Skyrim SE and Dishonored 2 review copies will ship one day before release.

If you loved the first game, I don't see any reason to doubt Dishonored 2. That's just me, though.

I did love the first one, but they can still drop the ball in level design, AI, power balance and characterization.

That being said, I am really hoping the game has been balanced in a way that doesn't openly discourage using the powers. At the end of the day, if you wanted to do a pacifist run, you really could only use like three of your powers.

Lol. It defeats the whole point of the review really. People want to buy games on release. If there is no review then they have to buy the game blind. Don't like it? Well too bad, store already has your money. (If it's physical)

At least with steam you can get a refund.
That's on them. It's quite easy to wait a couple of weeks.

I'm not scared for Skyrim because well, the game is already critically acclaimed. I already know it's a good one. The 30FPS on consoles is horseshit, but unless it's PS3 levels of Skyrim bad, the port so far looked pretty good from the vids we have.

Dishonored 2 we'll see. I expect it to be stellar from what I've seen. This might be Doom all over again. But the thing is...We know straight from Bethesda ( I don't remember the interview, someone help here) that they thought the single player wouldn't go over well with reviewers.
Whoa the console versions are 30?? yikes

Reading through the first page, I'm getting the impression that people are generally more tolerant of this, and willing to give Bethesda the benefit of the doubt, versus Mafia 3 and 2K. I wonder why that is.

I mean, I guess I just won't buy either day one for sure now.

Not like I was planning to despite this news but.

Release day review embargos and stuff like shipping the review copies only one day before release are terrible practices.

There is an ever-increasing incentive from publishers in the form of freebies to pre-order their games but they don't have the confidence in their product to let reviews out ahead of release.

I just want some well-informed outside opinion on the content before I lay down my money, why is that asking so much.

In the case of Skyrim though, at least my copy is free thanks to the upgrade program. I do thank Bethesda for that because they really didn't have to be that kind.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
The only thing I am concerned about are loading times.

On Skyrim ? There have been videos which show load times approx 5~8 seconds. This IIRC was going from the world into a town. I don't remember if they had timings from towns into the world map.

Keep in mind that Dishonored 2 has a "play one day early" pre-order bonus. It just means the game comes out one day before the announced release date because you can still "pre-order" during the early access period and get the game.

So for Dishonored 2 this is a release day embargo.

Pretty terrible though not surprising if it becomes standard. Easy enough to wait for a lot of people but that's what the pre-order focused marketing is supposed to convince you not to do. You can watch Youtubers they gave early copies to, but you have to keep in mind these people don't really have a code of ethics and could be paid off.

So basically the publishers are using all measures to get your money first before you know anything about the quality of the game, as they probably should as a business. Don't pre-order games people, no matter what fancy trinkets they give you to entice you.

Well for Bethesda it seems like this will be their policy for all their games moving forward, regardless of how well reviewed they expect them to be. With Mafia it was pretty clear early on that the game was a bit of a mess.

Maybe, but I'm not looking into negative possibilities (As slim as they could be). I know a lot of people were disappointed by games like No Man's Sky, but I don't see any reason to be doubtful just because of few disappointing games.

I could be naive, though, so who knows.

I don't even understand how this policy benefits Bethesda itself under the assumption that the games are good (or at least they have faith in their product), are they really seeing significant sales of people putting more trust in them and being impatient and not waiting for reviews? It's the only thing that makes sense. There must be some significant sales produced by impatience similar to Denuvo because it pushes impatient pirates to buy it instead of waiting for it to be cracked.

They want the day one patch to be ready. Doom is a great game, they knew it was great, still held it.

Definitely a bullshit line from Bethesda "we want everyone to experience the game at the same time!".

Truth is, Bethesda knows that even the mere possibility of lukewarm reviews impacting some early sales is not a risk they're willing to take as a company. That's the reality of the situation.

I think BECAUSE they got away with it and ended up with a positive result with Doom that they've seen that as a green flag for this, but yeah, absolute corporate bullshit.

I suppose it makes sense they'd do it since DOOM suffered no repercussions from the same thing.

Still shitty for reviewers and consumers.

No, you very clearly wish they didn't exist, and figure that mailing out copies one day before release is the way to get reviews out the absolute latest, because otherwise reviewers might try to source early copies from retailers.

You're only even bothering commenting on this because you want to mitigate the bad PR of doing so as much as possible.

This guy right here.

He gets it.

I also don't understand why people reviewed the Silent Hill HD collection

A critical difference here is I believe the Skyrim remaster was handled internally, right? When remasters are done internally they're generally exactly what they're supposed to be. (Emphasis on the word "generally")

Definitely expecting this to run better than the Silent Hill remaster for sure, but yeah, emphasis on the word "generally". Anything could happen, and judging by how Fallout 4 ran on PS4/Xbox One, I wouldn't be so sure about this release.

Skyrim is free - I expect nothing. If you are stuck on console having to rebuy it... definitely wait and see though.

Dishonored 2 -don;t break my heart. I am waiting on it though. Nothing bad surprises me in 2016. Gotta stay frosty. I am at a point when a game I want gets pushed to 2017 I am thrilled because maybe the 2016 curse won't be on it.

Until games all get 6 week delays to make the day 1 patch version the review build , this is the way things will be. Honestly, given how much stuff changes with the atypical day 1 patch, a review done prior to it's release might not be indicative of the overall quality of a game either...

So, one way or another, the game critics will review SHOULD be the same thing you'll be able to buy on a disc. I mean, I suppose this is better but I can see why it also looks bad .

I guess publishers are hoping to shift away from the traditional review standard in favor of streamers and word of mouth.

Bethesda have the right to send out review copies for their own game whenever they want.
Obviously, you guys have the right to not buy anything until the reviews are out and you know for a fact the game doesn't suck.

I don't see a problem?

Meanwhile a lot of streamers already are in possession of the game thanks to Bethesda. Are (screaming, yelling) streamers more important than reviewers?

Kinda strange situation.

No, they can wait. You don't have to buy a game day one regardless of how much you're excited

Out of curiosity, has there been any game that got reviewed on launch day that were critically panned? I'm kinda curious on the worries that some people have regarding those two games.

Besides Mafia 3 and No Man's Sky, of course

Remember that these dudes also already sent preview copies of Skyrim SE to YouTubers a week early.

Review outlets are not as high on the totem pole anymore to Bethesda in their product launch strategy in terms of access.
