I believe part of the goal of From the Vault products is to provide a reward for Local Game Stores, by selling them a product with a relatively low suggested retail price which they can then sell to customers for a much higher price without raising too many eyebrows. In that sense, the limited release is a feature.

Again, I get this, but I feel like it's an outdated practice that's pretty inconvenient for the customer.

I think this is accurate as to what it exists for, I just think this is basically a bad idea and they should rethink how they approach it.

I dig the alternative art for Ob Nixilis and Nissa but man is that DD deck list disappointing. Conspiracy better be rife with Modern cards in need of reprint or they've basically wasted over a year of potential Modern reprint spots in various products. Conspiracy won't change that but it could alleviate some of the pressure on the market currently.

It's okay. Now I understand why you reacted that way.
But I'm pretty sure we've all talked about WotC trying to put nails in the coffins of Vintage/Legacy before. And with their very heavy hand in how Modern goes, further manipulation wouldn't be the most surprising thing to me there either.
However, I definitely hope for the best!

The reserved list effectively kills off Vintage and Legacy and that's why WotC has long since phased them out in favor of a format they can actually grow and monetize. Modern is the third most popular format, ahead of Standard, and it's only getting more popular with time. They're not going to "kill it off" or anything near that. Perhaps sometime next decade they attempt to create something similar to old Extended to be a bridge between Standard and Modern but it won't be at the expense of phasing out Modern.

I can understand it, but I also think it comes across as Modern Lite to me.

That would probably be the intent. It would be more approachable to the recently enfranchised player and would provide a smaller ramp into Modern. Charlequin pretty well summed up why Modern and Commander, as non-rotating formats, are essential to the longevity and health of the game in his response to SigmasonicX. As to the actual likelihood of this bridge format I'm a little skeptical at least for the next several years. Extended, from my understanding, was pretty unpopular and I don't think they're likely to return to it anytime soon.

Duel Deck is also pretty weak though the alt-art cards are good and good choices and the new art for the PWs is pretty good too.

This set includes a Planeswalker that is a 4 of in the most recent pro tour deck/best non Bant deck in standard, and a walker that sees play in various decks. I don't think we have ever had a duel deck where both walkers were strong standard cards (Elspeth vs Tezz being the closest one)

Yeah, people never liked Extended at any point after the dual lands rotated out of it, pretty much. Modern is a better curated format than any iteration of Extended and it has more of a clear identity compared to Standard, I think it would be a long time before that gets muddy and a shorter format could actually find a place to live.

Who's jumping in on Planechase Anthology?
http://magic.wizards.com/en/content/planechase-anthology-information

Planechase Anthology showcases cards, both Planar and normal, from Planechase and Planechase (2012 Edition). Planechase Anthology will contain the following:

Four ready-to-play 60-card decks from Planechase (2012 Edition), each with eight rare cards
86 oversized Planar cards
Four slide deck boxes
Oversize slide deck box
35 double-sided token cards
Special edition planar die
Four Spindown life counters
Strategy insert

I don't 'need' it since I have a phone app that has all of the Planechase system, which I can also stream/cast to my TV and play it that way. But with that said, I've always wanted the paper copy just to have something tangible.

I've seen some custom cards people have made that look pretty cool.

so, yeah. mono red is pretty amazing if you can force it.

i hated b/r vampires in triple innistrad because either i got color screwed or my ground vampires couldn't actually force through damage. now red has amazing late game finishers. the flowstone werewolf is beastly. it's almost always a 2 for 1. cast uncaged fury on it and win on the spot. the transform ability is just icing on the cake. the 3/2 that pings two creatures is also really good. it's uncommon though so less likely to see it. the hill giant that taps a land is underrated. it's an excellent way to prevent them from casting fatties until you cast yours or simply overwhelm them. bear is, as i mentioned before, solid. brazen wolves is one of the best three drops you can have. remember kragma butcher in theros draft? this is basically an upgrade.

i actually see zero reason to draft black anymore. black removal is just straight up garbage in edm. red has so many more options. the advantage black had in dead weight is completely gone with the kindle shock. with two packs you're going to see it more often too. i actually p1p1 the shock once. never drafted more than one copy and it still overperformed. shock is just that good.

black is so bad oh my god. i'm never drafting black again.
Dark Depths is still my favorite art in all of Magic. Really wish there was a large print I could get.
That reminds me, you used to like playing with the Dark Depths/Thespian Stage combo. Was that for Legacy or Commander or what?
I've been playing Legacy Lands and 4C Loam and I love it.

I put Dark Depths, Thespian Stage and Expedition Map in every EDH deck I build. It's a sickness. That said, I've sold every MTG deck I own except my Kozilek EDH.

When I play Legacy it's usually Reanimator or Shardless BUG.

Yeah, he made it to 3rd place in the scg classic a couple of days ago with that deck, the evolutions are much better than the nahiris that they were running.

That list was slightly different though.

I really like this format in limited. Very cool and well made.

New hearthstone out soon, so I might venture more into that for a bit.

New cards looking fun.

Kiora 2.0 needed a format with Mana Dorks in it that weren't crap/Better "Go Big" lands. Imagine her with Sylvan Caraytid, or Nykthos.

Whoever it was who said that Kiora 1/2 should have been in each other's standards was correct, considering how both have been mediocre.

Also, wasn't Voice in a similar situation to Brimaz? IE the decks that wanted him got pushed out and they shared standard with a card that basically murdered them.

Yep. That was me. Kiora 1 would be playable in this format, I think. Mostly because she's a good fog effect in Bant colors.

She'd also enable Landfall(lol Landfall in BFZ was so bad). It's the same reason why think the Nissa Sage Animist/Voice of Zendikar were switched(Sage Animist's abilities makes Ashaya, enables landfall, and turns your land into dudes, which works so well with BFZs themes vs Nissa VoZ's more generic "I love nature" theme)

Black is amazing in this set.
Olivia's Dragoon and Boon of Emrakul are fine commons, the rest are too slow. Black's uncommons are too clunky. Black's rares, I already passed Collective Brutality, Dark Salvation, Oath of Liliana, Stromkirk Condemned. Distended Mindbender is a sweet card though I will admit.

It's pretty nuts. Great removal at common and uncommon, good discard outlet at common, strong rares, pseudo Hymn, some good uncommon creatures.
Hymn? That's like the opposite of nuts. Look at all the black cards. They're mostly gimmicky cards that don't really do anything. How Black can win against the onslaught of green and white creatures is beyond me. Even blue has better creatures.

From my experience, black is the worst color in eldritch moon. I mean, green has better creatures and removal (which is crazy).

I respectfully disagree, except for the discard spell, which I fully admit is not good in limited. Although I must admit that for some reason Green seems to never be open, which is probably telling, now that I think about it.
As for Blue, I haven't been impressed, except for Emerge, which is fun.

Dark Salvation is probably the best removal spell in the set.

Interesting way to do the Pro Tour top 8 seeding. I think it's probably a good change.

No interest in talking Tron with me here from anyone, huh? I'll keep y'all updated when the tourny happens I guess? haha

Now the proud papa of a completed Tron deck.

Debating whether or not Emrakul 2.0 would be good in it....

Congrats on the deck :p, I'm about to finish up my RG Through the Breach deck. I don't think it fills any role better than Ulamog or Worldbreaker. Maybe in the sb for decks that can kill themselves like Ad Nauseum? Seems so slow for that though.

Hah, thanks. You're right, Emrakul is probably too slow for Ad Nauseum, but man, that would be the dream scenario kick in the balls. I'm gonna test it and see how it works in place of one Ulamog, but I'd guess it won't be great.

What's your Breach deck looking like?

isn't tron too tried and tested at this point to talk much about it?

Please, I've seen so many topics here get beat to death over the years I've been in this thread (if we ever start multiple pages on the reserved list again, please kill me). I'm actually kind of glad I didn't play the deck during the halcyon days of Eye of Ugin -- I'd probably really be missing it right about now.

Me bitching about getting locked out about Opposition is a recurring theme in this thread
