Cameron Lee leaves Bioware, wants to raise new born in big city

http://www.cameronleeblog.com/leaving-bioware/
Since Inquisition shipped I’ve been the Lead Producer of BioWare’s first new IP since the Mass Effect trilogy and it’s been an amazing experience to work with the other leaders and the entire team. The new IP continues on with its development, shepherded by a leadership group with a vision that I think will change the way people experience BioWare games. Everyone working on the New IP is amazingly talented and their work continues to exceed even the lofty expectations at BioWare.
This is a pretty hard thing to do, but it’s the right thing at this stage of my life. My wife and I are expecting our first child and we’d like to do that in a bigger city.

He was producer on Dragon Age Inquisition.

The talent leaving Bioware is saddening. They were so influential in making gaming my favorite form of entertainment. Now they feel like A band with retaining the keyboardist yet keeping the group name.

Most people want to raise their kids in smaller places, not that Edmonton is a sprawling megacity or anything but it strikes me as a weird place to leave to raise kids somewhere bigger.

It seems like 75% of the news we hear about BioWare is more or less key people leaving them. Then again he was producer of DA:I and that game was an absolute abomination imo, so by that standard not much was lost game-design-wise.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.

Halt your tongue, heathen lest you make a mockery of the unanimous 2014 GotY (over such forgettable titles such as Mario Kart 8, Tropical Freeze and Bayonetta 2)

We are moving to raise our child in a big city.....why?

Would imagine his wife going hell naw you're not going to be working in AAA industry anymore when we're raising a child (and quite right). And looking for a new career, it's better to live in a bigger city.

I'm not entirely sure what the distinction is between a city of almost 1 million and a city with 5 million, beyond more people and more buildings.

Good luck to him. Personal life always comes first if you can make a choice about these things.

Edmonton is a crappy city, but in will be a very different city with all the construction going on in 5 years. But yes, defninitely not the best city for any entertainment industry including games, movies, and tv shows. The uselss goverment should take advantage on the current high vacancy rate in downtown and cheap lease to offer tax break to lure those industry to diversify the economy like they keep saying but did very little about it. I am surprised Bioware is still in this city.

I've been living in Edmonton for 2.5 years and I can't imagine why I would need to live in a bigger city. After a certain point, you only see the downsides of a big city, IMO. I have all the amenities and entertainment I could possibly need here.

It can get fucking cold though.

As someone who moved from a tiny town in TN to just a tiny bit south of Seattle around eight years ago due to a stint in the military I can empathize. I had the chance to move back to TN for free when I got out of the military but my wife and I both decided that WA is a better place to raise children then a tiny town full of narrow minds. Bigger cities mean more experiences, more culture, more opportunities, and just more worthwhile living in general. More power to him, I hope he enjoys being a parent as much as I do :)

yeah, I think 1 million population is a good population, I visit Vancouver very often and sometime find the city too crowded and disgusting. At the same time, CHEAP FOOD.

A bigger city? Even I feel that my city is a bit too busy... with a population of about 150.000

Edmonton is absolutely huge compared to any German city. When I look at the medieval city I live in, I couldn't image living in a even more crowded environment.

I wish the best for Cameron Lee. He worked on my favorite game IPs and I thank him for that.

Looked it up on Wikipedia, Edmonton is Canada's fifth largest municipality? Hardly seems like some kind of rural backwater that you'd quit your job to get away from. Good luck to him though.

There are a few German cities bigger than Edmonton. Berlin, Munich, Hamburg are all way bigger by population and a few others are too if you take the urban area. It's just they don't have the concentrated set of skyscrapers.

I would classify it as probably the most Generic North American city out there.

Not really old enough to have a cool history.

The local terrain is prairie...so kind of flat and boring

Big enough to not have a small town feel.

but not big enough to have large city issues. (Mind you , that has changed over the last 20 yrs.)

and yet, everything would feel familiar to anyone used to Canadian/American cities.

I classify it as a great place to live, but I don't want to retire here.
