! 3DR, and by extension Radar, got into huge trouble in 2009 after Recoil's Earth No More couldn't attract a publisher without selling the IP, 2K canned Gearbox's Duke Begins, and weren't interested in funding DNF without purchasing the property. Radar sold the licence to Zenimax, and Human Head pitched them on an open-world bounty hunting game starring Tommy. It was signed in July 2009, but Bethesda's marketing said that Tommy was too whiny in the first game and no one would identify with his Native American goals. Human Head were tasked with creating a protagonists their girlfriends would find attractive, so Killian Samuels was born. Once the game was revealed and there was a big backlash that Tommy wasn't in the game, Bethesda asked the team to put him back in.

Human Head stopped working on Prey 2 in November 2011 shortly before the game reached alpha after Bethesda tried to buy the studio through milestone abuse. Human Head, hoping Bethesda would honor their original arrangement, attempted to negotiate with Bethesda. Things were moving forward until March 2012, when talks stalled. Zenimax released a warning to Human Head to return to work through a Dutch news outlet that Prey 2 was going to be cancelled next week. That all stopped on April 9th, 2012 after Human Head announced plans to make Rune II.

On April 19th, Bethesda released an extremely passive-aggressive update, before giving the project to Obsidian who worked on it for a few months. Unfortunately, since they didn't have the source code, or rights to use any of the internal tech Human Head owned (mega-textures, global-based lighting, etc), it was doomed from the start. It was cancelled and quietly removed from Bethesda's upcoming titles on their site in August 2012.

In May 2013, Kotaku and a Prey fan site revealed that Arkane Austin (who were unhappy with the situation and leaked the news) had been ordered to reboot Prey 2. This was later confirmed in leaked emails shortly after the news broke. The Austin team, which was previously a satellite studio, licensed the Cryengine in mid-2013 and staffed up in early 2014. Bethesda's Pete Hines continued to lie about the project being cancelled for years before casually mentioning to someone from CNET at Aussie PAX 2014 that Human Head's game was over.

I find it hard to get excited for this when it is stupidly associated with a gross corporate takeover that took away a fantastic project from a great studio. This doesn't thrill me as much as Prey 2 and it's sad. Hope this game is good, but it seems like Bethesda is just forcing a brand.

Prey is dead and they own the name. Why not?

It associates it with a game that didn't do well enough for a sequel and doesn't seem to be anything like this game.

Basically if someone is familiar with the old game and doesn't like it, it turns them away from this. If they are familiar with the old game and like it, it turns them away from this. If they aren't already familiar with Prey it might as well be a different name anyway because there's no familiarity.

I see zero benefit to using this name.

Human Head's Prey is still pretty fun to play. I bought a copy on eBay last year and asked the seller to email me the key before sending the disc. Every retail key as far as I'm aware can be redeemed on Steam, so I've never needed the disc. Good times. Great with the Steam controller, too.

So, this is a game that has nothing whatsoever to do with the first game, only a very loose thematic resemblance, if I'm reading it right. And not even the portal mechanic is there?

So it's really not a sequel to or a reboot of Prey from 2007, it's just a different game that happens to share the name.

Not sure why they're even using that title for it then. Or is there a link I'm not seeing?

For all intents and purposes, this is a new IP. Just think of it as this game and the 3D Realms game just being named the same.

Yeah. The more i think about it the more i think this will never be 1/4 as good as the original or the awesome looking Prey 2. This is a disservice to the Prey IP.

"People found out about Prey 2 and hate us for it. Lets make a reboot". What kind of idiot thinks that?

Ex-Prey 2 devs congratulate Arkane. Talk about a nice gesture considering what went down. Somehow I doubt Arkane will return the favor, considering Raf's nervous spiel failed to mention there's already a game called Prey developed by Human Head.

Oh well, goodbye bounty hunter/open world Prey 2. You were always too good for this world.

This looks okay, need gameplay to get a proper idea of atmosphere, etc.

Can't really say anything about the game after a trailer like that, but it does sound interesting from what they've said. "Good morning, Morgan" sure sticks, though.
Morgan is chinese. You choose male or female.

That's great, one of the first things I thought of when I saw the trailer was if you'd get a choice with the main character.

Excited for Shawn Elliott. Heard Bioshock Infinite's best combat arenas were his. I am reminded of his ideas on STALKER's enemy and combat design being great of GFW Radio.

Do you have a link to this? Always like hearing about STALKER but never got the chance to talk to Shawn about it.

They set it up in the first game (set up a sequel, not this game).

spoiler of prey ending:

Gigantic biomass alien construct is harvesting planets (like earth), at the center is one being that is in control of everything. You take control of it at the end and put the construct into the sun to destroy it. The native american culture is implemented ala Stargate Egyptian culture. It was way older than anything on earth, originated somewhere else. On the alien construct/vessel you get help from an underground rebellion group that consists largely of half transformed (half human-half machine) people like yourself. You manage to free them and their leader is rescuing you from the sun-death and is taking you through an interdimensional portal to an unknown place, to help them in a far larger war.
I may have gotten some things wrong here, it's been a long time since I've played the game.

I personally thought it was an interesting story, I like how crazy it got towards the end. As I said, it was very Stargate like imo and it would have been easy to make new stories around that.

this is not the scifi prey game I wanted... ;_; especially not after the ending of prey 1.

damn I'm salty now.

EDIT: is there a way to buy the first prey for pc?

"It's not a sequel. It's not a remake. It has no tie to the original. It's more like an Arkane version of the original." - Arkane on Prey (2017).
it will probably be a nice game, but I had enough of gritty dark shooters. I mean prey 1 was also dark and with some horror stuff..but the story and all the native american stuff was amazing

Well that's disappointing. The game will probably be good (and I do think it sounds interesting), but prey was a unique game, and was hoping to hear more about that universe and what happened to tommy after the end of the first game. Has the full story from cancelled version leaked ?

Wish they would have called this something else if it doesn't tie into the other games in any way.

so this is their "system shock 3" game.

I guess the thing that links this to the original prey, is the presence of a technology (time reverse? trapped in virtual simulation?) that, much like the portals and the gravity platforms of the first game and the spirit world part, fucks things up, with the resulting feeling that the reality you're witnessing is... "is it real?". Prey felt unreal sometimes to me, nightmare-ish specifically.

Also the best thing of prey 1 was the first level in the bar, so much interaction. A new game that a has an highly interactive gameplay, like system shock, feels the right thing and very interesting to me.

Certainly much more interesting that the canceled prey 2, which sounded just a sci-fi assassin creed.

JaseC

gave away the keys to the kingdom.
What happened to the original game? I've read it was pretty much complete.
It should be leaked on a torrent site or something just for preservaton's sake. It's a goddamn shame it was canned.

"Prey2" is in the Steam registry and has achievements that span the entire campaign, so it must have been content complete or close to it.

It's time like this I wish I worked at Valve, so I could generate myself a key and satisfy my curiosity.

Arkanes version of the original? With no tie and no reference to the original. No retelling. Not the same design. Not the same aliens and stuff...

Yeah well why naming it Prey then?

That's what I don't get. Why trade on the name if you don't want to make something even remotely similar to it? Especially when the original will be a decade gone by the time this comes out.

We might want to change the thread title, because really there's nothing that is "BACK".

Doesn't look like Prey to me.

But, what's Prey?

The original game was in development hell and the final released version didn't have a lot in common with the original concept, from what I know.

Later, the announced Prey 2 again didn't have anything to do with both proto-Prey 1 concept or Prey 1 game.

And now, this game doesn't have anything to do with Prey 1 or proto-Prey 2.
