NES Classic Edition Thread: Now You're Playing With Power* *Sold Separately in Europe

Anyone have one of those mayflash adapters to plug an NES controller into a Wii Remote? Does that work on this?

Someone said a while ago in this thread or another that they owned one and tried it to no avail. They must have really tweaked the input on this thing to screw with the existing knockoffs.

Anyone who says these games don't hold up. Rubbish. They're so simplistic yet so very good. Except Ice Climbers. Fuck that game.
Yeah, the selection is very good
except Ice Climber (Nintendo should have picked Blaster Master instead).

lol I always loved Ice Climber as a kid. It must be nostalgia because I still enjoy playing it once in a while. I think I've mastered the bad controls over my lifetime.

These have probably already been touched on, but:
- if you buy the extension cables (I got the insignia ones from Best Buy for $10 each), use a small screwdriver to remove the plastic tab (make sure you put the screws back in) to allow you to still be able to plug in a second controller. Easy 5 min or less (info and pic from http://www.usgamer.net/articles/your-guide-to-the-best-nes-classic-edition-accessories)
nes-mini-accessories-spot-02.jpg

- if you use a wii classic controller, pressing "home" does the same thing as the reset button. Even playing 1 player games, I press "home" on the 2nd controller to reset since I'm generally far away from the system

i've had many of these games available on other systems for 10 years now but have never played them as much as i played them this weekend.

hours and hours bouncing between games with my son. there's just something about using the real controller and quality emulation.

I have to say I really like having the console next to us when playing so you can hit reset easily. That's a palpable feel to it akin to putting one more quarter in the arcade machine. Granted the classic controller home button offers the same function but I really like the NES controller.

I can come up with another ~30 without too much licencing hassle.

TETRIS(!)
Rygar
Rad Racer
Mega Man 1 & 3
Kung Fu
Contra
Castlevania 3
River City Ransom
Bad Dudes
Blades of Steel
Jackal
Golf
Kickle Cubicle
Adventure Island 1 & 2
Bomberman
Strider
Ninja Gaiden 2
A Boy and his Blob
Tecmo Super Bowl
Little Nemo: The Dream Master
RC Pro Am
Crystalis
Dragon Warrior(s)

Work for licences for Ducktales, TMNT, and Batman.

Probably throw Mario 1-3 and Zelda 1 & 2 just to get 1st time buyers in. No problem with duplicating the core titles to make it appealing to non-1.0 owners.

Give it up, NES Contra is never coming back due to the evident plagiarism of Schwarzenegger.

Mind blown! Once I get an extension cable I don't think I'll ever be using the standard controller again for this reason.

I am enjoying this a lot but it does seem like something of a missed opportunity. The short cable thing is ridiculous but it's a real shame there is no way to purchase more games and you would have thought that 'achievements' and NES remix-style challenges could have added so much value for not much more effort.

I hope someone comes up with a method to mod this for SD card support within the same UI (which is great).

i think the option to buy more games or remix them is missing the point of the product

Good list, and I agree that Mario and Zelda should always be a part of these things. Even if I owned a 1.0, I wouldn't want to have to switch units to access those titles.

Only on the cover of the US version. The title screen portrait is 'inspired' but not anything too egregious, as the Japanese version's cutscenes prove. And the MSX version is on Japanese Virtual Console, and Contra 1 was released as a bonus in Contra 4 in 2007.

Really we don't know why it hasn't been available. I'd be guessing it's most likely because of some flashes that trigger epilepsy, but the source code is lost so they can't edit it (like they did with Zelda II).

I really want something like this that is basically just a portal to the virtual console.

I love this thing and it's really my only complaint (besides the criminally short controller cables) that I can't put more games on here. I know why but I'd have gladly payed $100 instead of $60 for one with an expandable library.

Anyone noticing input lag on any games? Mega Man 2 is my go to example on the Wii U VC. It plays great on this thing so if that's a result of the controllers being wired I'm all for wires. on the Wii U I often feel like I dropped input or mistimed a jump and it feels bad. On this everything feels solid and maps to my actions like I would expect it too.

Hooked it up and had a play earlier, this thing really is the business and people weren't kidding about the Wii U's NES virtual console paling in comparison.

It won't replace my physical NES collection - a lot of my favourite NES games aren't on here, but £50 for 30 amazingly emulated classic games with the shell/authentic controller is a steal. Let's hope the supply can meet the demand going into the holiday season.

As for the Playing with Power book, save your money guys. The slipcover design is really neat but the quality of the actual product and the contents left me really disappointed.

I like the Playing With Power book. It's like a hardcover, longer edition of Nintendo Power (it even reuses some Nintendo Power content). All the same, I'm sure it will just sit on my shelf forever, unless I want to examine the Metroid maps.

The one I ordered from bestbuy.com still hasn't shipped. I figured since they initially quoted me a delivery date of Friday it might not ship until Monday or possibly even Tuesday, but I'm getting worried.

Ordered the damn thing well before they went OOS, too.

Uh. There are no flashes in Contra that are worse than any other NES games. And if you've been following the VC scene even slightly, you'd know that the patching of games wasn't done with the original source code (lol), even for Zelda II. They didn't recompile the games. The original unaltered ROM file is present, and there is a second separate file that contains changes to be patched in memory to fix bugs, remove flashes, etc.

The MSX version doesn't have the problematic Schwarzenegger art. Contra in Contra 4 was Konami's own doing. Nintendo probably doesn't want to risk dealing with it on its own services, especially since they show the boxart which is even more troublesome. Contra 4 didn't show the box art.

Tons of missed opportunities with this thing but let's just be realistic, this was simply a cash-grab product to stay relevant through this holiday season since they don't have anything else for Wii U and the only launch left for this season is Pokemon Sun/Moon. That's why after thinking for a while about it, I don't think they are gonna continue with this type of products such as SNES Mini and stuff. NES Mini was simply an extra--ordinary product.

I bought a couple of the controllers from the official Nintendo store for RRP with next-day delivery and just got my despatch e-mail.

Fingers and toes are crossed, I was expecting them to cancel the order!

If you played the heck out of these games on a real NES, you're going to notice some input lag. There's no escaping it; that just how HDTVs operate compared to the CRT televisions of yesteryear. The wired controller certainly helps though.

I can confirm this too :(

If you haven't yet, check out the section on the original Legend of Zelda. There's a subsection that reads "Below is a map of the entire overworld..." and there's nothing under it except the introduction to the next subsection. They forgot to put in the fucking map. Everything else in the book is equally worthless. No codes, no interesting stories or interviews... it's like someone copy/pasted the most superficial previews from old copies of Nintendo Power and called it a day.

Respectfully, I think given the success of NES mini, even if they didn't originally plan to make an SNES version they will now.

Oh for fuck's sake. My order went through at least a minute before the console sold out on the site, so they'd better not screw me over.

My order said it would be delivered on Friday the 18th the moment I placed it, and that's still what it says, so I just hope I was simply near the back of the pack they had available.

This is what mine's doing. And it's infuriating.

I know it was already mentioned previously in this thread but I'll bring up Pat Contri's 'Ultimate Nintendo Guide to the NES Library'. It's utterly massive and covers every single NES title right down the the unlicensed crap. It's a fantastic read. At least, from the parts I have read from it, anyway. It would take a long time to actually read through the whole thing.

Yeah, I noticed this too. I pre-ordered the softcover version and was excited to get it. Of course the first game I really dug into was Zelda 1 - and was like "where's the overworld map?" - seems like a big oversight not to have it.

I also found some of the other game maps in here to be borderline unusable because they're so small on the page. Could've been better, but was obviously done as a rush job.

Hmm.

Do any of the buttons on a Super Famicom Wii controller execute a reset?

So I'm very happy to report that I can power my nes classic through the usb port of the ps4pro. Helps me extend it just far enough to play with those tiny controllers on the edge of my bed. Plus it brings the big what if question if nintendo and sony made the nintendo playstation. Haha

I do agree there is some input lag to the system unfortunately but doesn't stop me from enjoying some of the classics and they look great on the big screen.

Yeah. Honestly I've had more fun using the controller on the Wii VC and playing games on my CRT.

Anyone know of a cheapish small USB powered 720p monitor? I was thinking about trying to make this thing semi portable with a battery pack

Nothing is quite like the zero lag of a crt, but honestly it'll drive you crazy dwelling on that. Sounds like these minis are pretty good. I can live with that.

I just got my NES Classic and have a question. Can you change the screen options without the game you're in resetting?

What screen option are you all using?

Any other suggestions on what I can use to power my Famicom Mini?

The following have not worked:

1. TV USB port
2. USB port on front of receiver
3. Dell USB power adapter originally for a Windows tablet
4. Apple USB power adapter (small cube)
5. Sony portable power brick originally for Vita

I started to think it was possibly faulty but a USB port on the side of my computer monitor actually powered it on.
I also have an Anker portable charger that I haven't tried yet.

Well I figured out the issue. It wasn't USB at all.
It was HDMI.

For some reason the front HDMI port doesn't seem to work with the Famicom mini.
I tried one of the free back ports and it worked fine.

It's odd because I use other devices on the front HDMI port with no issues. I even tried switching cables.
