Miyamoto: Nintendo can't comment on NX because of "an idea that we're working on"

I hope this is a mistranslation, because "idea that we're working on" doesn't inspire confidence that the NX will actually ship in 2017. It's not a phrase you want to be using 9-12 months out from shipping a new console.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
I hope Miyamoto has very little to do with 'the idea'. I would have thought the abject failure of the gamepad would have them shy around tying themselves to some huge 'new' gimmick, but I guess they haven't been sufficiently shown the errors of their ways yet in the completely different tech landscape of now.

Most people doesn't want gimmick, but most people that are saying that is still using those gimmicks....

Many companies are suprised by nx, that wouldn't be the case if they think it was just another simple gimmick.

Nintendo should have something special there, they also change the game industry with their gimmick: rumble and 3d stick, so i believe they can do it again.

Also people have to know they will step away of the idea what they did with wiiu or wiimote, it would be different.

100% true. People just don't know what they want.

Good. Make something different than Xbox/PlayStation. I doubt it'll be VR since Nintendo wasn't really fond of VR as of late. Plus I can't see them pushing local multiplayer experiences with VR. Maybe if they did AR with cheap glasses that'll be cool. I want them to take as much time as they can go make this a good launch.

Random thought.

Nintendo is known to return to their (and not only their) old ideas occasionally. GamePad was a reiteration on GBA/GC link cable. 3DS was reiteration on something they tried with GameCube. StreetPass was a reiteration on a DS game gimmick from something (Dragon Quest? Not sure). And the whole hybrid library concept could be seen as reiteration on GameBoy Player and SGB.

One of known abandoned elements of DSi is that it was supposed to have two cart slots for some reason. Is NX home SKU, among other things, Sufami Turbo HD? Note that this would be a relatively cheap-to-manufacture gimmick with card slots, but relatively complicated with discs, and Ninny doesn't want to get a reputation of pushing digital, not after the 180. Of course one could say that a lot of games unlocked extras without need for such a feature, but it could be more interesting if there was a global framework of things that games are supposed to share (textures, humanoid characters, simple maps...).

Or maybe it's something completely different like all physical games in amiibos I don't know

I appreciate it when Nintendo is being crazy and weird. You never know what to expect with them and it's pretty exciting. I just hope it works out for them this time so their software can shine.

New ideas that separate them from the competition isn't a bad thing. Wii U didn't work out, but it's not because new ideas are bad, bad new ideas are bad
i do like the gamepad, but it's best as an addition to a normal game meaning that it's either very subtle or too distracting. When it's subtle it's great, but I don't imagine most think it's $100 great

Go ahead ya'll....speculate. I really think this is a translation thing. NX is my second Nintendo console since GBA. I can't wait.

The problem with the Gamepad was that it was a poorly designed, bloated mess. It was unappealing and confusing to casuals in an era of tablets, and too big and bulky for core gamers. The gimmick for the NX needs to be well thought out and designed like the Wii Remote or the DS was. It needs to return to the simplicity, and approachable interface of those platforms, while presenting itself as it's own beast.

Um... why is everyone reading this as him saying that the main gimmick hasn't been decided on? I'm confused.

If you guys are right though, then it would make the chances of it releasing in March or even Summer 2017 zero.

Then we are back in the same boat as Wii U with the gimmick not being well utilized or worth the extra cost.

I'm just praying its not an weird input thing. Im actually hoping the scrollable shoulder buttons thing is true. It would be a change that adds a lot to playing games without changing the expected feel of a controller.

It's incredible how little we know about the NX considering that the release date is actually not that far away.

I hope this time they do not go too far away with the gimmicky part; while I truly enjoyed the Gamepad on Star Fox Zero I resorted to the Pro controller for most of other games.
They should find a solution that is comfortable and usable for all games and ditch the rest. I found myself several times going from Gamepad to Pro controller to Wii controller + Nuckchuck and that's incredibly cumbersome.

The gamepad's extra cost kept the specs down and the price up scaring away the casuals and core group.
Going after new ideas is good, just hope they keep that in mind. Wii U is *still* $300

remember people, this is the guy that was keeping double dash a secret because he thought other devs were gonna copy it because the double car seat was so brilliant.

but he also said this about a wii, so idk. this could mean anything.

Yep :

So no wii (u) stratergy.

All this really means is that it won't be called the "Wii U Mii" or something, and will have a completely seperate entity. Nintendo may be done with the Wii brand but that doesn't mean they won't revisit some of the ideas it introduced.

Ironically this is what I think Nintendo's next gimmick will be. A sort of "One-size-fits-all" adaptable controller that can be a suplimental touch screen, motion remote, hardcore gamepad, media remote, and productivity tool in one. No need to try and dig up your Wiimote for Nintendo Land, or dust off the pro controller for Bayonetta, you can play all those games the way you usually would using just one controller.

What if you could have interactive experiences... on your home television set? This idea is now a reality, with the Nintendo NX.

Not true

Nintendo NX Will Be ‘New Experience’, Not Next Version of Wii U

I could give you a list of what nintendo has brought of gimmicks in the past beside wii.
I'm sure now you'r using every gimmick from them.

Did you read the article ? “not building the next version of Wii or Wii U”

Well, this could either go like the Wii or the Wii U. The problem with something like this is that you fully run the risk of making it a situation where your feature is worthless because third parties aren't going to focus on something the isn't standard across all platforms (I include VR in that despite it also being on PC) and is solely on the platform with the lowest install base. I know Nintendo fans like to say people buy Nintendo hardware for Nintendo games but the Wii U proves that's not true and even the 3DS is way behind its predecessor.

Curious to see what they are going to do though.
