Half-Life 3: 10 years of not playing the most essential sequel in history

It's been almost a full decade since the Half-Life series last showed life, with the surprising, even shocking conclusion of Half-Life 2: Episode Two. And surely, we thought, Valve wouldn't leave such a stunning cliffhanger untended for long. Surely, that heart-wrenching finale meant that Valve had a proper finish already cooked up, and the infamously long Valve-time waits between games would be a thing of the past.

Surely.

The near-ten years since then has not resulted in either Episode 3, or a proper Half-Life 3. But much has happened. Through both official channels and clever hoaxes, our hopes have been raised up and then dashed on the rocks, again and again.

Rockefellers. Skull and Bones. Microsoft. Al Qaeda. A Cabal of Bankers. The melting point of steel. What do these things have in common? Wake up sheeple, the landfill wasn't even REAL!
At this point they should skip 3 and do the 4th

These threads are depressing.
Remember the first time you finished Ep 2 and couldn't wait for the conclusion?
Now look at the situation.
Can't believe it never happened.

At this point doing a direct sequel to HL2 Episode 2 that takes up directly after that cliffhanger probably doesnt make much sense since the game is a decade old and lots of people who played it probably aged out of gaming or died.

A sequel would probably need to be a soft reboot or spinoff.

I'll be upset if HL3 happens. No matter what they put out will be too little too late.

Also, I want Portal 3 more.

You know what...at least Shenmue and The Last Guardian fans had hope because they knew there was a chance. With Shenmue we knew it was more funding than anything. With TLG it was long dev but we kept being assured it was being made.

Half Life 3 is dead.

I pre-ordered Half Life 2 (I've still got the tin), completed it over a weekend but found the Episodes so much more difficult when they came out.

Steam took off and then Gabe Newell decided to say farewell to game development altogether.

Maybe we could had HL3 if there was no Steam, or it wasn't such a breakout success.

One was an awesome achievement, but is this just a long running joke? Do people really want more of this that badly. 2 really wasn't that great beyond the physics IMO.

I don't even want it anymore. I don't believe that Valve is capable of making a game without jamming it full of all kinds of hats and chests and every other thing they can think of to encourage kids into a life of gambling addiction.

Next year E3 when Valve has its press conferences showcasing the 4k steam machine, Left 4 Dead 3 and Portal VR.

To be honest, at this point I just don't care anymore. No point in holding onto this. No faith in valve anymore. At least we'll always have hl2 as a classic.

At this point I feel like, Valve would make the most viral release just putting in into Steam without any announcement...

And somehow, someone would notice it after 2 seconds...

Couldn't PC Gamer have at least waited until actual ten years had passed to do an article like this?

Anyway, VR seems like the perfect opportunity for a worthy 'bringing new things to the medium' leap that each prior HL game has done (and that Valve always bemoaned was why they felt so worried about making a sequel). So I was surprised that Chet straight up said last year that HL3 isn't something they're working on for VR.

I still care, I love the series. One of my absolute favorites. But I don't think Valve is shitting on my soul by not making another. It's cool, there are plenty of games to play.

Day 1 when they surprise release it on Steam like Beyoncé.

I think both are overrated. 2 easily is less rough around the edges and was easier to take in or beat in a few sittings.

Doom 3 and Hl2 are nothing compared to far cry 1 which shits on them till the end.

I remember back on the Steam User forums when I was telling people to stop getting their hopes up for Half-Life 2 Episode 3 at every E3.

Those poor sods.

My favourite games of all time.

But 3 will never happen. There is nothing they can do that could even faintly live up to the hype it would generate.

Only way I could see HL3 coming now is as a SteamVR exclusive to get people to buy the Vive and in to the SteamVR storefront. Valve has no interest in doing regular single player games anymore unless they can somehow fill it with loot chests/hats/"free to play" gambling stuff they inject in all their multiplayer titles, which would not fit the world of HL at all. Thus, VR is probably the best chance it could happen.

Valve is more interested in selling virtual hats then making quality games these days and we just have to accept it and move on.

For me though I really want Portal 3 more. Or at the very least a current gen 60fps port of Portal 1+2 with access to user generated maps for Portal 2. I really think the community on consoles would be huge for this.

I dunno man, they seem to be interested in making quality games...just not the games you want.

I played ep. 1 & 2 for the first time ever just last year. Really enjoyed it and it seems to hold up quite well, despite its age.

Really wish Valve still made big AAA games.

Do we know if they are working on it at least?

Last year for the 8th anniversary of Orange Box releasing they "leaked" text files regarding Half-Life 3 into a Dota 2 update. Press call it a leak, but to me it seems an extremely obvious nod to the more desperate HL fans that tear into all updates looking for clues, especially since it was the day before / of the aniversary. They get to hint at ideas without having to speak about it or confirm anything.

http://www.valvetime.net/threads/what-are-the-leaked-hl3-txt-and-rpg-txt-files-all-about.246431/

Basically suggests there will be Quests, Ziplines and other stuff. VR stuff is mentioned also.

One thing is for sure, if an Ep3 or HL3 ever do release, the developer commentary for it should be really amazing. Talk of development hell, worried that it wouldn't live up to expectations, and a number of other things.

since the ending of epiode 2 was really bad, i'm ok with not playing the game is they don't feel like making it..the gameplay of those games was excellent, but that kind of exellecy is reached only when there's passion behind a project
