Where are the Arcade Racers?

Last gen, we had an overabundance of fantastic arcade racers: Burnout Paradise, Split/Second, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, Motorstorm, Blur...the list goes on.

This gen, there's been, what? Need for Speed: Rivals? And...that's been kind of it. Arcade racers are my jam; the lack of these titles saddens me to no end. Last night, I read that Criterion cancelled their newest racer in favor of something Star Wars-related. I hope the arcade racer genre isn't going the way of the beat 'em up. *sigh*

Drift Stage is on the way, and from the time I've spent with the Kickstarter backer builds, it's something very special.

Beyond that there's stuff like The 90's Arcade Racer (which I have no idea when that's coming out, bloody Nicalis innit) and Racing Apex (no idea on the status of that).

These are literally all the same concept. :(

Forza Horizon and Driveclub are more hybrid titles than pure arcade, but they're really, really good.

They make me miss PGR4 a little less.

But I would really like some re-releases on digital platforms of games like Outrun 2, Wipeout HD (where is the 4k version Sony? Are you dumb?), Sega Rally, and so on.

Publishers don't want money.

Yup. I'm close to buying a PS2 because I miss Burnout 3 a lot. :( (and SSX 3)

I have some hopes for Wreckfest, being a fan of the Flatout games, however. But even if that game turns out good, there is still not nearly enough arcade racing material.

I still believe that Split/Second had the makings of a god-tier franchise. It's a shame it didn't catch on because the concept was absolutely genius.

Raw Thrills is making Cruisn' Blast (published by Nintendo), which comes out later this year. I wonder if there will be an NX port.

Completely agree. Fantastic game and very underrated. BLUR and Split/Second are my favourite arcade racers.

I also would like to know where 90's Arcade Racer is?

I really wish we'd get Ridge Racer 8 but Namco doesn't seem to like the idea. Maybe the Vita RR bombed or something. We have never gotten a full-fledged RR game with Trophies, etc. and all the trimmings.

The racing genre has gone by the wayside.

I had forgotten how many original racing IPs we got last gen.

And it is enough.

Bike expansion, VR expansion. Amazing graphics on top of that.

Not even close.
Don't get me wrong, Driveclub is my favourite racer since PGR 4 but it isn't a replacement for true arcade racers.

I think we have to give up hope for RR8. I don't get it though, I think there would be a market for enough profit. It would look amazing on PS4(p).

So many of these suggestions are Steam games. I don't have (nor do I want) a Steam account. I should've clarified in the OP that there are no real console arcade racers on the horizon.

At least two out of five of the games in your list flopped hard (regardless of their quality).

And Motorstorm is basically dead to not-so-stellar sales.

I guess that's a good answer regarding why the genre is under-represented this gen.

Burnout Revenge, Split Second and Blur we my favs last gen, only racing game I've cared for this gen is Mario Kart. Horizon looks awesome on my X1 but its just racing which is no fun for me, i need a little twist with my racers.

Actually it's called Cruis'n Redline and here is footage of this Nintendo arcade racer:

Here's a Polygon article on the location test of the game. Seems Nintendo/Raw Thrills are rebooting the whole series.

It would be great to see it on NX, but I doubt it comes.

Yeah I want some big-budget AAA linear arcade racers. Indie stuff is fine, but I want the big guns. But after the likes of Pure, Split Second and Blur all flopped, we shouldn't be surprised sadly. The racing genre is pretty much dead outside of first parties, Codies and indies.

Did you play Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed? It's not so much a kart game, as it is an Arcade Racer with kart-game rules.

Then that's down to you. That's where a lot of these types of games exist now.

Some of these games might get console ports eventually, but indie developers and Kickstarter are the main thing keeping the genre going, and PC is the easiest and cheapest for them to develop for.

I miss them dearly. It's a real hole in the lineup of modern video games for me. Nearly 3 years in and I still haven't played a racing game on PS4.

I keep the sadness at a distance with:
- Outrun 2 (PS3)
- Daytona USA (PS3)
- Burnout Paradise (PS3, about to finish on PC making my 4th clear)
- Ridge Racers (PSP on Vita. Vita version is fucking shit)
- SEGA Rally 1995 (Japanese PS2 version)

The reason is purely sales. Games cost lots to make > nobody buys them > game doesn't get a sequel

Not to pick, but I have to laugh at saying "I don't want to join that thing that has all those games I want to play."

Well that's a strange position to have.

All I've heard about previous Cruis'n games was that they were crap but this footage reminds me a lot of the Excite Truck game from the Wii, which was excellent. Monster Games don't seem to be making racing games anymore which is a shame, but I guess I'll hope for this to get ported one day.
