UE4 Indie game Lost Soul Aside looks very impressive

This is very impressive work, despite the assets he used from the UE4 marketplace. However, lets not get ahead of ourselves here. This is a very early prototype FAR from completion but could well serve as a great resume to get into top tier action game developers, Capcom CPS/Team Ninja/Platinum.

If he's out to continue development on this and pursue releasing as a final product, more power to him. This should go viral.

Looks like the dudes doing an incredible job, extremely impressive.

Also the fact he was able to do all that solo in 2 years is about the biggest sell for UE4 ever. Can't wait until more indie UE4 games start coming out. Gonna be some incredible looking stuff.

I remember reading that it's becoming more commonplace for large teams to outsource the production of assets to other companies. I believe SE had a presentation on how they're bringing their teams from other countries together for the production of FFXV.

I don't think it diminishes the end product to use new tools or available assets.

What we're looking at is pretty impressive. I don't think the existence and/or use of a asset storefront should be used as a way to bludgeon Yang Bing's success here.

DUDE! I can't believe that the developer of Proxy Blade Zero is here!
I just played that like 4 days ago and wrote about in another forum (would link you to it, but I'm pretty sure you can't understand arabic lol)

the game was super cool and fast-paced, just my kind of game
I wish it got more attention though :(

Thank you for your support. What matters is that you enjoyed it ^_^

Will drop pants for Sony.
And the downplaying began, oh well.

There will always be haters in this world unfortunately. When Michelangelo finished the The Sistine Chapel ceiling I bet the haters were downplaying it. "Oh the The Sistine Chapel ceiling? you guys are so easily impressed"

As an authority on making a solo 3d Character Action Game by myself (and I also made my own game engine for it), I'd say that of course it's possible.
Given that this guy is on UE4, can use the asset store for trees and buildings, and has a much better artistic talent than I ever will (I'm shit), I'd say it's perfectly believable. It was only a matter of time till we saw someone like that pop-up.
Tho it's also possible that he was helped there and then by more experienced friends on stuff he got stuck on.

Also don't forget that it took him a whole 2 years to make that prototype. A quality studio can make such things in mere months (it took less than 2 years for Platinum to entirely finish Rising).
The main difference is time.

With that said, I hope it plays as good as it looks, because this potentially could be its downfall.
I'm still waiting for a Proxy Blade One with more polished/developed combat and encounters =D

PBZ is good fun and I remember seeing you posting about it here at GAF before the Steam release. It reminds me of Rengoku, with the the environments and robot characters.

Also the fact he was able to do all that solo in 2 years is about the biggest sell for UE4 ever. Can't wait until more indie UE4 games start coming out. Gonna be some incredible looking stuff.
Seriously!

Why try to downplay others? Either it's "Holy shit! One dude can do this but a whole company like Square can't do it, what fucking lazy devs" or "this guy didn't do all that much."

It's amazing what this guy did and I love that he took inspiration from FFXV. On the other hand, FFXV is trying to accomplish a whole lot more.

Exactly how I feel. Its annoying that some people can't just complement something without shitting on something else.

It looks good, but I am slightly concerned that the areas are too open and there are too few enemies for the amount of moves the player has. This dynamic creates an imbalance in favor of the player.

I cant believe something like THIS would garner hate from people. Am not talking about he people who dislike the trailer ( that is your opinion after all). But people going "Lol you guys are easily impressed" or that other guy going " Lol the only thing he got right is the generic Japanese face".Make me sick.

And the downplaying began, oh well.

Haters gonna hate man , some people here on GAF just live to do that. This dude deserves respect for what he has done.

absolutely insane work if he did it by himself

hell even if he didnt

He already mentioned he has bought some assets using the UE4 marketplace. But even besides that. There is still a LOT of work put into this.

Source on that?.

Idk about china and Square. But A LOT of Ubisofts work is outsourced to India at a much cheaper price. I am assuming its the same for many AAA devs. This dude Buying Assets off the store is really no different.

It really is, because custom assets can have artistic coherence, while off-the-shelf won't. It works well in the first\prototype phase, because you don't care that much \ you don't have enough areas to matter, to make a "compact" game that feels like a game and not a patchwork, you're going to have to follow a style - one style, not thirty-six different styles.

Also, what hate? There's like three posters responding to some hyperbole, and everyone else is (justly) impressed.

It's still a lot of work put toward the whole thing despite using premade assets.

A majority of the terrible games Jim Sterling covers on his show were made in a similar fashion, and still looked absolutely terrible.

The dude still has a crazy amount of talent.

It honestly looks better to play than FFXV.

Sure it doesn't have town and the production value of FF... But this looks very close art wise and combat seems very DMC ish.

Well, this seems like it is going to be straight action gameplay, FFXV aims for some peculiar hybrid, which I am not sure if it will work or not yet. While I think the environments looks nice in this, I don't think they can compare to FFXV, which isn't a knock. FFXV has always been at the top of the tier in terms of sci-fi fantasy hybrid environments in my opinion.

I am speechless. I'm not a fan of the Nomura-like character design, but the game honestly looks jawdropping.
And it's made by a single person, it's CRAZY.
BTW, I know it's meant to be a different genre, but I wish Scalebound had the same kind of combat system,

This dude models better than Square WTF. His character has the near exact facial features, and looks near identical as the 2013 Render. What did square do here?

Damn, the video is over 100,000 views now. I think it has a good shot of going viral when mainstream videogame outlets cover it on their platforms and it goes over a milion views

Poor XV

It's sad to see what I once(in 2011) thought would be one of the greatest playing ARPGs to be an example of bad gameplayin every ARPG game thread lol.

Yeah it's funny with the XV bashing, because that's his main source of inspiration and he's probably looking forward to playing it himself.

This is probably the most incredible achievement I have seen in gaming. The developer has nailed so many thing a that some big studios would kill for.

The gameplay looks impressive and the graphics are top notch. There is a little bit of yank, the ways the tree sway for example and the blade effects obscuring combat. But it's only apparent if you actively trying to criticise this.

If I was not told this was one developer, I would be excited, but further than this, he seems like he could work a team well, given his tasteful use of bought assets. I'm excited for his future, this sort of game is right up my ally. Hats off and standing ovation.

Cutscene v real-time model (Actually, the model is the same. The skin shader is the difference)

One person did this? I think that's a bluff.

Anyway, seems like a nice mix of FF, NG and DMC. Combat looks as fluid as NG, so that's a recipe for success, this is looking better than NIoh tbh......

This IS pretty awesome.

I'm not THAT blown away with the fact that only one person has been working on it, because one talented and dedicated person actually working full time for 2 years with an engine like UE4 can make great things indeed.

Yes, productivity at the AAA level with 100+ people working on something is not quite the same, sadly.

He just posted this on his FB page.

Hello everyone, thanks a lot for supporting me so much, I'm really glad to see that people like it. I have been working on it in full time for two years and feeding myself by doing freelance things, and actually my plan was to release the trailer at the end of fulltime development and find a full time job then continue it in part time with a really slow speed, maybe ten years or more.

My plan should disappoint you but by that way I can be less stressful, It's kind of selfish but just as Kazer said in the end scene, it's just for saving myself. I really haven't expected there are so many people like it which makes me hesitate to do as I planned. Actually a bit stressful right now.

This may disappoint you but I can't tell a lie that the game will come out in another 2 years. Maybe there will be some opportunity in the future allowing me to finish it within a team or in full time. But right now I'm tired and want a rest.

Sorry to disappoint you guys, and thank you again for encouragement.

There will be updates though.

Thank you again.

Edited wherever needed. Seems like a very passionate guy.

1. the character looks like the guy from FF:XV
2. not a great choice for a game title
3. for an indie game, it looks seriously impressive

Sounds like creating this playable thing for the video was, in effect, the end goal for this side project.

And as far as side projects go, this is a terrific choice to showcase and build for your portfolio as an artist/modeller/animator/whatever role you're hoping to get in the future.

Sounds like this game will never see the light of day based off that Facebook post. A bit dissapointing since it looks so promising, but I'm sure this will help kickstart this guys career in a big way.

Even with the environments being store bought for sake of showcasing the early footage, the sheer quality of it is amazing. The combat system looks ridiculously fun and fast paced as well. Even if the game never progresses pass this point, at the very least I hope he starts getting job offers because for the effort of 1 person to pull this off in 2 years with no budget is nothing short of amazing.

Kudos to the guy, amazing showcase.

This looks amazing, period. Combat looks fast, flashy and responsive. There is a large world with varied areas to explore. And you can fly!!! This adds so much to the exploration!
I really hope this game actually releases. Someone get him some good writers for the story and this will sell millions.

  • You could have 30 of this man and finish Uncharted5 in a weekend, if my calculations are correct.
  • When Visual Studio finds a syntax error in this guy's code, it automatically adds it as a feature to the programming language, because this guy cannot make a mistake.
  • When this guy is not developing the game, he runs c64 assembler in his mind for fun.
  • A snake bit this developer, and after two painful days, the snake learned how to develop an IOS game.

Lol.

A lot of these environmental assets seem to be from the UE4 market place, but this is the sort of experience that they were intended to get people to make. But what's truly impressive here is the combat, while more translucency here would probably be beneficial, the animation quality for a single person on a high octane action game is superb. Any person who has seen enough combat systems can tell from a glance whether a melee combat system works well or not and it seems the emphasis on dashes invoke Platinum's Nier:Automata combat system, albeit the dashes here seem to be invincible. The bosses look great too. The minimal emphasis on button prompts is also extremely welcome. This guy is likely a veteran to the genre and probably studied platinum and clover's action games for his inspiration.

Honestly, this guy deserves people to work alongside him. It's not everyday we get 3D character action talent.

What bothers me more is in the 2013 render, Noctis's eyes are seemingly smaller and resembles that of actual people more, while the current in-game model had that anime, soulless big eyes. It's like the FFX remaster where they replaced the PS2 models with new HD models, Yuna's eyes went from normal sized to huge, kawaii big eyes. Bleh.

The top guy doesn't really look like Noctis, more like a model that's inspired by the design rather than an exact copy.

And you do realize Noct is making a facial expression in the pic you chose for XV right? I'm sure you've seen better pics of Noct from the game where he has a plain face like in the renders and the viewing angle isn't completely different..

XV's Noct is closer to the pre-render, as it should considering it's the same model downgraded for real-time use.

the aesthetic and story looks a lil cringe, but from a gameplay and technical perspective this shit is top notch. Very impressive, wonder if it will ever actually come out.
