Magic: the Gathering |OT8| Eldritch Moon - It's only a paper (and digital) moon

What other color would be pushed in eternal but blue? Red?

giphy.gif

Wait are you telling me red is a colour by itself?

We talked about this before I think, but having glowing weaponry seems like a bad idea for a ghost assassin.

I think I brought that up but at least this one isn't clad in what looks World of Warcraft armor.

This one

And contrary to popular belief the original assassins weren't dealing in subterfuge. They murdered people in plain sight and during the day as intimidation. The name is believed to originate from hashashin who got the name from consuming said hash before an assassination.

I'm surprised we aren't getting an epilogue to Eldritch Moon yet.

Magic Story - Laid to Rest
* On Fiora (plane of Conspiracy sets), the new planeswalker character, Kaya, is meeting up with Emilio Revari, a nobleman of middling influence, in a tavern.
* Flavor note: nobles are addressed as "don" on Fiora.
* Revari's new mansion that he inherited from his dead mother is haunted by a ghost. He wants Kaya to get rid of it. Kaya suspects the ghost is his mother's. He says the ghost's identity is none of her business, but relents and confirms it.
* Kaya plans and prepares these ghost hunts in detail before performing them.
* The day of the mission, she receives a letter with a black rose on it, from Marchesa the Black Rose. It's a sign that it's time for her "big job".
* She goes to the mansion and prepares for the ghost.
* She confronts the ghost, enhancing her daggers to affect the spiritual realm. To dodge an attack, she transfers her body to the spiritual realm to go through a wall. She "injures" the ghost.
* Kaya finds what the ghost was protecting: her dead body. And the stuff the ghost was destroying all connected to Emilio Revari.
* Kaya tells Emilio that after tonight, his mother's ghost will rest in peace. She brings him back to the mansion, into the room where he killed his mother. His mother's ghost kills him.

I assumed Kaya already saw the obvious fact that Emilio had his mother killed, so the fact that she was surprised made her feel a bit dumb, but I suppose that's just me having an out-of-universe perspective.

Planeswalker Profile - Kaya, Ghost Assassin
* Mysterious past.
* Thinks life is for the living, if someone had enough regrets to become a ghost, that's probably their own fault. If it's not, she's willing to help them.

This part actually sounds a lot like the Green side of the Green vs Black debate: "Kaya is a firm believer that life is for the living. The living should make the most of their lives and pursue what they want while they've still got time, and find their own peace before death."

Edit: But it could also be white where it's about keeping the natural order of the community and not upsetting it by refusing to die. And like, the card Rest in Peace.

she wraith walked through a wall, is a rogue and has purple daggers. Kinda screams UB but I never understood Orzhov so might be wrong.

B/W is more like "Guild of Assassins" stuff, where you follow a strict code of lawlessness, e.g. the Mafia, or you're the kind of assassin who only kills ghosts.

Assassination that works along with secrecy, manipulation and political intrigue are mostly blue/black.

Being a straight-up assassin for cash and nothing else is just mono-black.

An epilogue would probably lead too much into why we're going to Kaladesh and they probably want to stick to the set that's coming out first.

With Innistrad, it was always obvious what the hook was for going there - the Jacetice League is looking for Sorin. With Kaladesh, there's no rational reason to go there yet.

Fuck yeah black female

Yeah, she does look cool.

Anyway, binder question time.

1. Brand.
2. How many pockets per page (4,8,9,12).

FLGS had the Dex Binder 12 and 4 pocket binders and picked up blue one of each, and I really like both of them a ton.

You love spells way too much.

Not so much loving spells as hating creatures. Unless it's a creature that steals my opponent's creatures, or never ever dies. Or clones. I like clones a lot. Especially if they clone things that aren't creatures.

My ideal deck would have no win conditions other than planeswalker ultimates and my opponent's cards.
I recently sold a Vendilion Clique Duel Commander deck. The main problem is not having people to play against. Both in physical availability and eventual willingness.
do you perchance still have the list? I'm looking to get use out of my baby Jace and that seemed the most obnoxious thing I could do with him.

I mean, you could play Baby Jace but it wouldn't even be that good. It's basically just a bunch of Islands, common 2-mana counterspells and card draw. Jace can't even do anything with the most important spells. You could copy a Preordain or a tapper cantrip, I guess. I play clones but most people don't even do that. The only creatures most people play are Snapcaster Mage and Emrakul. Which you cast off 15 islands.

You just play Vendilion Clique on turn three and counter anything that kills it or races a 7-turn clock. It's the most consistent 100-card deck I've ever played. That said, Dig and Treasure Cruise got banned which suuuucks.

It does have one sweet alternate win-con, though:

Ah so it's a tempo deck, I expected a counter everything and steal/clone whatever isn't getting countered.

Well, it is, but a 3-mana evasive commander with flash will end the game eventually. If they don't play something that races it on turn three there's basically no reason not to play Clique.

Also, don't ever let Bow of Nylea resolve.

But yeah, if you want to build it it's not very hard. It's basically just every version of Essence Scatter, Cancel and Crippling Chill with all the 1 and 2 mana cantrips, the best instant-speed card draw and some random tutors like Muddle the Mixture, Tolaria West and Mystical Tutor. The deck doesn't have a ton of diversity.

lol that Tunnel Vision combo sounds hilarious. Anyone have thoughts about Grim Flayer's current price? I want to grab a couple of them for my delirium deck but I could probably wait if I should...

7 is overpriced. It will go to 4. It's basically Sylvan Advocate, except the buff clause is substantially worse and only actually applies in very specific decks.

Should be interesting to see how playable the Eldrazi are in Kaladesh Standard without the painlands. I wonder if they'll print real artifact mana.

Stupid question. Is now a good time to get back into the game? I play standard usually - have we rotated recently or is a rotation coming soon? Thanks xoxo

Rotation is in 2 months - September 30. Right now the metagame is dominated by a card that rotates out on September 30 and cards that specifically go with that card.

In other words, wait until Kaladesh releases in late September.

Rotations occur whenever the "Large" set releases in a block - this is always the Fall and Spring sets. The "Small" sets in Winter and Summer do not cause a rotation.

I'd say get in now. It might be just Bant Company all over the place, but as a new player, you're not looking to win, you're looking to learn. And right now, if you're not a spike, the format is a brewer's paradise. The mix of 4 different ideas (Dragons, Origins, Zendikar, Innistrad) makes it so that there are tons of different ideas out there. Also, outside of the cards that spikes want, the market for playable, fun cards is tanked. You can pick up cards you think are fun for pretty cheap.

Get in. Don't expect to win. Be miserable playing against Bant. But just make some fun stuff and learn how to play the different types of decks out there.

I mean, unless its a hyper-competitive store, the average FNM isn't overrun by Bant Company, true.

If you want to be ready for the next phase Standard, buy Tree of Perdition and Triskadekaiphobia before it takes off.
It's not going to happen, I know. Still tempted to build a kitchen table deck.

Dack Fayden was an A+ planeswalker so I pray they give as much love/power to Kaya as they did to him. It's only Legacy/Vintage legal, feel free to go wild! Give me another cubeable PW!

Also yes, its super cool this is the first Black Female planeswalker :)

she wraith walked through a wall, is a rogue and has purple daggers. Kinda screams UB but I never understood Orzhov so might be wrong.

All that stuff is covered entirely by black. To be blue she'd need something related to knowledge (sneaking in places to learn stuff) or perfection (pushing herself to advance her skills) or some other actively blue element. Innistrad's weird tribe aside, spirit stuff isn't particularly blue at all -- typical ghost stuff is W/B.

I felt like her sense of justice showed some white in her.

Possibly Esper?

Yeah, having a specific code and making choices based on what's "right" is definitely white-leaning.

If she's any three color combo it's Esper, yeah.

Yeah, Dack was clearly pushed to be eternal playable and hopefully the same would apply here.

Pro Tour in 24 hours!

I'm kinda sad that Brian Kibler isn't even pretending he still cares about Magic and isn't attending.

Going to miss a good amount of the PT due to the weird ass hours but at least I'll be able to watch the entire top 8 several hours of Bant Company mirrors.

Went through some older cards to see what, if any, I could sell at GenCon this weekend.

My incredbilby shitty just for shits and giggles squirrel deck had three Gaea's Cradles in it. How come none of you guys told me that's a $240 card???

Kaya is almost certainly blue. Everything about her seems to be calculating and precise. Her other colors are kind of up in the air. Based on the story, any other color(s), except red, could work. The mercenary angle has her leaning toward black. But there are hints in the story that also point toward white and/or green. I'm guessing she's definitely blue/black, but whether or not she has a third color and what it might be is up in the air.

One thing to keep in mind is that she kills Brago, who, from what I recall, was mostly beloved in the story of Conspiracy 1. So even if her actions in this story don't feel black, she's clearly still got it in her.

It's also important to note that, if they want her to be eternal playable, like Dack, having her be tri-color would decrease the chances. So if they set out with that goal, she might just be blue-black in this incarnation, even though her character might support more colors in future printings.
