I've been struggling all day to contain the hype, but I do think this definitely has the potential to be "the next big thing" as long as they can keep the battery life long enough and it's enjoyable to play on the go.

Yes some of you are disappointed that it's not going to run 4k games at 120fps, but Nintendo was never going to build this to go head to head with Sony/MS, they've lost that war at this point.

You are exaggerating on all counts.

Do we know the resolution yet though? Obviously it's not going to be 4K, but 1080p isn't really wild.

The Wii U rendered at 1080p and by all accounts the Switch is more powerful, but we're now at the stage where some people think the Switch will only be able to render 720p on your tv? Do people honestly think Nintendo have decided to suddenly go to 720p output on a tv.

And to be fair why were people expecting state of the art technology from Nintendo. They made it clear that's not their objective.

Best prepare that 4K OLED you got for some upscaled-ass 720p mario, brother.

We don't know yet.

Yes we do. Nintendo merged their handheld and console hardware decisions years ago, when development on this started in full force. Iwata was also saying at least a year or so ago that they were looking to consolidate their development onto one platform.

This is THE Nintendo platform going forward.

lol

I'd actually be ok with that. Not happy but it wouldn't put me off.

I'd be shocked if they've gone from a 1080p output on the Wii U to 720p with the Switch though.

The hardware by all accounts is more powerful than the shield right? And that was capable of 1080p.

There's no way Nintendo would charge to play online...right?

I think so. But, this is only the beginning.

I think within a few years, we'll see a "Switch Mini", which will basically be a Switch with a ~4" screen and no dock. Portable only, but can still play all Switch games.

MK8 looks great on my 4K tv and that's 720p

I can't believe they spent so much time showing Skyrim though, I ran that on a 9800gt... I guess it shows they want 'hardcore' gamers now at least

Really curious to get a look at its functionality beyond merely playing games. At the various least I'm hoping for a zippy UI, at most a competent tablet, perhaps even compatible with google play books.

Everyone else saw a good ol' pupper. If I get a dog I may name it Switch

Points one and two are just you saying you don't want a portable gaming console. This may not be the device for you, and that's fine. Point three is just pure speculation that I don't care to address at all.

Strangely enough, despite my posts this morning, I'll get a lot of use out of this device.

But purely speaking from a "I want Nintendo to be successful" point of view, I don't think they went about the hybrid thing the right way. I just think people will see the Switch with the controllers attached and think "It's a WiiU again?"

I have zero interest in this thing at the moment, but I'm glad to see Nintendo still trying to innovate.

Has there been any speculation as to pricing as of yet?

I actually think they'll support HDR for gaming and 4K output for video. But that's part logic and part wishful thinking.

Games should be 900p docked.

So guys, Nintendo should have hired me when doing the Wii U, just check out what I proposed over at a norwegian forum before my account got authorized here. You wont understand what ive written, but just check out the pictures from five years ago:

I basically proposed a very similar device to the Switch to be able to gap the 3DS and WIi, and also appeal to both traditional users and motion control lovers. Pretty neat looking back.

Yeah there's nothing to stop the machine supporting 4k. Obviously games would use perhaps 1080p framebuffers, but there's no reason the console couldn't technically output (and upscale to 4k res).

I don't think it's likely though, but 4k is more likely than being limited to 720p output.

This thing will be 1080p in my opinion. It makes no sense to have more powerful hardware than the Wii U yet be unable to output 1080p.

I also think the lcd display on the switch will be 1080p. Yes big jump from the 3ds and gamepad but "I BELIEVE" lol.

Also, the person who coined the term 'Joycons' needs to get fired immediately. That's probably the worst name for a mainstream gaming peripheral i've ever heard.

Amazing. You beat my prediction by a full 3 years.

Like three games output in 1080p on the Wii U. Wind Waker HD is a port of a gamecube game and still had massive framerate drops running in 1080p on the Wii U.

What if that skyrim footage was just the switches's ability to be used as a device for streaming games from your PC, Or other console and wasn't running on the switch at all?

Not sure what I think of Nintendo Switch. It's certainly not what I was expecting from Nintendo (despite the leaks) and it's not what I was hoping for from a home console perspective.

The portability is completely wasted on me. I haven't seen exact dimensions yet but it's looking quite large and I imagine battery life will be relatively poor. It's looking bigger than the Vita and that was pushing the limits of what I consider comfortably portable.

The detachable controllers are interesting but I'm expecting them to feel like the Wii controllers (horizontally) which is not ideal.

That said, I've bought every Nintendo console due to some combination of Mario Kart, Smash Bros or Mario platformers, and the concept is not completely awful - so I guess I'm interested.

I'm keen to see the price and how they approach online play, friends/parties and the online store.

Again with tales from the ass. Are you in a campaign or what?

It could be 768p or 900p or 1080p. If Nintendo made SM3DW running at 720p on Wii U, for sure they can make a Mario running at any of those resolution on a hardware that is conservatively speaking at least 3 times more powerful than Wii U. It all depends on what effects, AA and such.

I'm talking about the resolution the console can output at.

The Xbox One S is capable of outputting 4k resolution right? But battlefield uses a 900p framebuffer.

The Switch will 100% output at least 1080p. I don't doubt that there will be a variety of different native framebuffers used in games, some running at 1080p, 720p, 900p and whatever else a developer deems appropriate to get the best balance between performance and image quality.

If the lcd display is 720p that doesn't mean the hardware itself, i.e the Nvidia SOC is not capable of running games at a higher resolution.

It's amazing to me how narrow minded gaming fans can be sometimes. A lower priced, less powerful, more experimental and social device can co-exist with the more traditional consoles. It's okay, folks. Embrace diversity, embrace new ideas.

It looks kind of interesting, although I would probably use it just as a home console for 95% of the time. Glad that it has finally been revealed.

Ah, right.

I think if Nintendo were to be so inclined to do so, that they could make a decent VR device using the Switch as their screen.
It would work similar to Samsung's Gear VR, and Nintendo could even release a higher resolution Switch model for better IQ.
We have no idea if the Switch has any type of gyroscopic tracking, right? If it does, I think we could be looking at our possible future Nintendo VR device.

Nobody wants to hear this right now, but it will never get the third party support that PS4 and XB1 have. There won't be many cross-platform releases.

It's pretty telling that they showed Skyrim, a last-gen port, rather than a game exclusive to this generation.

But the hype train does not tolerate rational thought and critical thinking.

I get that and I mostly agree with you, but I also think it's telling that the first third party game Nintendo is highlighting is from a Western publisher that's never really supported Nintendo at all. It's like a statement of intent. I think you couple that with Splatoon being featured as the "one last thing" over a brand new 3D Mario, and you seem to have a Nintendo that has different priorities than in the past. Or at least a Nintendo that has a better grasp of what people actually want to see from it as a platform holder.

i can't believe it's actually coming in March. i guess that one guy on here was right!

looks very cool. i haven't bought a new console since SNES days and may get one of these. new Mario game looks so dreamy.
