These shabby peripheral elements prevent Furi from being a masterpiece, but scarcely detract from the exquisite white knuckle action Furi delivers in spades. Furi may look rough around the edges and its seemingly slight slew of content may be a tough sell (especially at the somewhat pricey €24.99 / $24.99) but at the end of the day it's a winning premise done right. Elegant, deep, inspired, and oh so tight, Furi is a gem.

Nerd Reactor - 5/5
Ladies and gentlemen, we have a sleeper hit on our hands. Not only is Furi aesthetically pleasing, but the boss-fight focused combat is pulled off extremely well to the point where it is, dare I say it, addicting! During my times away from this game, I would often think about how I was going to handle the boss I was currently on at the time and became completely satisfied once I beat them. The talented developers at The Game Bakers should be proud of their masterpiece and I can not wait to see what future games are in store for them.

High-Def Digest - 5/5

From a studio I’d never heard of and who, in turn, I expected nothing special from, 'Furi' makes me feel like a fool for ever judging it so harshly. Very possibly the best action game of this generation thus far, this is a rare example of every facet of a game's design working perfectly to create an amazing whole. This is an outstanding effort from a studio I’m going to follow wholeheartedly from here on out.

Gaming Trend - 95/100

Furi kicked my ass, and I loved it. There was laughter, there were tears, but most of all, there was a goddamned great game. The combat is extremely taxing, but fair, and the narrative is surprisingly rewarding. If you’re a masochist, Furi is the game you’ve been waiting for.

Digital Chumps - 9/10

Furi becomes essential by identifying and removing what it declares expendable. There are no exotic mechanics, insatiable combo chains, or compulsory battles against waves of time-eating sycophants. Instead, Furi trusts the player to process a tiny allowance of raw actions into a dazzling exhibition of refined skill. With a Murderer's Row of bosses perfectly apt to oblige this exercise, Furi helps define a new aesthetic of rarefied action.

God Is A Geek - 9/10

Furi is a rare game. Its unique design manages to make single encounters feel like multiple levels, and the combination of bullet-hell mechanics and precise, responsive melee combat is addictive and punishing at the same time, repeatedly forcing you to climb a steep mountain of frustration and rage to bask briefly in the shiny, transient light of unparalleled joy when you finally vanquish a foe – before you’re knocked straight back down into the darkness to begin the climb again. The difficulty will put many off and almost certainly divide opinion, but if you can accept Furi for what it is and stomach its titanium challenge, you won’t find anything else like it.

Tech Raptor - 9/10

Furi‘s love of boss fights combined with its simple yet effective mechanics, interesting story, lovely visuals, and fantastic soundtrack leads to what is easily my favorite release of 2016 so far. I was pretty excited going in, and watching the game meet each of my expectations would prove to be a real treat. The challenge may not be for everyone, but those with even a vague interest in the idea will probably find Furi to be a game they’ll be thinking about for a long time.

The OuterHaven - 4/5
Furi is a game for fans of wicked-fast action and cruel difficulty. Jarringly chaotic shooting sections can feel punishingly arbitrary compared to the precise and focused melee combat, and having to replay entire twenty minute segments can get frustrating, but at the end I cannot deny that I felt a satisfying sense of accomplishment. Add to that a visual and audio flair all its own and you have a title more than worth revisiting, if only for the satisfaction of throwing your opponent to the ground after a perfectly-timed parry.

Push Square - 7/10

Furi excels when you're in the heat of the moment, fighting for survival against great looking boss characters. Super responsive controls elevate the action, and a fantastic soundtrack only adds to the brilliant rush that the game's capable of providing - it's just a shame that everything outside of the crisp combat doesn't quite measure up. When Furi's on point, it looks, sounds, and feels incredible, but a little too often, it struggles to maintain its intensity.

Videogamer - 7/10

When it works Furi nails that moreish blend of challenge and reward. Defeating a boss after a 20-minute battle, you down to your last health bar, is immensely satisfying. This is air punch stuff. Not being able to defeat a boss after the fifth, sixth, seventh attempt is not satisfying. Without anything of interest to link battles, it's easy to find yourself spending more time being frustrated than having fun. Furi is an interesting game, if not an an essential one.

I had no idea it was coming out so soon and and I had no idea it was the PS+ game. This is fantastic.

If it's indie I don't want it~

haha just kidding this sounds fucking amazing. Indie games have been winning my best game of the year award for the past few years, so this one sounds like it could be a contender.

This looks great. Both stylistically amazing and with solid game play. Any numbers on how long it is yet?

Cannot WAIT to pick this up. I love everything thing I've seen (and heard... dat soundtrack!) from this. It's exactly the kind of game I need in my life right now. Glad to see it reviewing well.

Seems genuinely interesting which is more then I can say for most PS+ games these days.

Actually looking forward to giving it a go.

Hmm, great reviews. I think I'll download it when it goes live. If I don't like it, I'll just delete it. I just hope SEA PSN does have it for free this month. Last month, we got Tropico instead of Gone Home.

Is this gonna be like God Hand? Remember God Hand? That game was pretty fun.

Funny you mention that considering that's one of the games the devs took inspiration from

There is a feeling that I remember from when I was a kid playing video games: the huge, intense satisfaction when I finally beat a level or a boss I had been struggling with for a while. The feeling of learning how to overcome a challenge, with my brain and my thumbs. The combination of understanding and execution felt like a reward in itself.

I remember it from games like Super Punch Out, bosses from Metal Gear Solid, combat in God Hand. There are many games that gave me that feeling, but recently I’ve felt that games try too hard to be “user friendly.” Adaptive difficulty, dynamic checkpoints, in-game tips… Everything is explained and balanced to make sure nobody drops out.

'With Furi, we want to give the player an extreme satisfaction when he or she beats a boss. That means he or she will have to sweat a little for it.

Furi is heavily inspired by the Japanese way of making games. It’s not trying to be realistic in its style or animations. It’s fast-paced and requires a lot of timing, reflex, and judgment. When you press a button, the character reacts immediately. It’s part of what makes it “fair.” Too often in modern games, we press a button and then, in order to make the game look realistic, the character will start an animation that “looks good” but “feels heavy,” and is unresponsive, even laggy. Responsive controls feel good and are a must-have in a combat game.'

In all seriousness, it doesn't appeal to me like 90% of indies don't.

So most of the time, your indie statement holds true for me.

This game seems to be a lot better than the title implies. "Furi" sounds like a crappy 2D sidecroller with furry cartoon characters. Can't wait to try it.

Nice reviews but the whole boss fight focus is just an instant turn off for me. I'll give it a try on my spare account either way. Standard procedure. If the trophies are easy I'll play through.
