i meant in terms of character progression and interaction with NPCs and all that jazz, i feel i need something to hold me until DE: Mankind Divided drops, any recommendations GAF?

i have played and finished:
Mass Effect 1 to 3 with all DLC
DE:HR
Previous Fallout games except NV, tried the game but didn't really grab me
Previous Dragon Age games

im more interested on something that's not 10 years old, something that relatively new, so many games out im sure there's gotta be something i missed and someone greatly enjoyed it

I actually liked Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning more than any of Bethesda's games, but I'm in the minority there. Combat in that game is great, though way too easy.

People saying Dragon's Dogma are not reading the OP. It's a great game, but the story is dogshit.

Alpha protocol. It's best in the genre.

I'd second this, it's like Mass Effect with modern spys. Gameplay is janky at first, but it gets easier as you level up skills.

I enjoyed it more than the Mass Effect games, but I have weird tastes.

Notice you didn't say you've tried Skyrim?

Oh might also try KOTOR or KOTOR 2. (didn't realize these games are over 10 years old)

Give Dragon Age: Origins a shot! Great story and engaging gameplay. Its not the prettiest game but it has an interesting world and fantastic characters.

This games in my top ten somewhere!

EDIT: You already played them :p

posting from my phone... but honestly give new Vegas another try.. stick with it. Starts out a little off but the interaction and rpg elements far exceeded the other fallout games.. your missing out on game of the year quality here.

i second this. best modern "open world rpg" hands down

it didn't age too hot but go to nexus mods, add texture mods and boom. it'll be worth it i guarantee

Wait, you want good character progression and NPCs, yet couldnt get into NV? Thats like, top tier writing for that stuff. Just stick with it, you should really go back and try to.

I mean, there aren't that many games that are open world third/first person RPGs, period. If you're going to eliminate older games, then there are even less.

I suggest you give NV another shot.

I know you said you've previously tried NV and that it didn't grab you, but now that you've had a chance to go through Fallout 4, have you thought about trying again?

I didn't enjoy New Vegas a lot, either, when I first started playing the game, but revisiting it almost three years later did wonders for me. I grabbed some simple mods and I found that its quest-lines, characters, and overall sense of atmosphere were astounding.

Risen 1 is a good RPG, it was made by Piranha Bytes and is pretty similar to Gothic 2. Divinity: Original Sin is also a fantastic RPG.

It is a hard choice OP.

The Witcher 3: Everything good except Combat
Fallout 4: Everything bad except Combat

What do you really want? I could take The Witcher 3's combat for example but Fallout 4 was fine playing.

I highly recommend to try New Vegas if you liked Fallout 4.

Vampire The Masqueade Bloodlines, Stalker, New Vegas, Deus Ex Series. System Shock 2 is slightly outside your request, but I highly recommend playing it.

Morrowind modded is really good if you are looking for a really deep RPG.

Vampire Bloodlines, though keep in mind it has pretty shitty combat. It feels a lot like the Deus Ex games in pacing with the whole 3 or 4 hubs that you sort of master, has loads of peacful options like sneaking into places, hacking computers, etc.

I'd love to see more RPGs with the multiple small to medium sized hubs approach. They often tell their own interesting little stories in addition to serving the main arc. Deus Ex HR (and presumably MD) seems like one of the few modern games going for that style these days.

Dragon's Dogma or maybe one of the STALKER games?

I'm currently playing through Xenoblade Chronicles and it's been fantastic with character stories 10 hours in. Sidequests are typical JRPG sidequest though.

Man, that really wants me to play modded Morrowind again but the last time I spent more hours fiddling with mods and crashes then playing :p.

It's not open world and it doesn't have quite the same character progression, but I'd definitely recommend the Shadowrun games (Returns, Dragonfall, Hong Kong) as far as the story and NPC stuff. They have that absolutely nailed.

They might double up a bit in terms of setting with the upcoming Deus Ex, though.

Definetly give NV another try. It's miles better than Bethesdas output when it comes to NPC's and writing.

If it has to be relatively recent try Risen 3. I had fun with Two Worlds 2, too.

If it has to be both recent and open world then try Risen 3.

If you omit the "recent" criterion, play Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. It's the best game in the sub-genre.
If you omit the "open world" criterion, play Alpha Protocol. In terms of interaction with NPCs it is unparalleled.

Try Witcher 2, it's not open world but still has a great story, really good side quests and cheap as chips

Would also recommend this. I personally loved first Witcher too, but im not comfortable recommending it to you based on your post. It's quite "old".

I wouldn't recommend Dragon's Dogma if you want something like Witcher. Sure it propably has better combat, but besides that everything is pretty rough. Couldn't find any enjoyment in it after Witcher 3. But before anybody attacks me, I might give it another shot sometime. I believe when GAF says it's a good game, but it's not what i'm looking for in RPG:s. And seems like OP isn't either.

Would recommend Alpha Protocol, it does choice really well. Gameplay is quite janky though.
Also since you mentioned earlier Fallout games, Wasteland 2 is great!

edit: Give New Vegas another chance!
