I unexpectedly bought an XB1 today. What games should I get?

Xbox One 500GB Console - Gears of War: Ultimate Edition Bundle + $50 Amazon Gift Card [Physical Card] + Fallout 4 [Physical Disc] + Xbox One Special Edition Dusk Shadow Wireless Controller + Forza Horizon 2 [Emailed Digital Code]

I got this deal for $279.99 - $30, plus tax. Seemed like a good deal.

The thing is, I don't care for TPS, FPS, that sort of game, or racing. No knock against them, just not for me. I also don't need a second controller, or at least not from the get go. (It looks like I can probably get $50 for the controller and a good chunk of change for the games combined in B/S/T or on eBay, so I'll list them there.)

(I'm going to say I a lot but just assume I mean we, since my wife and I will be playing pretty much everything together.) Anyway, I purchased the system because I want to play Rare Replay and Ori, and I don't have a gaming PC. But, I don't have a PS4--we are a Wii U and PS3 household prior to this.

So, I'm interested in any XB1 exclusives or any PS4-XB1-PC exclusives, but presumably more in the vein of sidescrollers, platformers, action/adventure type games, puzzles, unusual sorts of games, probably anything not involving killing a lot of people or racing against them or sports. I know I bought the right system if I want anything in those genres, but alas just not my thing. So, please recommend anything that comes to mind. Thanks all!

Do you have an Xbox 360? There are a ton of backwards compatible arcade games you can play on Xbox One.

Castlevania SOTN, Castle Crashers, Braid, N+, Super Meat Boy & Peggle all come to mind. If you end up loving Ori check out Shadow Complex. It's the same genre but does involve killing humans.

Uh, there's Ori and the Blind Forest I guess. And Rare Replay is good. Otherwise, you bought a hell of a Christmas gift for someone?

Maybe Rare Replay if you like older stuff?
Also, Guacamelee for platforming

:p Looking forward to playing it!

I like Metroidvanias a lot. That one is definitely on my radar. Thanks, Lamonster. Definitely interested in some BC games. Particularly anything not also on PS3 since I neglected to mention we have a PS3. Will update the OP.

If you aren't into FPS, TPS, or racers you've made a bad purchase if you were looking for exclusives. Rare Replay would be my only recommendation outside of those genres.

Give me the Forza Horizon 2 code then. :p

But yeah, if you like/now of Halo; 5 is a blast. Give it a try even if you're not big on FPS. There's the strategic Halo Wars which is for 360 and will get an Xbox One sequel next year.

Killer Instinct is free to start if you like fighters.

Rare Replay is a great compilation and at a great price.

Quantum Break is quite good too. Sunset Overdrive too; loved the craziness of it.

And there's 360 backwards compatibility with some games.

I only played about half of it but it's really quite excellent.

Inside, Rayman Legends, Life is Strange.
I hear The Banner Saga is good.

Alien Isolation if you want a survival horror game. It's first person though.

Super Time Force is pretty great. Cuphead and Below look like they're going to be awesome. I second the recommendation for Sunset Overdrive very strongly.

That is amazingly helpful and several of those are not on PS3 or Wii U. Awesome. I remember I was really interested in Max, and not just because of my shared name. Thank you!

Stranger of Sword City is a pretty great dungeon-crawling RPG. Its on Xbox One as a digital only title, but if you're a Vita owner you can get it there in either digital or physical. Its also on Steam. The link leads to a video I did recently where I play it and talk about it for a little over an hour. Earlier in the story, no spoilers.

Killer Instinct is also a fantastic package. Its got one of the best soundtracks in the history of the genre, great characters, and a ton of stages. I don't play this one online, so don't let anyone tell you its only good if you play against other people. I have played the story stuff as well as general fights against the AI and I have a lot of fun with it. Its great, so be sure to at least check out the free rotating-character version!

You've mentioned Rare Replay and Ori which are both great.

You don't like FPS/TPS games otherwise I'd have said get Halo 5 and possibly Quantum Break but forget those.

Sunset Overdrive is fantastic and not a traditional shooter, EA Access is great value if you have any interest in those games (Peggle 2, Plants vs Zombies and Unravel are all in the vault), Inside is a brilliant game which sounds right up your alley.

D4 is an unusual game, not sure how well it controls without Kinect but it definitely works with controller only and you should check it out for sure.

Killer Instinct is free so it own't hurt to check it out.

There are some other puzzle/platformer games on the system, Max and the curse of brotherhood is a simple but fun game. Chariot is another puzzle/platformer that has local co-op so you and your wife can play together.

If shooters and racers are off the table then your options are kind of limited outside of a handful of BC games. Look into Unravel though. I think it might appeal to you. And possibly Tembo as well as someone else stated.

I think you'd like Tembo the badass elephant.

Oh!! Yes. Thank you. I forgot this was on XB1. Really wanted to play it. Have you played it, TEJ?

Thanks! Oh, yeah, Unravel was high on my list for a while and then reviewers seemed less enamored of it; were GAFer impressions (and your own) more favorable?

Shadow Complex is an excellent metroidvania game and BC I believe.

Dangerous Golf, which received an update today adding new features and fixes, is a great game for $20. It's made by many ex-Burnout devs and a real good game for that sort or arcade, nostalgic fix!

I woukd look in to superhot as well op. Its a puzzle game disguised as a shooter. Think portal.

I echo the sentiments of sunset overdrive and Max. Also you dont know jack is a great pafty game. Tenbo the badass elephant is a fun side scroller by gamefreak.

Dunno about others on GAF, but I really enjoyed it. Only real complaint I could level at it would be that it's pretty short.

Ori and the Blnd Forest. D4. Monkey Island 1+2 are BC. Alan Wake is BC, not too much of a tps, but the story and atmosphere are great. Heard crazy good things about Inside.

Castlevania SOTN is on the PS3 and possibly cheaper there but I'm not positive. If you like that, its also worth checking out Castlevania: Harmony of Despair on PS3 as well. Its a multiplayer Vania where you have about 20-25 minutes to defeat each stage. You can play it solo or local multiplayer. Just remember you can zoom into the stage when you start. I saw people at a gaming expo playing it zoomed all the way out because they didn't know you could zoom in.

Sorry, I know this is an Xbox One thread, but I had to profess my love for the Castlevania games.

Cdkeys.com has been selling codes for Max really cheap. They were $1.something at some point, currently $4.45

Assuming you're gonna get gold, just get it from GWG Japan.

Anyways, for non Japan customers, if you want Max free:
https://store.xbox.com/en-US/Xbox-O...therhood/1d6640d3-3441-42bd-bffd-953d7d09ff5c
Bottom Left > Click your region > click Japan > buy for 0 Yen.

Edit: Unravel is on EA Access, just get that instead for a month (make sure you cancel before your months up). Or there's a $20 a year subscription but I'm not sure if you'll like it that much since you don't like FPS, Racing games etc.

Ori and Rare Replay are fantastic starts. You'd probably like Max and the Curse of Brotherhood and Inside as well. You should give Sunset Overdrive a shot anyway since the traversal and platforming are core to the gameplay.

Seems you didn't have a 360, so the Rare Replay games like Kameo, Viva Pinata Trouble in Paradise, and Banjo Nuts & Bolts will keep you plenty busy. You could check out Fable 2 and Shadow Complex as well. Maybe Kingdom of Keflings / World of Keflings? If Dust: An Elysian Tale and Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet ever become BC then you'll like those as well.

EDIT: Tembo the Badass Elephant is great, but very challenging. Unravel is a good game, but I wouldn't put it high on the list. Get through Ori and all the Rare Replay stuff first.

Get Limbo if you haven't already, and then get INSIDE. Prepare for some twisted but awesome stuff.

Limbo is available on every platform known to man. But, yea, Inside does look amazing.

Personally I'll be most interested in Rare Replay whenever I get around to picking one up.

Nice shit post.

Doesn't make it invalid though. If the OP doesn't like games like Halo, Gears and Forza, XB1 was probably not the right choice.

OP Inside is supposed to be great - side scrolling puzzle game. I'm probably not the first to mention it, but you may want to check it out.

Here's some good ones that you might be interested in based on what you mentioned in the OP:

Diablo 3 - (couch co-op)
Sunset Overdrive
Limbo
Inside
Resident Evil - Revelations 2(couch co-op)
Oxenfree
Life is Strange
Gone Home
Never Alone (couch co-op)
Super Time Force
Thomas Was Alone
IDARB (couch co-op)
Max: The Curse of Brotherhood
Rise of the Tomb Raider

Be sure to take a look at the 360 games playable on XB1, since didn't have a 360

Please. These consoles share 90% of the same library. It was a shit post.

So, the only games available on it are Halo, Gears, Forza, Rare Replay and Ori?

LOL. Ok.

DId you check out he doesn't have a PS4 or PC either?

Again, another shit post.

There are tons of terrific suggestions already to get you going! Also check out Layers of Fear if scary is your thing.

Edit: Also look into The Flame in the Flood. I haven't played it yet but it's on my to-buy list.

Sunset Overdrive!

(and post a screenshot of your character in the corresponding GAF thread!! I recommend playing as the girl though ...better voice over)
