Xbox One S Thread: The S is for Sexy

I'm playing on PC 99% of the time. Interested in the Neo for the UHD BluRay and maybe trying out some exclusives I've missed recently. Xbox has Play Anywhere, which is a selling point for me too. Point being, if I had concrete info on the Neo at this point, I'd lean that way. With no info out, I'll jump on what's available.

I'm not going to cry about it if Sony releases awesomness at the end of the month. It just seems like the cut-throat business decision would have been to unveil the Neo now and ensure people looking to grab a new console pick up yours(the superior product). Waiting for a bunch of people to spend $399/299 and then asking them to spend $400 on the NEO and/or $400 on PSVR is odd.
The Neo is targeting a complete different audience more than likely. While XB1S is selling as a relaunch of the XB1 almost (new price, new look, new games, UHD, Xbox Play Anywhere) the Neo will be an extension of the PS4. Almost as if MS is targeting those who wouldn't purchase consoles normally while the Neo is going after those who want better performing games and such. The Neo will be pushed as a higher end gaming device that happens to do 4K, while the XB1S is a 4K machine and an Xbox. I like the distinction presented by Microsoft mainly because it echoes early PS3 sentiments with the Blu-ray player. I'm interested to see the more software approach come to fruition.

Reserved 500gig model online a few days ago.......
This past Saturday:

Bought a $100 Giftcard for $90 to GameStop on eBay,
Traded in my day one Xb1 at GameStop,
Contemplated and decided that I wanted the 2Tb model..(wife was onboard = double win)

Now if all goes well on Tuesday during lunch, I will be able to pick it up as the $250 I have put down towards the 500gig model can be transferred to the 2TB model.

=D

But it doesn't really. The PS3 was a damned good Blu-ray player, with features beyond what the market was providing--and at a lower price.

Much like the 360 HD-DVD add-on, the XBONE-S is really a less capable UHD player than stand alone units. (Although the HD-DVD audio re-encoding was quite the technical feat, it too wasn't capable of delivering the same experience as a stand-alone player.)

Well, the position of Sony and MS are not the same, the Scorpio will be out only at the end of 2017, making the Neo avalaible 1 year before that, to "fight" the Neo MS needs something, this something is the XO S. Sony has no reason to release something before the Neo... I mean, it will likely releases in October, it's just 2 months/2 months half after the XO S, Sony won't suffer from this new MS console, at all.
They might lose some sales to those that can't afford to buy two consoles the same year, and those who don't know about the Neo rumors. Tbh, that Sony, who's the master of creating hype for things to come if you wait, hasn't even mentioned Neo until the S has already launched and been the first 4K console on the market is imo quite strange. At this place we know Neo will be much better, why not get the mainstream to know it would be wise to wait just a bit longer and get a proper upgrade instead of rushing out and buy the S now?

Yea, exactly. I understand the arguments, but it still only makes sense for Sony to pull some love away from this launch and let consumers know what's coming. Just look at all the gaming hardware already released/on it's way soon: Titan X, 1080, 1070, AMDs Card, One S, PSVR, Oculus, Vive... but no official mention of PS consoles. A lot of people are already blowing through there gaming budget...

It doesnt need to make sense. The Neo will be directed at the hardcore gamers. Those people won't be buying the XB1S because the likely know the Neo is on the way as well as already being invested in the PS4 ecosystem. I'd put a dollar or two down on the 4K capabilities being an afterthought on the Neo, versus games being most of whats presented. "Oh I can play Destiny in 60fps now? Bloodborne in 60fps too? Awesome!" I can imagine Destiny also being the poster child for the Neo as well.

"It doesn't need to make sense" Seriously? Sony is passing up on all these buyers because their console is "hardcore"? No marketing required because everyone they want to buy is tapped into Neogaf and reddit? I don't think that's right at all. Everyone understands a value proposition. Showing better graphics and 4k support for an additional $100 (over One S) would be a no brainer for most people. I also can't imagine them not trumpeting some kind of 4k support. If their only selling point is a 30fps increase, then you're right, why advertise, they won't sell many consoles like that.

For those picking up an S, the Elite controller is $134.99 at Amazon with an additional $10 off for preordering the S.

I'm fairly certain Destiny could easily hit 60fps right now - it's framerate is identical to the last gen versions and I'm hoping they might patch it to 60 with Rise of Iron... they probably won't. I love the game too but every other shooter is 60fps.

It's uncertain if Neo even arrives this year, that's a big problem imo, even core gamers might jump in on One S now because they don't know when Neo arrives, and if Neo comes in september they might jump up on the fence for Neo awhile to spread out the costs a bit and then Scorpio marketings kick in and Neo will get a whole bunch of other problems to battle. I think Sony should've mentioned Neo and it's core features and at least a "coming this year" at E3. Being silent at this point is very strange. Honestly, with the E3 presentation ending so abruptly and no mention about Neo since then I wouldn't rule out if the orignal Neo plans were scrapped. Think about it. Maybe Sony found out about Scorpio before E3 and jumpstarted plan B to beat Scorpio for real next year instead. They haven't announced it yet, nothing is set in stone yet.

Yeah this is my problem. I want 4K and I was hoping to hear something more about Neo but it's been MIA. Sony is going to lose quite a few sales with their NOT unveiling the Neo or talking about it at all. Microsoft really beat them with getting a 4K console out.

I think if we don't get any news on Neo anytime soon then I'll probably just grab an Xbox One S to use as my 4K movie player and some light gaming. Really was hoping for Neo though. Sony needs to get on that.

Lol you seem more concrred about selling the system than Sony. In the reality of things, most people don't have 4K TVs still. It's a cherry on top. UHD has a looooong way to go before it takes off including the tech to become cheaper. At the end of the day, MS is trying to sell to the customer who didn't own an XB1 before (play anywhere initiative, the various bundles) while Andrew House himself said the standard base PS4 will continue to be aimed at the casual market. While the Neo may be an upgrade in every way possible, its still mostly for people who already own a PS4.

I'm really just arguing with you at this point. "In the reality of things" <- little things like that aren't necessary. Everyone that's chimed in thus far has disagreed with you. Whether you agree or not, both systems are pulling from a limited amount of customers at this point, limiting yourself further by only targeting a smaller subset of customers is not a winning strategy. 4k adoption isn't huge right now, but it's a tick on the back of the box/marketing, as well as a justification for people to see this purchase as "future-proof" to some extent.

It'll be interesting to see how it plays out, but as I mentioned in my first post, they lost this hardcore gamer's purchase by keeping quiet this long.

On Delivery route.

Then I'll have to finish up work, and then when I get home I'll set it up, update it, set up fallout 4 and watch my frist HDR movie.

I'm wondering if I should let the Xbox One S do the scaling or let the TV do it. Samsung's 4k scaling is nuts, it's so good.

Just play around and see what settings you like the most, Fallout 4 is a good game to test because the resolution isnt changing up and down or anything like that. But you ultimately wanna see how nice 4K media looks

Yeah my Sony 940d does extremely well with scaling, but I plan to do a lot of test to see how the "S" does the scaling. MS usually has a very good scaling in their systems, but still will run the same games a few times with the it on and off.

Samsung's scaling is great!

What's the first movie? Mad Max? The Revenant?

I bought The Revenant in 4k/hdr from M-Go(fandango now) and it was pretty great.

Revenant comes out the 31st of August here in Spain, have it preordered.

First move is Mad Max.

I have Mad Max, Man of Steel, Batman vs Superman Ultimate edition, Lego Movie and Both Star Trek Movies.

Also, now that we are in the 4k world, I use this site: http://realorfake4k.com/

To learn about the image quality of movies.

Now it suddenly is relevant to me, haha.

I'm really fascinated by how 4k exists from so long ago and how much of a mix of resolutions and the such movie makers use.

The original Ghostbusters is real 4k, for god's sake!

Nice! I love that movie! It's a sight to behold upscaled to 4k, can't wait to watch it on the S.

It isn't that 4k "exists" from long ago. It is that 35mm film has no "resolution", so you can digitize it at whatever resolution you want.

Pretty much Star Wars Ep IV could be rescanned at 4K if the films weren't in such a bad shape. Like the original Mad Max was http://realorfake4k.com/my-product/mad-max-1979/

Resolution came into play once computers were starting to be used to replace practical effects.

Oh, true, now you blew my mind again. It makes sense that film does not have resolution, so yeah.

Now a lo tof films are shot digitally and thus, they do have resolution, right?

For example, Lawrence of Arabia

http://realorfake4k.com/my-product/lawrence-of-arabia/

That movie is from 1962. I have the BD that was scanned at 1080p. Picture is perfect.

The UHD? They rescanned the 70mm film at 4k.

Yeah, they are shot digitally now. That is why I like how Nolan prefers film and he is right. If you record it on film, you can redigitize it at whatever resolution you want.

Thinking about ditching my XOne and buying a cheap 360 instead. Thing is, I have a really powerful gamer PC and since MS's announcement they going to release their XOne games on Windows 10 (like Recore and Quantum Brake, the only "exclusives" I'm interested in so far), it seems not making any sense to me. Multiplattform console only titles I tend to buy on PS4. When there's a PC version, I'm going for this.

I was pretty excited about the BC and they finally managed to release RDR. But no The Darkness, no Condemned 2, no GUN, no Lost Odyssey, no Mass Effect 2 and 3, no Dead Rising. So I think it's better to sell my XOne, get an old 360 instead for playing those titles and have my PS4 and PC for most recent games.

Curious to know if they'll be restocking the 2TB in the UK?

Sold out everywhere and nobody seems to know if they're getting more

I work at a hub warehouse for Argos and we haven't had any word yet

First time in my life I'm even considering to buy a console just because of the way it looks.

I stopped buying new hardware by the end of PS360 generation, and devoted myself to retrogaming and to complete my collection, following my wishlist without distractions. But, I don't know what it is, really, this thing is just so tempting.
Even crazier, the fact I could only think of a couple of games I'd want to buy for the system right off the bat
(Killer Instinct and Rare Replay)

Frankly, the more I read up on HDR the more I'm glad I decided to leave it for a couple of years for it to be fully fleshed out. I mean read this article: http://4k.com/news/a-clarification-...andard-sony-4k-hdr-and-other-hdr-types-14436/

What the hell Sony!? Way to confuse people already confused....

Well thanks Sony ... we've just bought the X8505C a few days ago. It's a 2015 4K TV and you far we're absolutely happy with it, but I already wondered why Marco Polo on Netflix doesn't look as impressive in HDR as I would've expected -_-

Just got a notification from the store that I should be able to pick-up mine today. I've got a watt meter so I'll do a quick test if I can indeed pick it up today.
